If the market thought that BWIN company was going to get killed by this rulling (which should more directly impact it than GIGM as its an Austrian company operating in Germany) it sure diddnt show that since the October ban news, that company was UP:

In your new plan for 2008 you mentioned not selling so quickly for just one news item David, this might be a case where investigating a day or two more might make sense?

Well, if you put SELL in the newsletter I will sell, just seemed there might be more than meets the eye here and its awhile before the whole EU could adopt this stance in 2008 even if the appeals in Germany didnt work, so its got less momentum to impact stock price immediately compared to say a pre announcement of low earnings etc.  which would cause a ripple the same day.

David,

you should hope you're right, not wrong! It's the series of "right" decisions that ultimately brings success. I look at this this way: you got 8% of capital available for another investment. If you find a company that will grow 100% in a year, it will definitely be better than GIGM's price potential, in my view. It's just we grew attached to this puppy and it is hard to let go of winners... althought it shouldn't be the case. A squeezed lemon is no longer a "good" lemon.  ;)

Agreed Berloga, its nice to know there is now an extra space to be occupied, Im sure David already has a few candidates in mind lol.

Once David made the sell official, I didnt blink an eye this time but sold too.  Of course, seeing that the price hadnt dropped on such a bad down day in the general market also helped my decision, I felt like it was a good time to sell before the weight of the market caught up to GIGM (which it didnt actually, at least not today since Motley came out with an article to bolster it).

In the old days where we were trying to trade more often I think I might have held GIGM past David's sell recommendation and there were times when I did so with other stocks.  In fact I see some ascending trendline support for GIGM here.

But now with the long term approach, I figure if he says to sell he has even better reasons than just technicals!

All that aside, best of luck to all still holding!   ;D

German Interstate Treaty: EGBA logdes complaint with European Commission
The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) calls on the European Commission to take swift action against the German Interstate Treaty on gaming. The Treaty, which came into force on January 1st and introduces a ban for online gaming and betting (except for horse races) in Germany, is in direct contravention of European Union law. The provisions of the Treaty severely restrict the rights of EGBA's members to provide services under Article 49 of the Treaty of Rome.

The German Interstate Treaty has come into force despite formal objections raised by the European Commission under its notification procedure (Directive 98/34/EC) that the Treaty transgressed EU law. Its adoption shall not only restrict the activities of EU operators but directly challenges the Commission's clear position under the notification procedure itself.
Norbert Teufelberger, Chairman of the EGBA, commented: "Prohibition is not and has never been a solution, be it in our sector or other sectors. It is not a responsible approach and cannot be a substitute to an efficient gaming policy. Focusing on online gaming does not make sense when most recent peer reviewed studies show that although online and offline gaming has a different target audience, players' behaviour is similar whether online or offline! Furthermore, in a regulated environment online gaming allows for higher transparency and traceability!".

Sigrid Ligné, Secretary General of the EGBA added: "The German Interstate Treaty is incompatible with EU law, and its adoption has left us with no other choice but to make a formal complaint to the EC. We urge the Commission now to fast track our complaint and launch infringement proceedings against Germany".  ENDS -

awesome news:
GigaMedia Signs Top EA MMORPG Warhammer(R) Online: Age of Reckoning(TM)
Thursday , January 31, 2008 06:20ET

HONG KONG, Jan. 31 /Xinhua-PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- GigaMedia (Nasdaq: GIGM) announced today it has secured an exclusive license from Electronic Arts to offer and operate the highly anticipated game Warhammer(R) Online: Age of Reckoning(TM) in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.

Warhammer Online is a ground-breaking new massively multiplayer online role-playing game ("MMORPG") set in a fantasy world of war and constant combat. Based on Games Workshop's 25-year tabletop fantasy war game series Warhammer, Warhammer Online creates a rich and immersive virtual world for hundreds of thousands of players to experience the epic nature of war and the glory of battle.

Created by the acclaimed studio EA Mythic, developers of the hit title Dark Age of Camelot(TM), Warhammer Online is one of the most highly anticipated games of 2008 according to numerous industry publications. Over 500,000 gamers have registered for its closed beta test, one of the most successful closed betas for any MMORPG ever.

"We are very excited to work with EA to bring such a blockbuster title to Asia," stated GigaMedia President Thomas Hui. "We expect Warhammer Online's Realm vs Realm(TM) combat and Public Quests(TM) to be enormously popular with hard-core gamers."

"We are thrilled to bring Warhammer Online to Asia and further strengthen our collaboration with GigaMedia as a strategic partner -- bringing the hottest digital entertainment to millions," stated EA Asia President Jon Niermann. "We are confident that, together with GigaMedia, Warhammer Online will be a tremendous success."

Warhammer Online thrusts players into a grim world of perpetual conflict to fight for the Realms of Order (Dwarfs, High Elves, and Empire) or Destruction (Greenskins, Dark Elves, and Chaos). Next-generation Realm vs. Realm game play ensures that players are never fighting alone. With an army of allies at their back, players will defend their homeland, invade enemy realms, and ultimately lead the siege of their enemy's capital city. Every aspect of the game -- every player, every quest, every encounter, and every battle -- can turn the tide of the ongoing war and mean victory for a player's realm!

In Warhammer Online, for the first time ever, players can engage in Public Quests -- multi-stage, communal quests to be completed by allied players fighting together against overwhelming odds. They can also embark on an epic quest to complete the Tome of Knowledge and unlock Warhammer lore, detailed monster information, new abilities, rewards, and major story plotlines. Drawing from a quarter century of highly detailed source material, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning will bring Games Workshop's fantasy world to life in a way that will allow players to create characters destined for great deeds on the field of battle.

David,
Ive mentioned a few times be4 that GIGM is one of my favourites. The management team (Wang / Hui) is brilliant & i can expect the stock to do very well over the next 2-3 yrs.

I did scale back my holdings to make room for ETFC & PALM..but i still continue to follow this stock closely.

Long since 6.83 & loving it :)

GIGM time again soon?  The fundamentals have kept up, earnings coming may 13.

The stock is cheap now and appears to be growing pretty quickly.  I think a move above the 50, 100, and 200 mas which are all bunched up is quite possible.  The stock price hasn't kept up with the improvement in the company's fundamentals.
