Network Appliance Shares Rise on Outlook
Thursday August 16, 10:08 am ET
Network Appliance Posts Lower 1st-Quarter Profit but Lifts Outlook, Sending Shares Higher

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (AP) -- Shares of Network Appliance Inc. jumped Thursday after the network storage system provider posted a revenue outlook above Wall Street's expectations, raising investor confidence in a coming rebound.

On Wednesday after the closing bell, NetApp posted a profit of $34.3 million, or 9 cents per share, for the quarter ended July 27, down 37 percent from $54.7 million, or 14 cents per share, in the year-ago period.

Adjusted earnings totaled $76 million, or 20 cents per share, in the latest period.

Revenue rose 11 percent to $689.2 million from $621.3 million.

Analysts, on average, were expecting a profit of 19 cents per share on an adjusted basis, according to a poll by Thomson Financial.

The company was disappointed with the quarter's revenue growth, but "confident about our underlying business strength and continued health," said Dan Warmenhoven, chief executive, in a statement.

For the second quarter, NetApp forecast a profit of 16 cents to 18 cents per share, or adjusted earnings between 24 cents and 26 cents per share, on sales of $752 million to $768 million.

Analysts are expecting earnings of 24 cents per share on sales of $743.2 million.

"Our bookings growth and cash flow are both very encouraging, and we are optimistic about getting back on track for higher growth in revenue and profits going forward," he added.

JPMorgan analyst Bill Shope said the path to recovery is clearer for NetApp.

"While it may take time for the clouds to lift from the story, the company has navigated through the seasonally toughest quarter of its fiscal year, and we believe the shares are poised for a sharp recovery as we progress through the calendar year," he wrote in a note to clients.

The company also approved a $1 billion stock buyback program, which Shope said should build investor confidence.

The report and buyback prompted analysts from Caris & Co. and A.G. Edwards to upgrade their ratings on the stock to "Buy."

Shares rose $1.83, or 7.6 percent, to $25.99 in morning trading even as the broader market declined on mortgage and credit worries. In the past 52 weeks, the stock has lost more than 25 percent of its value.

Caris & Company reiterates Above Average. Target $28 to $37. Caris raises their target on NTAP to $37 from $28 to reflect positive recent checks in the US federal sector and in Europe. Although US indirect checks remain weak, firm suspect that there is an indirect-to-direct mix shift which is taking place here. Recent developments (strong storage sales at EMC Corp. (EMC), Emulex (ELX) and QLogic (QLGC) guiding well for CQ4, ELX's ESP segment rebounding) increase their conviction level, while the recent share buyback activity is an added kicker.

Reuters
Network Appliance profit tops Wall St, shares leap
Wednesday November 14, 4:55 pm ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Network Appliance Inc (NasdaqGS:NTAP - News) posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit and outlook on Wednesday despite worries about slow U.S. enterprise spending, sending its shares up 11 percent.

The data storage equipment maker said revenue growth was driven by strength in the U.S. federal sector and Europe and Asia, offsetting sluggish North American corporate spending.

"We ... felt the slowdown early, in fiscal Q1, but we actually saw a pretty good rebound around the world except for large accounts in North America, which are dominated by large financial services companies," Chief Executive Dan Warmenhoven told Reuters. "The global economy is very strong ... the weakness is concentrated in the financial services sector."

Net income was $83.8 million, or 23 cents per share, compared with $86.9 million, or 22 cents per share, in last year's third quarter. Last year's earnings per share was based on a higher number of shares outstanding.

Excluding amortization of intangibles, stock-based compensation, acquisition-related costs and other items, NetApp's quarterly profit rose to $116.4 million, or 32 cents per share, from $108.9 million, or 28 cents per share, in the year-ago period.

Revenue rose 21 percent to $792.2 million in the quarter.

Analysts, on average, expected adjusted earnings of 26 cents per share and revenue of $760.3 million, according to Reuters Estimates.

Shares of NetApp rose 10.8 percent to $29.49 in after-hours trade, after closing on Wednesday at $26.61 on Nasdaq.

15% Growth Year-over-year And Large R And D
Spending Make NetApp (NTAP) A Dream Stock
In The Data Sector For Director Of Brigantine Advisors

On Wednesday March 31, 2010, 10:34 am EDT
67 WALL STREET, New York - March 31, 2010 - The Wall Street Transcript has just published its Data Hosting & Data Storage Report offering a timely review of the sector to serious investors and industry executives. This 32 page feature contains expert industry commentary through in-depth interviews with public company CEOs, Equity Analysts and Money Managers. The full issue is available by calling (212) 952-7433 or via The Wall Street Transcript Online.

Topics covered: Cloud Computing - Managed Hosting - Colocation Data Storage - Trend To Outsource Data To Reduce Costs - Equinix Acquisition of Switch & Data - M&A Activity Forecast - Increased Demand For Data Storage - Next-Generation Technologies - Improved Virtual Security

Companies include: Amazon.com (AMZN); Neutral Tandem (TNDM); 3PAR (PAR); Akamai (AKAM); Cbeyond (CBEY); Compellent (CML); DuPont Fabros Technology, Inc. (DFT); EMC (EMC); Equinix (EQIX); Hewlett-Packard (HPQ); Imation (IMN); Internap (INAP); Iowa Telecom (IWA); Knology (KNOL); Limelight (LLNW); NetApp (NTAP); NetScout (NTCT); and many more.

In the following brief excerpt from the 32 page report, Mark Kelleher discusses the outlook for the Data Storage sector and for investors.

Mark Kelleher is a Managing Director and Senior Analyst at Brigantine Advisors. He spent 15 years on Wall Street as a sell-side analyst before joining Brigantine Advisors, where he focuses on enterprise infrastructure. His past experience includes Senior Analyst roles at such firms as Tucker Anthony, First Albany and Canaccord Adams. In 1999 Mr. Kelleher was one of the first analysts to alert investors to the coming revolution in storage that included SANs and NAS architectures. Mr. Kelleher spent seven years as a Hardware Engineer, designing ASICs for Digital Equipment Corporation. He has an MBA from Boston University, and a B.S. in computer and systems engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

TWST: So with customers outsourcing more, in some ways the economic slowdown has been good for these companies. What does economic improvement bring for them?

Mr. Kelleher: I think the model has now been tested. You had this downturn and people kind of reached out for this model and explored it, and I think people are getting comfortable with it. I know the government is. The government now has these very secure buildings, and there's a big push with the administration to put everything out in the cloud. You now have these examples out there of things that work. I think that has happened in the commercial side as well. You have companies like Rackspace. Rackspace doesn't do colocation, but they do do cloud computing, and people who are using that are happy with that.

At the low end of the market, Amazon.com (AMZN) has their cloud computing facility. As you get more examples out there, as the recession kind of pushed people over the chasm - you talk about jumping the chasm, but I think the recession pushed people over that chasm - now they are over it and now you're in the widespread adoption phase. If you look at Terremark, for example, they have a March fiscal year ending March 2010. And for the full year, they should be up about 17% year-over-year. That's not bad, considering the past year that we've had.

TWST: As you mentioned, cloud computing is a hot topic for the industry. What's the broader impact of this for the industry? Do you consider any particular companies to be better positioned to capitalize on the opportunities cloud computing represents?

Mr. Kelleher: There are a number of different places that are interesting to look at. One is just the simple facilities of who is providing it. I keep coming back to Terremark because I'm very impressed with their facilities and a company like Terremark is well positioned to pick up that business. Equinix doesn't do managed services, it doesn't really do the higher-level cloud computing capabilities, but Equinix has made itself the on-ramp for the Internet, with all of the connectivity that they have within their facilities. So they are all well positioned. On the product side, it's companies that are designing platforms that are specifically aimed at a virtual environment.

VMware is well positioned on the server side, and companies like NetApp (NTAP) are extremely well positioned on the storage side. And you're starting to see them increasingly show up within data centers as the platform of choice for cloud computing. You can go in other directions, too. NetScout (NTCT), for example, is a company that does network diagnostic software and hardware to figure out what's going on across the wires. If you have a virtual environment, you have a lot more bandwidth going across between different points, and it becomes more important to know which virtual machine is affecting which virtual machine and really figuring out what's causing delays on the network. That's where something like NetScout can come in. There are different elements at play within the whole architecture.

TWST: Are there any other new technologies coming down the pipe that would impact these companies in terms of significant capital investments or competitive standing?

Mr. Kelleher: On the colocation and service providers side, it's primarily the investment in the facilities that requires the top capacity. On the other side, the R And D that has to be spent to get to a cloud computing level has been invested and now you're either there or you're not. I think companies like 3PAR and Compellent (CML) are there, but companies like Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) are behind. Hewlett-Packard, with their EVA product line in storage, is falling behind, in my opinion, in the virtual storage world, and they are beginning to lose market share. They put out their numbers last week and one of the only weak spots in their entire report was their storage group. Well, their loss is NetApp's gain. NetApp is growing 15% year-over-year.

That is faster than the storage market is growing, so they're taking market share and benefiting from the fact that they've already spent a good amount on R And D to get their products to the next level. So if the economy picks up - as a lot of people, including myself, believe that we are out of the woods - the IT world is anticipating, or I think has put off, upgrades to their technology for some time, and now you're in the mode where you're going to hit a refresh cycle. And when that refresh cycle hits, those dollars are going to go towards the most advanced virtual infrastructures that are out there. I think that's where some of these companies like NetApp are positioned strongly.
