BRIEF: Bovie Medical milestone: listing in Russell indexes
Thursday , June 25, 2009 03:39ET

Jun 25, 2009 (Newsday - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Starting tomorrow, Bovie Medical Corp., a Melville company that makes electro-surgical products, will become part of the Russell 2000, 3000 and Global indexes.

Bovie will now form part of a much broader stock index, which tracks up to 3,000 stocks.

By contrast, the Dow Jones industrial average tracks the stock of 30 of the country's largest companies.

A company's market capitalization is a criterion that Russell Investments uses in compiling the index, which traders use, along with other stock market indexes, to track companies.

Bovie has a market cap of about $140 million, compared with $100 million a year ago, said John Aneralla, president of Buttonwood Advisory Group, a North Carolina company that handles investor relations for Bovie.

"We think it's a great milestone in the company's history to be included in the Russell," Aneralla said. "It shows that we have continued to progress as other companies have declined over the last couple of years."

The company's first-quarter net income more than doubled to about $403,000 from $190,000 the year before.

Bovie Medical Announced It Received FDA Approval To Market J-Plasma ICON GS (BVX)

Tuesday , August 11, 2009 10:28ET

Aug 11, 2009 (SmarTrend(R) News Watch via COMTEX) -- 8/11/2009 - Bovie Medical Corp. (AMEX:BVX) announced Tuesday that the company received clearance from the FDA to market its J-Plasma ICON GS electrosurgical generator and handpiece. The technology provides a surgeon greater precision, minimal invasiveness, and an absence of conductive currents during surgery, controlled in a wide range of temperatures and intensities. It does this by utilizing a gas ionization process that produces a stable thin focused beam of ionized helium gas. Independent control of the beam power (heating) and helium flow rate (cooling) produces a highly localized effect. The company believes that the J-Plasma technology has a wide variety of medical applications including areas like dermatology, gynecology, hepatobiliary, thoracic, and general surgery. Revenues from the surgical procedures are estimated to exceed $2 billion. President Andrew Makrides said, "Management remains very encouraged regarding the potential of the J-Plasma technology. The FDA clearance to market J-Plasma is a milestone in our continued evolution into a high-tech medical device company."
