Alliance One swings to quarterly profit

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Alliance One International Inc. (AOI : alliance one intl inc com

5.55, +0.44, +8.6%) after Thursday's closing bell swung to second-quarter net profit of $10.9 million, or 12 cents a share, as expenses and the costs of goods and services sold dropped. In the same period last year, the Morrisville, N.C.-based tobacco company posted a net loss of $20.5 million, or 24 cents a share. Excluding discontinued operations, among other items, earnings were 35 cents a share vs. 4 cents a share last year. Revenue fell 3.2% to $593.6 million from $613.2 million. The company now sees now expects per-share earnings of 25 cents to 32 cents for the fiscal year ending March 31.
