Jazz Pharma rockets ahead of data release...
BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Jazz Pharmaceuticals rocketed over 209% on Wednesday ahead of the scheduled release of Phase III clinical data for its fibromyalgia treatment candidate sodium oxybate, or JZP-6. Jazz plans to present various data on June 10, 11 and 12 at two scientific meetings. Jazz added it hopes to file for U.S. approval of the product by the end of 2009. Shares of the biotech group were up 163% at $2.68 in midday trading. Sodium oxybate is already approved in the U.S. for the treatment of various sleep disorders.

Busted through the 200-day MA on a  Runaway Gap Up.
Runaway gaps are also called measuring gaps, and are best described as gaps that are caused by increased interest in the stock. For runaway gaps to the upside, it usually represents traders who did not get in during the initial move of the up trend and while waiting for a retracement in price, decided it was not going to happen. Increased buying interest happens all of a sudden, and the price gaps above the previous day's close. This type of runaway gap represents an almost panic state in traders. Also, a good uptrend can have runaway gaps caused by significant news events that cause new interest in the stock. In the chart below, note the significant increase in volume during and after the runaway gap.

Runaway gaps can also happen in downtrends. This usually represents increased liquidation of that stock by traders and buyers who are standing on the sidelines. These can become very serious as those who are holding onto the stock will eventually panic and sell – but sell to whom? The price has to continue to drop and gap down to find buyers. Not a good situation.

The term measuring gap is also used for runaway gaps. This is an interpretation that is hard to find examples for, but it is a way of helping one decide how much longer a trend will last. The theory is that the measuring gap will occur in the middle, or half way, through the move.

Sometimes, the futures market will have runaway gaps that are caused by trading limits imposed by the exchanges. Getting caught on the wrong side of the trend when you have these limit moves in futures can be horrifying. The good news is that you can also be on the right side of them. These are not common occurrences in the futures market despite all the wrong information being touted by those who do not understand it, and are only repeating something they read from an uninformed reporter.

Jazz Pharma rockets on 3Q results, higher outlook
Jazz Pharma stock ends strong week by setting 9-year high after posting 3rd quarter results

On Friday November 5, 2010, 1:34 pm EDT
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Jazz Pharmaceuticals Inc. rose to a nine-year high Friday, capping a weeklong rally after the company reported strong third-quarter results and raised its annual forecasts.

Jazz said its sales improved after it raised the price of its narcolepsy drug Xyrem, which is expected to boost its sales for the rest of the year. Its shares advanced to their highest prices since early 2001.

The Palo Alto, Calif., company reported a profit of $13.2 million, or 32 cents per share, in the third quarter. A year ago the company lost $1.7 million, or 5 cents per share, during the same period. Excluding one-time costs Jazz said its profit totaled 41 cents per share. Revenue rose 45 percent, to $44.8 million from $30.8 million.

Analysts expected a profit of 34 cents per share and revenue of $42.6 million on average, according to Thomson Reuters. Analyst estimates usually leave out one-time items. Shares of Jazz rose $1.75, or 14.1 percent, to $14.15 in afternoon trading.

Jazz markets Xyrem for daytime sleepiness in patients who have narcolepsy, and also for cataplexy, a condition associated with narcolepsy that causes sudden and brief losses of muscle control. Its other approved drug, Luvox CR, is a treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder and social anxiety disorder. The company said Xyrem revenue grew 49 percent to $37.2 million, mostly because of the increased price. Luvox sales rose to $6.6 million from $5 million. Jazz also reported $915,000 in revenue from royalties and contracts.

The company raised its profit and revenue forecasts because it expects more revenue from Xyrem, along with slightly lower research and development costs. Jazz is now forecasting a profit of $1.45 to $1.50 per share excluding one-time costs, up from $1.05 to $1.15 per share. It now expects sales of $164 million to $168 million in sales this year, compared with an earlier estimate of $156 million to $162 million.

Analysts were expecting a profit of $1.15 per share and $161.7 million in revenue.

Jazz is now projecting $140 million to $142 million from Xyrem rather than $132 million to $136 million. It still expects $24 million to $26 million in Luvox revenue.

Shares of Jazz Pharmaceuticals slumped in August after a Food and Drug Administration panel recommended against granting a new approval to Xyrem. Jazz wants to market the drug as a treatment for fibromyalgia, but the panel -- and later, the FDA itself -- said the drug's abuse risks were too great. The stock fell 22 percent the day after the panel made its recommendation.

Over the last four days, however, Jazz shares are up 16.7 percent. On Friday the stock set a high of $14.28.

Jazz Pharma rally continues...  8)

Jazz Pharmaceuticals Inc. stock is up more than 30 percent this week, posting another double-digit gain on Friday after a strong earnings report the day before.

Palo Alto-based Jazz (NASDAQ:JAZZ) on Thursday reported third-quarter net income of $13.2 million, or 32 cents a share, compared to a loss in the same period last year of $1.7 million, or 5 cents a share.

Total revenue was $44.8 million, up 45 percent compared to the year-ago quarter.

The company also boosted its 2010 sales forecast to between $164 million and $168 million. It said earnings per share should be between 70 cents and 75 cents, with adjusted earnings between $1.45 and $1.50.

The boost is attributed to increased sales of the drug Xyrem, whose net sales in Q3 were $37.2 million, compared to $25 million for the third quarter of 2009.

Once-daily Luvox CR sales were also up 33 percent, bringing in $6.6 million in revenue.

Jazz Pharmaceuticals continues to rebound from it's failure to get its Xyrem approved in fibromyalgia based on better financial outlook based in part on price increases for the drug. HeartWare rose on an analysis presented at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association that showed its device for helping the hearts of transplant patients pump may outperform that of rival Thoratec, which was one of the biggest decliners.
