Update:
What a difficult situation.............Based on this thought process I am not comfortable entering at the prices that are appearing in pre market.  I prefer to wait and look for pullback / consolidation following todays reaction to the news.
This may be a bad decision as the market may run up and away past $25 today, we shall see.

This is what the current market is doing to us, if the market weren't so horrible I would have played the entry as a potential breakaway gap up, which indeed it looks like it may turn into. Fantastic day for SQNM, I am hopeful we can perhaps enter in the next consolidation phase, the market can still get involved here and pour cold water on any good move.

The chart I think is self explanatory.

Hey Oliver,

No, not yet, but I am definately watching and interested in the $21 zone.

I am starting to think we 'may' be reaching some sort of tradeable bottom in the market (still with short term outcomes though). Fear is SO high (look at the VIX chart) that perhaps an upward fast and quick bounce is around the corner.

Safer prenatal Down's syndrome test found in U.S.
Mon Oct 6, 2008 5:00pm EDT

By Will Dunham

WASHINGTON, Oct 6 (Reuters) - A prenatal blood test can be used to determine if an unborn baby has Down's syndrome without the small risk to the fetus posed by invasive testing methods such as amniocentesis, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

Researchers led by Stephen Quake of Stanford University in California created a way to look for the extra chromosomes that cause Down's and similar birth detects in the tiny amounts of fetal DNA that circulate in the mother's blood.

The test, which requires a small blood sample from the mother, is safer than amniocentesis, in which a needle is stuck into the uterus, and can be done earlier in a pregnancy.

Down's syndrome, which causes mental retardation and other problems, is caused when a child has three copies instead of the normal two of chromosome 21.

The test also detects other chromosomal conditions such as Edward syndrome, which kills half of babies in the first week of life and Patau syndrome, which kills more than 80 percent of children in infancy.

Quake's team demonstrated the accuracy of the new genetic test in a small study involving 18 women.

It accurately identified the nine women with a Down's syndrome pregnancy and three others with fetuses with different chromosomal disorders, the researchers wrote in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"It's the first universal, noninvasive test for Down syndrome. So this should be the first step in putting an end to invasive testing procedures like amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling," Quake said in a telephone interview.

Blood tests for pregnant women like the alpha-fetoprotein test can find potential signs of a chromosomal disorder such as Down's, but cannot diagnose it with certainty.

Quake said such tests serve as only "indirect and weak predictors of what's going on."

For a definitive determination, women must have an invasive diagnostic procedure such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling. This is done typically after the 15th week of pregnancy.

These procedures carry a small risk -- roughly 1 percent -- of causing a miscarriage or birth defects.

Because of that, their routine use has been mostly by women age 35 and older at higher risk for having Down's syndrome babies. Scientists have been working for years to devise safer, noninvasive tests suitable for any pregnant woman.

Quake said the new test also could be administered much earlier in a pregnancy than amniocentesis or CVS -- potentially as early as five weeks after conception. And the results are back within a couple of days, instead of two to three weeks. Some women terminate the pregnancy when they learn the fetus has Down's syndrome but others, including Republican U.S. vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, do not.

Quake said the new test could be widely available in two or three years, and could become a routine prenatal test of a baby's health. Quake said the next step is a larger study involving hundreds of women. Stanford University has filed a patent on the test and two companies are negotiating for the licensing rights, Quake said. He said he is has been hired as a consultant for both companies, which he declined to identify.

San Diego-based Sequenom Inc (SQNM.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) is also working on a Down's syndrome blood test using a different approach. (

25-Nov-08 Rodman & Renshaw believes SQNM may soon have new additions to their non-invasive prenatal diagnostic empire. They say initial proof of concept for a test of monogenetic diseases (diseases caused by one gene) such as cystic fibrosis, beta-thalassemia, and others was published yesterday in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They note that on September 15, SQNM acquired exclusive world-wide rights to digital PCR and other non-invasive diagnostic intellectual property from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Firm anticipates SQNM to begin clinical testing for certain monogenetic diseases by the end of next year, once procedures have been optimized. For cystic fibrosis alone, they believe the market potential for such a test could approach $1 bln. Potential revenue from such tests have not been factored into their financial projections and will begin to be incorporated as the development path becomes more clear.

17-Nov-08 Lazard says they continue to believe that SQNM's platform for non-invasive prenatal diagnostics will change medicine and that the co is making ample progress beyond Down syndrome. ... With the 800+ sample catalyst scheduled for Jan. 28, firm suspects many investors are currently on the sidelines planning to buy beforehand. With 21% and 35% runs on the day of prior data presentations, they expect the stock to creep up in advance of the data, and encourage buyers to get in now.

Very Promising Developments With Widespread Use in Diagnostics.
If we can immediately grasp the relevance of the recent
reports from Sequenom. What I have determined is that SQNM appears to
be developing products that will transform the future of diagnostics.
They have convinced me that they have developed a screen for Down
Syndrome that is far better than current methods. It is less
invasive, and at least as effective. It has good sensitivity and
specificity. Futhermore, their recent report regarding assessing the
methylation status of DNA is very impressive. Methylation of DNA is
our cells' way of regulating how readily it is expressed. In other
words, methylation of DNA is related to many diseases, probably
several of which have not yet been identified. Hypomethylation of DNA
is the mechanism of action of some currently used chemotherapy, and
SQNM's ability to test methylation status is promising for determining
the efficacy of anticancer drugs targeted at such epigenetic
properties (i.e., methylation or acetylation). SQNM's minor flaw in
their efficacy report means very little to me, and I am actually quite
impressed that they would highlight the error before anyone else.
This means a lot for integrity. To summarize, I am confident that
Sequenom will be a dominant force in the area of molecular diagnostics
in the near future.

UPDATE 2-Sequenom delays Down Syndrome test; shares plunge
Wed Apr 29, 2009 6:42pm EDT

* Says delays launch of Down Syndrome test
* Cites employee mishandling

* Shares plunge 70 percent after the bell (Adds conference calls details, updates share movement)

April 29 (Reuters) - Sequenom Inc (SQNM.O) said employee mishandling of research and development test data and results has forced it to delay the launch of a Down Syndrome test, sending its shares plunging 70 percent.

The maker of genetic analysis products said it is no longer relying on previously announced research and development test data and results related to its SEQureDx technology.

Sequenom's SEQureDx tests the DNA of a foetus from a mother's blood in a non-invasive manner to see if the blood groups of the mother and the child are compatible.

The company said its board has formed a special committee of independent directors to oversee an independent investigation of the employees' activity related to the test data and results.

However, Sequenom also said its SEQureDx technology remained scientifically and technically sound. It said the company has not changed its plans to develop in parallel its RNA- and DNA-based methods for the Down Syndrome test and will endeavor to have a validated test in the fourth quarter of 2009.

"We are not back at square one. We have a lot of information and see virtue in both assay technologies," Sequenom's Chief Executive Harry Stylli said on a conference call.

Separately, the San Diego-based company forecast 2009 revenue in the range of $32 million and $35 million, compared with the Wall Street consensus of $55.2 million.

In heavy trading after the bell, Sequenom shares fell to $4.50. They closed at $14.91 Wednesday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Shailesh Kuber in Bangalore; Editing by Anthony Kurian and Deepak Kannan)

Sequenom settles lawsuit for $14 million, stock

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Diagnostic test maker Sequenom Inc. said Friday it will pay $14 million plus stock to settle a class action securities lawsuit over the mishandling of study data on a potential test for Down syndrome.

The company said the $14 million will be funded through insurance proceeds. Also, the company agreed to issue a number of shares to the plaintiffs after the settlement gets court approval amounting to 9.95 percent of Sequenom's outstanding stock.

As of Dec. 23, the company had 61.7 million common shares outstanding

Sequenom admits no liability and said it is settling the lawsuit to avoid "potentially lengthy, costly, distracting and time-consuming litigation.'

On April 29, Sequenom said study data and results for the SEQureDx Down test could not be relied on due to "employee mishandling." SEQureDx appeared to be a promising test that was faster, cheaper, less invasive and less risky than other methods, like amniocentesis. Its results in preliminary studies were positive.

The announcement sent shares plunging, with the stock losing well over half its value.

In September, the company forced out four executives and three other employees, including its president and CEO and the executive in charge of research and development. The shake-up followed a company investigation into the mishandling of test results. Each employee denied any wrongdoing, and the company said it did not discover any deliberate wrongdoing.

Instead, Sequenom had said it did not put adequate protocols and controls in place. Some employees were not adequately supervised.

It moved to create new disclosure protocols and procedures and give employees more training in ethics and scientific procedures, and make new rules for the conduct of research and development and clinical studies.

The suit was pending in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

Shares of Sequenom rose 21 cents, or 5.1 percent, to $4.36 in morning trading. The stock has traded between $2.55 and $25.99 over the last 52 weeks.

UPDATE 2-Sequenom in $14 million settlement over test delay

* Lawsuit arose after test data mishandled

* Sequenom shares fell 75.7 pct after initial disclosure

* Sequenom to issue shares; insurance proceeds fund accord

* Shares of Sequenom rise 5 pct

NEW YORK, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Sequenom Inc (SQNM.O), a
diagnostics testing and genetic analysis company, said it would
pay $14 million to settle an investor class-action lawsuit
arising from mistakes in the development of a prenatal test for
Down Syndrome. The lawsuit followed a 75.7 percent plunge in Sequenom
shares last April 30, after the company said it would delay the
launch of the SEQureDx prenatal test, citing "mishandling" of
research and development test data by employees. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission later opened a
probe into the matter, and the San Diego-based company has said
it has held talks with federal prosecutors in California and
the FBI. Sequenom said insurance proceeds will fund the settlement.
It also plans to issue shares equal to 9.95 percent of the
number outstanding to the plaintiffs. The lead plaintiff is the Los Angeles City Employees'
Retirement System pension fund. Sequenom did not admit liability, but said the accord lets
it avoid the cost and distractions of litigation. It did not
immediately respond to a request for further comment. Shares of the company were up 21 cents, or 5.1 percent, at
$4.36 in morning trading on the Nasdaq. They closed at $14.91
last April 29, before problems with the test were revealed. "We view this as a clear positive for the stock," Barclays
Capital analyst C. Anthony Butler wrote. "This has been a major
overhang and an impediment to raising capital, which the
company needs to do this year." Down Syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that can result in
impaired cognitive ability and abnormal facial features. In September, following an independent investigation,
Sequenom said it had determined that test data "included
inadequately substantiated claims, inconsistencies and errors,"
some of which were reported publicly "due to the deficiencies
in our disclosure controls and procedures." At the time, the company did not say whether it believed
data was defective because of carelessness or because it was
fabricated. It fired Chief Executive Harry Stylli, senior research
official Elizabeth Dragon and three others, and the company's
chief financial officer resigned. Stylli and Dragon are among the defendants who agreed to
settle with the plaintiffs, a regulatory filing shows. The case is In re Sequenom Inc Securities Litigation, U.S.
District Court, Southern District of California, No. 09-00921.

Technically the current move of SQNM from 5 to 7.72 shows an accumulative share volume of 349 million shares traded.
Compare this to the DNDN move over a year ago this is a positive sign for the future price of SQNM.

DNDN started at 2.75 in March '09, it was 27 by Apr., 30 in Nov. and then based.
DNDN then moved from 30 to 57 between Jan. and Apr. of 2010 and showed the 351 million share vol. during this time.

If SQNM is showing similar share volume...we could see a move higher in share price in the near term, probably starting in Jan. of 2011.

DNDN has 144.33 mil. shares outstanding
SQNM has 76.33 mil. shares outstanding

The implication is not that SQNM will move just like DNDN did, only that volume is the gas in a stock tank that makes it move either higher or lower...thought is that a higher move is in the air.
