Power-One, Inc. Achieves Number Two Position in Global...

CAMARILLO, Calif., Aug 19, 2010 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- Power-One, Inc. a leading provider of renewable energy and energy-efficient power conversion and power management solutions, announced today that it has become the second largest manufacturer, worldwide, of power inverters for the renewable energy industry.

According to independent figures released this week by IMS Research ( www.pvmarketresearch.com ), Power-One now claims 11% market share of the global Photovoltaic (PV) market. In less than two years, Power-One has jumped from ninth place in 2008 to second at the end of the second quarter of 2010. In the first six months of 2010, Power-One has shipped over 800 MW of inverters.

"Based on the accelerated worldwide demand for our products, we are excited to have achieved this key milestone so quickly," said Alex Levran, President, Renewable Energy Solutions at Power-One. "We have been working hard to expand capacity to serve our customers' needs, while at the same time providing industry-leading inverters that generate high yields."

Two major factors helped Power-One achieve this new position. First, the company has witnessed accelerated sales of its products, based on technology leadership, higher ROI, ease-of-use and a strong distribution and post-sales network. Second, Power-One has increased production capacity by modifying its existing facilities and streamlining operations, meeting increased worldwide demand for its inverters.

Through a number of initiatives, Power-One has expanded the output of its renewable energy facility in Italy to supply current and forecast demand. Today Power-One has the capacity to annually produce more than 2.5 GW of inverters and will achieve a run-rate of over 4.0 GW by the end of 2010. Further, based on forecasts for continued demand of both its solar and wind products, the company has undertaken initiatives to expand production in both Asia and North America.

Power-One offers a wide array of inverters, ranging from 1.6 kW to 2.5 MW. The inverters are sold to the residential, commercial and utility-grade markets in both solar and wind. In addition, Power-One plans to launch a number of new products this year and in 2011, including a 700kW and 1.4 MW liquid-cooled solar inverter, as well as inverters specific to the North American and Chinese markets that meet content and geographic requirements.

PWER  Gov. Brewer, Mayor Gordon Celebrate Power-One's...  by GlobeNewswire  Jan 31 2011 11:00AM

PHOENIX, Jan 31, 2011 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- Today Power-One, Inc. (PWER), the world's second-largest manufacturer of power inverters for the renewable energy industry, opened its first North American manufacturing facility in Phoenix that will eventually employ 350 people. Power-One's Phoenix facility will produce its industry-leading photovoltaic (PV) and wind inverters that convert renewable energy into a usable form of electricity for distribution on the utility grid.

The facility will reach a capacity of 1 gigawatt of product by the end of the year with available site capacity reaching 4 gigawatts, which would generate enough electricity to power up to two million homes. The inverters manufactured at this facility will be installed in residential, commercial and utility settings.

Governor Jan Brewer, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Arizona Commerce Authority President and CEO Don Cardon, Power-One President and CEO Richard Thompson, Greater Phoenix Economic Council President and CEO Barry Broome and other dignitaries signed the front panel of the first central inverter, a 100 kilowatt unit, assembled at the Phoenix facility.

"Power-One is excited to open its manufacturing and research and development center in Arizona, as we bring more jobs to the United States and establish our North American renewable energy footprint," Thompson said. "We view the opportunity to open new markets in the U.S. and abroad, as well as to introduce new technologies, as key drivers to our future success."

Power-One has shown significant growth in terms of revenue and market share in 2010, leaping to the number two global position for PV inverter sales in 2010. According to IMS Research, the global PV inverter market is expected to grow at compound annual rates of nearly 25 percent. IMS also adds that seven million inverters are expected to be sold in 2014 compared to less than one million in 2009.

"I have been consistently focused on ensuring Arizona is a magnet for business relocation, capital investment and a catalyst for the creation of new business and new jobs -- and with the work of my Arizona Commerce Authority, we're seeing tremendous results in the solar space," said Gov. Brewer, who presided over the grand opening ceremony. "Arizona now ranks number one in the nation for solar industry and manufacturing and we are the best in the nation when it comes to competing globally for solar energy companies that are relocating and expanding. I welcome Power-One and look forward to its partnership in growing this industry in our state."

Power-One will advance Arizona's growing solar industry, Cardon said.

"Arizona is proud that Power-One will now support their global customers and our local market with their new manufacturing facility in Phoenix," Cardon said. "Power-One is among the world's largest providers of renewable energy and 'green' power solutions. As we look to the future, the Arizona Commerce Authority will continue to cultivate such investments in the renewable energy sector to ensure job retention, creation and training in this growing industry. We're committed to supporting this sector because we know Arizona can become the solar capitol of the world and lead the nation as solar demand continues to grow globally and intensify nationally."

Power-One's 122,000 square-foot Phoenix facility, located at 3201 E. Harbour Dr., began operating in October and already employs 40 people.

"We are proud to welcome Power-One to our great city, and continue welcoming partners who are committed to a greener, more prosperous Phoenix," said Mayor Gordon. "The grand opening of this facility is another example of how Phoenix's economic recovery is quickly gaining momentum to turn 2011 into the year for job creation."

Power-One is already expanding Greater Phoenix's renewable energy supply chain. FAIST, a multinational United Kingdom-based company and a Power-One supplier, announced in December it will establish its first U.S. presence in Phoenix with FAIST GreenTek LLC to manufacture steel and metal structures and employ 100 to 150 people. GPEC assisted FAIST GreenTek and Power-One's move to Phoenix.

"Power-One is a global leader providing high-quality jobs. We are very excited about this dynamic company coming into the market," Broome said. "Greater Phoenix's renewable energy industry is in a very strong position and we expect to see continued growth of the supply chain in the coming year."

Power-One decided to move to Phoenix because of the region's strong workforce, access to intellectual resources at Arizona State University, and strong support from Gov. Brewer, the Arizona Commerce Authority, the City of Phoenix and GPEC.

"The renewable energy industrial cluster in Arizona is substantially stronger and more diverse with the arrival of Power-One. We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with the Power-One team built on collaborative research and innovation in the years ahead," said Todd Hardy, ASU's associate vice president for economic affairs.

In recognition of the recent tragedy that occurred in Tucson, Power-One made a monetary donation to the Safeway Foundation that has been set up for the Tucson victims. The donation was made on behalf of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, the victims and their families.

American Superconductor Gives Investors a Jolt..

Concerns about American Superconductor's (Nasdaq: AMSC) reliance on a single large customer turned out to be a little overblown in the fiscal third quarter as the company shocked investors with great results.

Sinovel continued to buy product, and as 2011 moves along more wind customers will start ramping up production, reducing reliance on the third-largest wind turbine manufacturer.

Revenue jumped 42% to $114.2 million, and both gross margin and operating margin increased to 40.7% and 18.8%, respectively. In the future, management is expecting operating margins to be above 20% on an ongoing basis.

As wind installations pick back up in China and worldwide, the company should ride the wave higher. The beauty of American Superconductor's business model is that it operates under long-term contracts with multiple manufacturers. It doesn't care which firm you choose for your wind project, as long as it has American Superconductor products in it. But as the company grows, wind manufacturers will play a decreasing role in future growth.

Growth beyond wind
Going forward, American Superconductor expects D-VAR and SolarTie to become a larger percent of revenue as wind and solar projects adopt these products. Inverter companies like American Superconductor, Satcon (Nasdaq: SATC) and Power-One (Nasdaq: PWER) are seeing high growth in this area. As innovation makes inverters more customized for renewable energy, sales should be driven even higher.

There are also superconductors -- which, considering the company's name, ironically haven't contributed very much to sales thus far. That should change as Amperium wire sales pick up and the Tres Amigas project to connect three U.S. electrical grids moves forward.

Big dreams becoming bigger
On the conference call, management couldn't push its goal of $1 billion of sales and 20%-plus operating margins in 2015 hard enough. The company may even be able to cut a year off that plan if superconductors and grid products are able to drive growth. To help investors sleep better at night, management expects Sinovel to be closer to 50% of sales by then, a far cry from 80% in the past.

I don't see any reason to be anything but bullish on American Superconductor's future. Sales are growing, margins are up, and new innovative products are just starting to hit the market. The stock may be lagging, but with performance like this it won't be for long.

Power-One Making Quiet but Big Gains in Inverter Market...

Power-One (PWER) is the quiet runner-up in the global photovoltaic inverter market. The firm's bread and butter is the small commercial sector with installation sizes in the 10 kilowatt to 50 kilowatt range, although it looks to be moving to larger-scale sizes.

SMA is the elephant in the inverter market with a more than 40 percent market share. But it's a big and fast growing market and there's still room for competitors to maneuver -- as evidenced by Power-One's rapid rise from ninth place to second place in the market in just two years. GTM Research sizes the 2010 global PV inverter market as $5.3 billion and the 2011 market in the $5.6 billion to $6 billion range.

The firm has gone from just 200 megawatts of shipments to more than 1.6 gigawatts and an 11 percent market share in two years. This growth has come from a focus on the European and, more specifically, the Italian market, with an estimated 40 percent to 50 percent market share in Italy.

That leaves the firm overexposed to drastic shifts in the Italian subsidy and feed-in tariff structure, so Power-One seems to be making a strategic move towards the U.S. market with its expectations of rapid growth. The California-based firm is returning to the U.S. and opening up shop in a big way in Arizona.

I spoke with Dr. Alex Levran, president, Renewable Energy Solutions at Power-One. He added that the firm has also made strong gains in market share in Germany as well as in shipping worldwide to Korea, China and Taiwan. Power-One also has local manufacturing in Ontario to take advantage of that country's Feed-in Tariff.

Levran said that Power-One's "CEC efficiency levels are still the best in the industry."

One important topic we've focused on at Greentech Media is the integration of solar with the smart grid. Levran spoke of a law now on Germany's books that addresses "smart grid connectivity." With Germany obtaining an increasing amount of power from variable sources like solar -- the smart grid connectivity ruling insists that inverters and PV installs allow utility control of low-voltage ride-through as well as real and reactive power. All Power-One inverters will have this capability by April of this year according to Levran.

This morning, Power-One held a ribbon-cutting for a manufacturing facility in Phoenix, Arizona that will potentially create over 350 jobs. The grand opening was attended by the usual political suspects -- Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Arizona Commerce Authority and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council. Power-One's Phoenix facility will produce photovoltaic and wind inverters, with expectations of the manufacturing site reaching an annual inverter production capacity of 1.0 gigawatt by mid-2011.

The firm recently added Dick Swanson, the founder of SunPower (SPWRA), to its board of directors and also acquired the assets of solar monitoring startup, Fat Spaniel.

Mark W. Bachman of Auriga USA, an equity research firm, rates the stock as a "Buy," but has concerns over the effect of expansion plans on near-term product margins and longer-term opex. Bachman referred to Power-One as "one of the few U.S.-based renewable names left with real and growing cash flow." Power-One has a market cap of $1.1 billion.

With lower capex and energy cost, it would seem a bit easier to keep inverter manufacturing in the U.S. compared to PV panel production.
