Powerwave Technologies Introduces Ultra-Broadband LTE(R)...

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb 14, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS -- BOOTH 8B109 -- Powerwave Technologies Inc. (PWAV), a global leader in end-to-end advanced wireless solutions, today announced the new LTE ultra-broadband Powerwave Picocell, which delivers up to 15 times greater overall system capacity at a much lower cost and complexity than adding standard macro cells to address "sore spots" of high data usage or weak signals in wireless networks. The product is debuting today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

The new picocell is a key component of Powerwave's Inside Out Solutions topology and supports both LTE and Wi-Fi technologies. This powerful all-in-one compact base station enables wireless operators to inject broadband capacity closer to where their customers need it most. This gives each user a better signal and reduces network congestion, resulting in a faster experience and longer battery life. Additional benefits include less power consumption, faster zoning approvals and simpler installation.

Because LTE data speeds slow down with congestion and distance from the macro cell, the Powerwave Picocell delivers the fastest possible user experience for mobile devices, including video broadcast, mobile Internet, two-way video conferencing and HD video. In addition, enterprises and government agencies can build out a single infrastructure that enables users to take advantage of data-intensive applications using both LTE and Wi-Fi technologies in a single base station.

"Powerwave's new picocell offers an economical way to build out existing network infrastructure that not only immediately meets today's mobile user needs, but also provides for the future of 4G and beyond," said Khurram Sheikh, chief technical officer of Powerwave. "This product is a cornerstone of Powerwave's Inside Out Solutions, which dramatically boost data throughput at any time for LTE and Wi-Fi systems, both indoors and outdoors, providing an enhanced experience no matter where the user is located."

"Initial deployments of LTE networks have not been built from the inside out," said Peter Jarich, Current Analysis' service director for telecom infrastructure. "Yet, there can be no denying that as operators struggle to provide an impressive user experience, the use of small cells is critical to obtaining solid spectrum reuse and bandwidth per user. It's no surprise, then, that early market predictions for 2011 indicate that small cell architectures will become an integral part of 4G networks."

Key features of the Powerwave LTE Picocell eNodeB include:

Small, elegant form factor is minimally invasive on the environment and enables fast and smooth deployment in challenging locations, both inside and outside 3GPP Release 8 compliant Powerwave World Radio Transceiver supporting all 4G frequency bands from 700MHz to 2.7GHz Support for 100 simultaneous active users and 1000 registered users Increased aggregate data throughput of nearly 100 Mbps and user-plane latency of less than five milliseconds Integrated 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz 802.11Wi-Fi router All-in-one design including antennas, filters, RF, baseband and control 2x2 MIMO in an elegant, compact design Self Optimized Network (SON), Remote provisioning, optimization, monitoring and maintenance capabilities to reduce total cost of ownership Five times less UL transmit power for connected devices, which extends battery life and reduces cost for both wireless operators and end users

New MIMO Active Array Antenna From Powerwave Technologies...

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb 14, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS -- Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (PWAV), a global leader in end-to-end advanced wireless solutions, introduced today its new multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Active Array Antenna that increases mobile broadband coverage up to 100 percent and reduces power consumption by 40 percent, slashing total operational costs for network providers.

The Powerwave MIMO Active Array Antenna combines the company's industry-leading remote radio head and antenna technologies into a single integrated design with a 3dB - 5dB link budget that doubles a basestation's coverage radius when compared to non-integrated antennas. Similarly, the integrated design reduces power losses to make the antenna a much more cost-effective alternative. The compact design has the same height, width and front windloading as a conventional antenna, enabling like-for-like swapping of existing tower infrastructure. The MIMO Active Array Antenna is a leading part of Powerwave's Inside Out Solutions(TM) network strategy designed to provide ubiquitous mobile broadband coverage both inside buildings and outdoors in large venues.

"While 3G and 4G networks provide the increased data rates needed for today's mobile devices, they also lead to cell shrinkage that results in pockets of poor reception within the radius of the tower," said Khurram Sheikh, chief technical officer at Powerwave. "The increased coverage and high performance data speed at cell edge offered by Powerwave's MIMO Active Array Antenna provides the performance needed to solve the widening gap between mobile data traffic and bandwidth capacity, delivering significantly improved signal quality to customers."

The MIMO Active Array Antenna is a total solution integrated into a single radome containing all the subsystems necessary to deploy the complete 3G or 4G BTS RF up the tower. These include wideband world radio transceiver, power amplifier with advanced DPD and CFR algorithms, integrated filter and duplexer, low noise amplifier (LNA) and cross-polarized antenna with the greatest gain per unit length. This all-in-one design compared to typical solutions with separate components is quickly and easily deployed and reduces tower lease costs. In addition, with a total weight of less than 20 kg (45 lbs.) and requiring only power and fiber optic data connections, the Powerwave MIMO Active Array can be installed by one person.

Based on Powerwave's industry-proven software-defined world radio transceiver, the versatile MIMO Active Array Antenna can be used in 3G and/or 4G deployments, in frequency bands from 700 MHz to 2.7 GHz. Solutions deployed in 3G networks can be upgraded to 4G protocols at little or no cost, because no modifications to the tower-top active array antenna are necessary. The antenna supports a wide variety of protocols, including CDMA, WCDMA, HSPA+, WiMAX(TM) and LTE(R).

Availability

The MIMO Active Array Antenna is now in carrier trials and will be generally available in Q3 2011.

If You See This, Should You Sell Powerwave Technologies?
February 16, 2011 By Seth Jayson

There's no foolproof way to know the future for Powerwave Technologies (Nasdaq: PWAV) or any other company. However, certain clues may help you see potential stumbles before they happen -- and before your stock craters as a result. Rest assured: Even if you're not monitoring these metrics, short-sellers are.

A cloudy crystal ball
I often use accounts receivable (AR) and days sales outstanding (DSO) to judge a company's current health and future prospects. It's an important step in separating the pretenders from the market's best stocks. Alone, AR -- the amount of money owed the company -- and DSO -- days worth of sales owed to the company -- don't tell you much. However, by considering the trends in AR and DSO, you can sometimes get a window onto the future.

Sometimes, problems with AR or DSO simply indicate a change in the business (like an acquisition), or lax collections. However, AR that grows more quickly than revenue, or ballooning DSO, can also suggest a desperate company that's trying to boost sales by giving its customers overly generous payment terms. Alternately, it can indicate that the company sprinted to book a load of sales at the end of the quarter, like used-car dealers on the 29th of the month. (Sometimes, companies do both.)

Why might an upstanding firm like Powerwave Technologies do this? For the same reason any other company might: to make the numbers. Investors don't like revenue shortfalls, and employees don't like reporting them to their superiors.

Is Powerwave Technologies sending any potential warning signs? Take a look at the chart below, which plots revenue growth against AR growth, and DSO:

The standard way to calculate DSO uses average accounts receivable. I prefer to look at end-of-quarter (EOQ) receivables, but I've plotted both above.

Watching the trends
When that red line (AR growth) crosses above the green line (revenue growth), I know I need to consult the filings. Similarly, a spike in the blue bars (DSO) indicates a trend worth worrying about. As another reality check, it's reasonable to consider what a normal DSO figure might look like in this space.

Differences in business models can generate variations in DSO, so don't consider this the final word -- just a way to add some context to the numbers. But let's get back to our original question: Will Powerwave Technologies miss its numbers in the next quarter or two?

I would not be surprised if there were trouble ahead. For the last fully reported fiscal quarter, Powerwave Technologies's year-over-year revenue grew 23.2%, and its AR grew 30.8%. That looks OK. End-of-quarter DSO decreased 1.4% from the prior-year quarter. It was up 6.8% versus the prior quarter. Still, I'm no fortuneteller, and these are just numbers. Investors putting their money on the line always need to dig into the filings for the root causes and draw their own conclusions.

What now?

Powerwave Technologies Shares Popped:
What You Need to Know...

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of wireless networking hardware maker Powerwave Technologies (Nasdaq: PWAV) are getting a strong signal today, trading as much as 13.6% higher on rather ordinary volume.

So what: Powerwave has no news to support this move, no earnings report, no analyst rating changes, nor even any significant news from its very limited range of direct rivals. It's just one of those inexplicable moves.

Now what: I'm even hesitant to point to some large buyer taking or expanding a position in Powerwave, because the volume is so low and options trading nearly zero today. Maybe the company was mentioned in a positive light on CNBC or Bloomberg TV, but that idea is difficult to confirm or disprove. What you really need to know is that the stock has more than tripled over the last year, but Powerwave's financial statements are far from soothing bedtime reading. Is this stock setting itself up for a fall?

Powerwave Technologies Showcases Cutting-Edge 4G Inside...
by Business Wire  Mar 21 2011 6:00AM

ORLANDO, Fla., Mar 21, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Powerwave Technologies Inc. (PWAV) will showcase its cutting-edge new 4G network infrastructure products at International CTIA Wireless 2011 next week. The show runs from March 22-24 in Orlando, FL, at the Orange County Convention Center.

Powerwave's lineup of new products is lead by the Powerwave Picocell and Active Array Antenna, both of which are finalists for a CTIA E-Tech Award. In addition, Powerwave will be showing its new iCC Internet Commanded Combiner and a complete line of RF broadband site solutions for fast and economic deployment of 4G networks that includes signal combiners, signal amplifiers and broadband antennas.

"The technology story of the year is 4G networks, and the competition is intense for carriers to roll out services to customers as quickly as possible," said Ronald J. Buschur, president and CEO at Powerwave. "The fastest and most economical way to do this is by upgrading existing cell sites with equipment that can support both legacy 2G/3G while transitioning to 4G. Powerwave is taking a leadership role in delivering the products carriers need right now and into the future."

The iCC Internet Commanded Combiner facilitates feed line and antenna sharing from two or more 2G, 3G or 4G radio heads or base transceiver systems (BTS). Because it can be tuned remotely, it is a major advancement from conventional filter combiners that have extremely restricted flexibility in adapting filter response because they are either fixed-tuned or manually tuned. The iCC enables the immediate rollout of profitable LTE services at a fraction of the time and cost of building out new or separate BTS infrastructure for LTE services.

Powerwave's tower mounted amplifiers boost capacity and coverage for 2G/3G and LTE deployments. They combine field-proven reliability with state-of-the-art small size that minimizes tower load and visual impact. With the improved coverage from these TMAs, carriers can cut the number of sites needed for nationwide coverage.

Powerwave, an industry veteran in antenna design innovation with over a million antennas deployed worldwide, will be displaying the company's new dual and triple broadband antenna products that combine 2G/3G and 4G frequency bands on a single antenna with integrated remote electrical tilt functionality for superior performance, efficiency and flexibility. The company is also showcasing broadband site solutions including dual-band AWS/PCS LTE SIMO overlay combiners, LTE MIMO reconfigurable frequency and bandwidth combiners, an LTE700 crossband combiner, diplexer and triplexer, WiMAX/LTE 2600 crossband combiners, a universal crossband combiner and a micro twin 2600 LTE tower mounted amplifier.

Visit Powerwave at International CTIA Wireless 2011 from March 22-24 in Orlando, Florida at Booth #2459 for complete information and demos of the company's latest 4G infrastructure offerings.

Powerwave Debuts New Active Array Antenna and Remote...
by Business Wire  Mar 22 2011 6:00AM

ORLANDO, Fla., Mar 22, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Powerwave Technologies Inc. (PWAV), a global leader in advanced wireless solutions, introduced today the new Powerwave Active Array Antenna and Powerwave Remote Radio Head with 65MHz of instantaneous bandwidth to help carriers build 4G networks with the maximum range and frequency flexibility possible.

The Active Array Antenna and 65MHz Remote Radio Head (RRH) both make their North American debut at CTIA WIRELESS 2011 (March 22-24 in Orlando, FL) at booth #2459. They are key additions to Powerwave's Inside Out Solutions(TM) network strategy, which is designed to provide ubiquitous mobile broadband coverage both inside buildings and outdoors in large venues.

"The exploding demand for mobile Internet is driving carriers to rethink everything from revenue models to rebuilding their networks to get to 4G," said Khurram Sheikh, chief technical officer at Powerwave. "These new products were designed to help carriers evolve to 4G in a way the addresses this new paradigm. From the expanded range and decreased power draw of the Active Array Antenna to the instantaneous re-tuning of the 65MHz RRH, carriers now have more flexibility and lower operations costs than before."

Active Array Antenna

The Active Array Antenna combines Powerwave's award-winning remote radio head and antenna technologies into a single integrated design with a 3dB - 5dB link budget that increases a basestation's coverage radius by 100 percent over non-integrated antennas. The integrated design also reduces power consumption by 40 percent, making the antenna a much more cost-effective alternative. The antenna's compact design has the same height, width and front windloading as a conventional antenna, enabling like-for-like swapping of existing tower infrastructure.

The Active Array Antenna is a total RF solution integrated into a single radome containing all the subsystems necessary to deploy the complete 3G or 4G RF subsystem up the tower in frequency bands from 700 MHz to 2.7 GHz. These include wideband world radio transceiver, power amplifier with advanced DPD and CFR algorithms, integrated filter and duplexer, low noise amplifier (LNA) and cross-polarized antenna with the greatest gain per unit length. The antenna supports a wide variety of protocols, including CDMA, WCDMA, HSPA+, WiMAX(TM) and LTE(R).

Remote Radio Head with 65MHz Instantaneous Bandwidth

The instantaneous bandwidth capability of the 65MHz RRH eliminates the need to either tune the product or deploy multiple radio heads to cover different frequency bands. This gives wireless operators the flexibility to deploy a single radio head and configure it via software for a variety of carrier configurations and technologies without having to physically revisit the cell site.

Designed for 3G or 4G networks operating in 700 MHz to 2700 MHz bands, the 65MHz RRH's integrated software-defined radio allows for simultaneous operation of independent protocols, providing seamless migration of legacy 3G networks to LTE. The small and lightweight form factor coupled with a fiber fed structure enables rapid installation and remote management. The 65MHz RRH can be tower or rooftop mounted, supporting an extensive combination of carrier configurations.

The 65MHz RRH provides wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multi-mode capability with power levels ranging from 10W through 50W per transmit path in combinations of 2T2R, 2T4R and 4T4R. It is capable of supporting virtually endless combinations of HSDPA, EV-DO, WiMAX(TM), and LTE air interfaces simultaneously.
