Leaner Inventory Lifts Dillard's
Miriam Marcus, 03.01.10, 05:15 PM EST
Retailer's shares soar on better-than-expected Q4 earnings.

Department store operator Dillard's had a blowout day on Wall Street Monday. Shares of the Little Rock, Ark.-based company jumped nearly 20% on greatly improved year-over-year quarterly earnings, making Dillard's the second-biggest gainer on the New York Stock Exchange in March's first day of trading.

Dillard's ( DDS - news - people ) said its fourth-quarter sales fell 10% to $1.8 billion, but lower costs and improved inventory levels helped it post a profit of $79.5 million, or $1.08 per share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $149.3 million, or $2.03 per share. The retailer attributed its solid performance to gross margin that improved to 820 basis points of sales.

Standard & Poor's Equity Research upped its rating on Dillard's shares to hold from sell on the results and raised its target price to $20, from $11, leading shares to surge as high as $20.17 in intraday trading before falling slightly to close with an 18.7% gain at $20.03. Elsewhere in the retail sector, shares of TJX Companies ( TJX - news - people ), which operates Marshalls and TJ Maxx stores, edged up 0.1% to $41.67, while Dress Barn ( DBRN - news - people ) gained 3.5% to close at $25.73.

Investors bid Dress Barn's stock up in anticipation that the women's apparel retailer would post significant improvements in its fiscal 2010 second quarter after the closing bell. This was not a tall order since Dress Barn lost $1.8 million, or 3 cents per share, in the year-earlier quarter, but shareholders were disappointed when the Suffern, N.Y.-based company reported earnings of $21.7 million, or 28 cents per share, missing analyst expectations, even as it returned to year-over-year profitability.

After-hours traders seemed to shrug off Dress Barn's 73.1% improvement in quarterly sales, to $594.1 million, which were primarily attributed to the inclusion of Justice brand sales, which Dress Barn acquired in November. Still, the company increased its fiscal year earnings guidance to a range of $1.55 to $1.60 per share, ahead of analyst expectations for 2010 earnings of $1.53 per share.

Retail sales have begun to pick up recently as consumers slowly begin to open their wallets despite the recession's lingering impact and high unemployment. January data on household finances showed that personal incomes grew slower than expected while spending rose slightly ahead of expectations at 0.5%. Financial advisors have speculated that the uptick in retail sales may just be a dead cat bounce since any improvement is relative to the severely depressed figures reported a year ago. (See "Don't Bet On A Retail Recovery.")

Last week upscale department store chain Saks ( SKS - news - people ) and jewelry retailer Zales also showed improved quarterly results on trimmed costs and tighter inventory controls. Wall Street Strategies analyst Brian Sozzi noted that this return to basics approach was important for retailers navigating the sluggish economy. (See "Good Execution For Saks And Zales.")

"Although consumers are opening up to making nonessential purchases (evident in the results from Target ( TGT - news - people ) and Polo Ralph Lauren ( RL - news - people )), there is a hesitance by retail executives to aggressively rebuild inventory," Sozzi said.

Shares of Saks closed up 1.7% to $7.10, while Target added 1.4% to $52.24 and Polo Ralph Lauren gained 1% to $80.76. Shares of Nordstrom ( JWN - news - people ), which disappointed Wall Street last week, saw shares rise 1.8% to $37.59 on Monday, and J.C. Penney ( JCP - news - people ) pushed up 1.2% to $27.92 after reporting last month that its quarterly sales were sluggish even as it offered an upbeat outlook for the year. (See "Nordstrom Registers Disappointing Results" and "Penney Pinches Its Way To Impressive Profits.")

Dillard's Inc. (NYSE:DDS) is another department store stock that is looking weak. DDS was in a consolidation earlier this summer as it built a triangle base through mid June. It fell out of the triangle confirming the base as a top and failed a retest of this level later in July. DDS is slowly making its way lower and is also in a pattern of lower lows and lower highs. The near term level to watch is the recent failure at the $24 level for resistance and its recent low near $19.

Dillard Clocks Positive Sales

Dillard's Inc. (NYSE: DDS) reported a 7% increase in same-store sales for the five weeks ended January 1, 2011. Results for the reported month compare favorably with a same-store sales decline of 7% for the five weeks ended January 2, 2010.

Merchandise sales for the period increased 6% to $1.1 billion. On a regional basis, sales trend was above average in the East, in line with trend in the Central region but below average in the West.

While sales in the shoes category shone, trends for cosmetics sales were substantially below par.

Year-to-date sales were $5.6 billion, up 2% over the year-ago period. Comparable stores sales edged up 3% for the 48-week period.

During the third quarter 2010, Dillard's reported earnings of 22 cents a share outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 6 cents and prior-year quarter loss of 3 cents a share. Net sales in the quarter were $1.34 billion, down 1% year over year. However, comparable-store sales inched up 1%.

Kohl's Corporation (NYSE: KSS) , in competition with Dillard's, reported December same-store sales increase of 3.9%, with total sales climbing 5.9%. Macy's Inc. (NYSE: M) also reported December same-store sales increase of 3.9% while total sales jumped 4.5%. Same-store sales of another peer, J. C. Penney Company Inc.(NYSE: JCP), for the month of December, increased 3.7% with total sales improving 2.3%. The sales speak of a rosy retail scenario during December.

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for fourth-quarter 2010 is $1.25 per share. For full years 2010 and 2011, the Zacks Consensus Estimates are, respectively, $2.24 per share and $2.59 per share.

We maintain our "Outperform" recommendation on Dillard's Inc. over the long term. The quantitative Zacks #1 Rank (short term Strong-Buy rating) on the stock indicates an upward pressure on the stock over the near term.
