Nice catch Terlisa, applaud!  Looks like the Force is with this one, too  ;)

I think I may pick up some shares myself also given the charts and the fact that in my old professional life I used to work with UMC quite regularly, have been to their foundries in Taiwan, etc.  Plus Semis seem to be in a good uptrend as we are seeing from the charts EliteG has been posting.

Made some good money last year trading their competitor TSM (I held it longer than 3SOF did), now its could be UMCs turn to pay me back for long hours spent working to please them in the past!  Would to set a tight stop though because this one has a very high P/E compared to TSM... also considering trying to buy if it comes down to fill the gap.

UMC Pays Investors To Stick Around....... ;D ;) :D

TAIPEI, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Shares of Taiwan's UMC ((2303.TW)) rose nearly 7 percent, their daily limit, to a seven-week high in early Tuesday trade after the world's No. 2 contract chipmaker announced a plan of returning T$57.39 billion (US$1.74 billion) cash to shareholders.

Shareholders of United Microelectronics Corp. would get T$3 per share held as the company cancels 5.74 billion shares, it said in a statement released late on Tuesday.

Upon completion of the programme, the company's outstanding capital will be reduced by T$57.39 billion, or 30 percent of total, to about T$133.92 billion, UMC said.

TAIPEI, Oct 9 (Reuters) - UMC ((2303.TW)), the world's No.2 contract chip maker, said on Tuesday its September sales rose 14.2 percent from a year ago, topping that of sector leader TSMC ((2330.TW)), as the companies ride on a consumer boom. United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) (UMC,Trade) garnered sales of T$10.542 billion ($323 million) last month, higher than T$9.234 billion a year earlier and T$10.433 billion in August, the company said on it Web site (www.umc.com).

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

TAIPEI, Oct 9 (Reuters) - TSMC ((2330.TW)) and UMC ((2303.TW)), the world's two largest contract chip makers, wrapped up the third quarter with a rise in September sales on Tuesday as they benefited from growing chip demand for PCs and consumer gadgets.

But analysts were turning cautious on the foundry market into the fourth quarter and early 2008 amid fears of a re-emergence of an inventory build-up if the U.S. subprime market woes persist, which would take a toll on consumption.

September sales boosted TSMC's (TSM,Trade) consolidated revenue in the third quarter 7.9 percent from a year earlier -- to the higher end of TSMC's own forecast of between T$87 billion ($2.67 billion) and T$89 billion for the quarter.

But Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) (UMC,Trade) could not be immune to a slowdown as they sell most of their products to clients in the United States, including Texas Instruments Inc (TXN,Trade).

"Perhaps we will start seeing some impact (from the credit crunch) in Christmas," said Grand Cathay Securities analyst Kevin Yeh.

"The third quarter was a good quarter but if sales are not good during Christmas, then inventory pressure will be heavy in the first quarter next year."

Slower sales growth and a decline in capital spending are likely next year.

In a September note, BNP Paribas said sales at Taiwan's major foundries would grow by 9 percent annually versus an average 16 percent gain during 2001 and 2006. No 2007 estimates were given. Their capital expenditures could fall 3.3 percent in 2008 following an 11.6 percent rise in 2007, said BNP, which has a "neutral" rating on the foundry sector.

TSMC's unconsolidated sales reached T$28.5 billion last month, up 6.1 percent from a year earlier but down 2.4 percent from August's level.

Its third-quarter consolidated sales totalled T$88.954 billion, according to Reuters calculations. That was higher than T$82.441 billion in the year-ago period.

UMC garnered sales of T$10.542 billion in September, 14.2 percent higher than the year-ago figure and up 1 percent from August.

TSMC announced the sales results as Taiwan's stock market closed on Tuesday, when its shares fell 0.31 percent to T$64.80. UMC shares ended up 1.08 percent at T$23.45, outperforming the main TAIEX's ((.TWII)) 0.8 percent drop. (US$1=T$32.6)
