BOSTON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Unisys Corp.'s (UIS,Trade) stock rose as much as 8 percent on Friday, hitting a four-month high, on expectations the computer company's quarterly results will show improvement when the company reports next week.

UBS analyst Jason Kupferberg said that Wall Street sentiment toward Unisys, which sells mainframe computers and provides technology services, is poised to improve after it reports third-quarter results and comments on its outlook in an Oct. 25 conference call.

Unisys has posted losses for seven consecutive quarters and has launched a restructuring program, including layoffs and re-aligning business divisions, to cut costs and rebuild itself as a technology services company amid declining demand for its mainframe computers.

"We believe that sentiment is overly negative and that the stock has yet to reflect the degree of progress that has already been made with regard to the company's restructuring plan," Kupferberg said by phone on Friday.

Kupferberg, who has a buy rating on Unisys shares, forecast third-quarter total revenue to rise 5.1 percent from a year ago to $1.458 billion.

Wall Street on average is expecting Unisys to report a third-quarter net loss of 3 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier loss of 16 cents. Revenue is expected to rise to $1.42 billion from $1.39 billion, according to Reuters Estimates.

Chief Executive Joseph McGrath said during Unisys' second-quarter earnings call in July that orders are expected to pick up in the second half of the year.

Morgan Stanley analyst Julie Santoriello said in a Thursday note to investors that she believed Unisys' services orders grew "at a healthy double digit pace" during the third quarter. She also is expecting sales of mainframe computers to pick up in the fourth quarter of this year as customers upgrade to new products.

"The second-half 2006 story appears solidly on track," she said in her note to investors. Santoriello could not be reached for additional comment on Friday.

Santoriello, who has an "overweight" rating on the stock, forecast revenue at $1.411 billion in the third quarter, and a per-share GAAP loss of 3 cents.

Unisys reported a net loss in the second quarter of $194.6 million, or 57 cents a share, including a pretax charge of $141.2 million. Revenue declined 2 percent to $1.41 billion.

Shares in Unisys, based in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, closed up 39 cents at $6.63 on the New York Stock Exchange after rising as high as $6.73.

Unisys declined comment on the stock rise.

Unisys Jumps After Inking Agreement With FBI for Search Engine Tool

NEW YORK (AP) -- The following companies showed unusually heavy volume in trading Friday on the New York Stock Exchange around 3 p.m. Higher-than-normal volume can indicate increased activity by institutions such as mutual funds and insurance companies. Upward stock movement on such volume can show increased confidence among investors, while selling can signal further downward pressure on a stock.

Volume of Unisys Corp. shares jumped a day after it agreed with the FBI to develop and deploy its search engine tool designed to aid crime resolution and DNA matching. If all options of the contract are exercised, the estimated value for Unisys is $50 million.

Trading volume jumped to 5.4 million shares, compared to average volume of 1.6 million shares, with shares rising 37 cents, or 6 percent, to $6.61.

Vulcan Materials Co., which manufactures construction aggregates, like crushed stone and gravel, saw share volume spike after Goldman Sachs downgraded the company. Analyst Jack L. Kelly lowered his rating on the shares to "Neutral" from "Buy," saying that weak residential construction and slower infrastructure spending could hurt volume in coming quarters.

Shares of the Birmingham, Ala.-based company declined 5.8 percent as volume jumped to 2.1 million, compared to average volume of 819,700.

Trading volume of movie rental company Blockbuster Inc. rose to 3.6 million shares, compared to average volume of 1.6 million shares. On Thursday, JP Morgan analyst Barton Crockett cut his third-quarter estimates on the company to reflect a more conservative view of store-based rentals.

Elsewhere, shares of Caterpillar Inc. soared on unusually high volume after the heavy equipment company issued a gloomy forecast for this year and next.

The Peoria, Ill.-based company slashed its full-year earnings forecast, citing high operating costs and lower-than-expected sales volumes. The company also said it expects a slowdown in 2007 when regulations regarding new diesel engine emissions take effect.

Volume jumped to 54.2 million shares, compared to average daily volume of around 5.7 million shares. The stock was down $9.33, or 13.6 percent, to $59.67.

News that Agrium Inc. sharply lowered its earnings guidance for the second half of the year sent the fertilizer producer's trading volume to 2.7 million shares versus average daily volume of about 555,200. The company cited a longer-than-expected startup of an expansion at a facility and production interruptions, among other factors.

Shares fell $2.27, or 8 percent, to $26.50.

FBI Contracts with Unisys for Development and Deployment of Next-Generation Combined DNA Index System
Thursday October 19, 9:00 am ET
Search engine tool will accelerate DNA matching process, aid in crime resolution

BLUE BELL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Unisys Corporation (NYSE:UIS - News) announced today that the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has awarded the company a contract for the development and deployment of the Next-Generation Combined DNA Index System (NGCODIS). Under the contract, Unisys will provide the FBI with software development, deployment and optional operations and maintenance support.

The development contract has a two-year base period, a two-year option, and two one-year options exercisable at the sole discretion of the government. The estimated value for the two-year base period is $11 million. If all option years are exercised, the estimated value to Unisys could be $50 million. Unisys will partner with the University of Tennessee, Laboratory of Information Technologies; IBM; the University of Cincinnati and iSYS LLC to provide the NGCODIS solution for the government.

Chief among the benefits of the NGCODIS solution to the FBI are scalability and flexibility to meet the increased demand for DNA matching and associated technologies. In addition, the Unisys solution will employ a highly sophisticated search engine technology that will greatly accelerate the DNA matching process and will be adaptable in accordance with recent legislation changes with regard to DNA sampling.

NGCODIS also supports the mission of solving missing person cases by providing an advanced analysis algorithm that accurately ranks matches between unidentified human remains to biological relatives.

The FBI laboratory's Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) is a mission-critical program that allows federal, state and local labs to share and compare DNA profiles, enabling the national and international linkage of convicted offenders to violent crimes.

"We look forward to helping the FBI take CODIS to the next level by integrating technology that will enable quicker resolution of crimes and apprehension of criminals via secure information sharing. The DOJ and FBI clearly recognize the advantages of making security a catalyst for crime solving," said Ted Davies, managing partner, civilian agencies, Unisys Federal Systems.

Presently, there are 178 national DNA index system participating labs (126 local and 52 state systems) that include the FBI, the U.S. Army and Puerto Rico. This database contains approximately 3.7 million offender profiles and 150,000 forensic profiles. Through August 2006, CODIS has aided 38,295 investigations in 49 states and two federal laboratories.

Unisys NGCODIS solution will be deployed to all U.S. labs and to crime labs in 26 countries. The international systems represent each country's national forensic DNA database and do not communicate with each other or with the U.S. systems. NGCODIS will support the FBI enterprise architecture initiatives by promoting secure information sharing among FBI CODIS crime labs.

A study reference of the pattern for you...

Bullish Price Channel (continuation) Pattern
Price Channel (Continuation)
A price channel is a continuation pattern that slopes up or down and is bound by an upper and lower trend line. The upper trend line marks resistance and the lower trend line marks support. Price channels with negative slopes (down) are considered bearish and those with positive slopes (up) bullish. For explanatory purposes, a "bullish price channel" will refer to a channel with positive slope and a "bearish price channel" to a channel with negative slope.

In a bullish price channel, some traders look to buy when prices reach main trend line support. Conversely, some traders look to sell (or short) when prices reach main trend line resistance in a bearish price channel. As with most price patterns, other aspects of technical analysis should be used to confirm signals.

Because technical analysis is just as much art as it is science, there is room for flexibility. Even though exact trend line touches are ideal, it is up to each individual to judge the relevance and placement of both the main trend line and the channel line. By that same token, a channel line that is exactly parallel to the main trend line is ideal.

Let's see if this pup can breakout to the upside from this pattern...... 8)

Flag, Pennant (Continuation)
Flags and Pennants are short-term continuation patterns that mark a small consolidation before the previous move resumes. These patterns are usually preceded by a sharp advance or decline with heavy volume, and mark a mid-point of the move.

Even though flags and pennants are common formations, identification guidelines should not be taken lightly. It is important that flags and pennants are preceded by a sharp advance or decline. Without a sharp move, the reliability of the formation becomes questionable and trading could carry added risk. Look for volume confirmation on the initial move, consolidation and resumption to augment the robustness of pattern identification.

Pennant: A pennant is a small symmetrical triangle that begins wide and converges as the pattern matures (like a cone). The slope is usually neutral. Sometimes there will not be specific reaction highs and lows from which to draw the trend lines and the price action should just be contained within the converging trend lines.

Flag: A flag is a small rectangle pattern that slopes against the previous trend. If the previous move was up, then the flag would slope down. If the move was down, then the flag would slope up. Because flags are usually too short in duration to actually have reaction highs and lows, the price action just needs to be contained within two parallel trend lines.

Hi -
When you decide on targets, check out the options on this stock. For Jan07 (expire 3rd Friday in Jan 07), there are 26K call AND 26K put contracts at the $5 strike. That's equivalent to 2.6M shares. I think it will be hard to get through $5 ... if it can get through, that might help provide support. 11/15/06 - the stock high was 5.00 exactly...

WOW, what a chart!  :o  But the RSI at 88 scares me a little. Might be worth a short in the near-term?

EDIT: Although, this might be like jumping out in front of a bus.
