BUSINESS SUMMARY:  

Advanced Energy Industries, Inc., along with its subsidiaries, engages in the design, manufacture, and support of components and subsystems for industrial vacuum-based production systems in the United States. It offers power systems, including direct current, high power, low and mid frequency, and radio frequency (RF) power supplies; matching networks; and RF instrumentation. These products are used by semiconductor, flat panel display, data storage protective layering, and architectural glass manufacturers in physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, reactive sputtering, electroplating, plasma vacuum processes, carbon dioxide laser excitation, and oxide, poly, and conductor etch applications. The company provides flow management products, such as thermal mass flow controllers, pressure-based MFCs, liquid MFCs, liquid vapor delivery systems, pressure control systems, and ultrasonic control systems that control and monitor the flow of high-purity liquids, liquid vapor, and gases in a range of input pressures. These products are used in semiconductor applications, flat panel manufacturing fiber optics, delivery system applications, chemical vapor deposition, and silica industries. It offers thermal instrumentation products that provide thermal management and control solutions for semiconductor industry applications. These products are used in physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, rapid thermal processing, and other semiconductor applications. The company provides source technology products, including plasma and ion beam sources for use in the direct deposition of thin films of diamond-like carbon, ion-assisted deposition, ion beam etching, optical coating, industrial coating, precleaning, and chamber cleaning. It also sells spare parts, and provides repair services. Advanced Energy Industries was founded in 1981 and is headquartered in Fort Collins, Colorado.

--The company said excluding a net tax benefit of $23.5 million and using the same effective tax rate as the third quarter, latest-quarter income from continuing operations would have been $15.9 million, or 35 cents per share.

--For the latest quarter, analysts on average had expected the company to earn 34 cents a share, excluding exceptional items, according to Reuters Estimates.

--The maker of power conversion and control sytems used in precision manufacturing forecast first-quarter earnings of 26 cents to 29 cents a share on sales of $102 million to $106 million.

--Excluding the effect of reversing the valuation allowance related to deferred tax assets, Advanced Energy expects earnings of of 35 cents to 40 cents during the period.

Hi Setravis. I agree AEIS should be a winner and intend to hold my full allocation through next weeks ER. The solar equipment market, while now only representing 5% of their revenue could present a huge growth area for them in coming years. Hopefully it will become a very LT holding for me.

I also agree, high insider ownership is certainly a +, but at what point would you consider perhaps too much? I ask this because another stock I'm interested in has 63% insider ownership. Would that much make you uncomfortable in a $880M company?

Yes ,that much would make me uncomfortable.
Insider ownership @ 25% I am happy with.
Just as in Institutional Sponsorship.
A little goes a long way.
Three to ten might be a minimum or reasonable number of sponsors.
Excessive sponsorship can be adverse since it merely represents large potential
selling if anything goes wrong in the company or the general market.
Sponsorship provides buying support when you want to get out of an investment.
Institutional sponsorship helps provide continuous marketability and liquidity.

It's not a KO report, but this part about the solar revs increasing is very good. Still only 7% of sales, lots of room for growth there.

"We are pleased with our results this quarter and are particularly encouraged by the strength in the semiconductor and solar markets. Semiconductor revenues were sequentially 8% higher than the fourth quarter of 2006, and solar revenues were 103% higher from the prior quarter representing 7% of our overall sales," said Dr. Hans Betz, president and chief executive officer of Advanced Energy.

Advanced Energy Stock Climbs on Analyst Ratings, After 1Q Earnings Top Street Estimates


NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Advanced Energy Industries Inc., which makes equipment used to make semiconductors, soared Thursday as two analysts praised the company's solar business a day after it reported first-quarter earnings.


The stock of the Fort Collins, Colo., company jumped $3.37, or 15.7 percent, to $24.84 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

On Wednesday, the company said its first-quarter earnings dipped to $12.7 million, or 28 cents per share, in the first quarter from $12.8 million, or 28 cents per share, from the year-ago period. The results included a restructuring charge of $2.8 million from a factory closing in Germany and reflected an increased tax rate from the prior year.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected 27 cents per share for the quarter.

First-quarter sales jumped more than 14 percent to $107.3 million from $94 million from the previous year.

Analyst Robert Maire of Needham Co. on Thursday maintained his "Buy" rating for the stock and raised his one year price target to $28 from $22. Maire said this reflects "what we see as the ever increasing potential of the non-semiconductor business, especially the solar thin film business."

Advanced Energy's solar business more than doubled from the fourth quarter of 2006 and represented 7 percent of total sales, Maire said, while its semiconductor business rose 8 percent from the fourth quarter and made up 71 percent of revenue. The company also outpaced the industry in growth and market share, Maire pointed out.

Meanwhile, Timothy M. Arcuri, an analyst with Citigroup Global Markets, maintained his rating of "Hold" and raised his price target to $22 from $18 and full-year estimate to $1.03 per share from 87 cents.

Like Maire, Arcuri thinks Advanced Energy is well-positioned to capitalize on the solar business, but believes that "the real opportunity in solar could be a year or two away."
