UTStarcom Shares Rise in Early Trading Following Update on Turnaround Strategies

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of UTStarcom Inc. rose in early trading Tuesday, after the telecommunications equipment maker issued an update on its strategies to return to sustainable revenue growth and profitability.

Shares rose 12 cents, or 3.9 percent, to $3.21.

The company said in a conference call late Monday it is working to reduce quarterly operating expenses by $10 million to $15 million per quarter. It plans to outsource some operations, invest in Internet-protocol research and development, and make other changes.

UTStarcom also said it will restate several years worth of financial results due to an accounting issue within its Chinese operations. The company has been dealing with an investigation into its past stock options grants, and recently concluded a strategic review, deciding not to pursue a sale. Shares are down about 63 percent in the past six months.

Jefferies & Co. analyst Bill Choi maintained a "Hold" rating on shares with a $4.25 target price.

"UTStarcom continues to face substantial risks with respect to ongoing restructuring, continuing losses and liquidity concerns, but we believe the company has plans to address these issues," he wrote in a note to clients. "The stock could trade-up in the near-term in anticipation of successful execution of the strategy."

Banc of America Securities analyst Tim Long said the conference call lacked the details he was looking for, and cut his target price on the stock to $3 from $6.50.

He also said the company's future performance is not easy to predict, and has a weak position in most of its end markets. Long maintained a "Neutral" rating on shares.

PR Newswire(Fri, May 9)

Our Cellphones, Ourselves

Verizon's GzOne, a sturdy flip phone from UTStarcom (nasdaq: UTSI - news - people ), offers another kind of functionality: It's built to resist water, dust and shock. If you own one, you're sending the signal that you're an outdoorsy, athletic type. Have an LG Voyager? The phone's large screen, full keyboard and high cost point to early adopters with voracious appetites for online surfing, texting and video watching. Though nearly a year has passed since the release of the iPhone, the handset still confers a cool, members-only type of status upon its owners, experts say.

UTStarcom swings to $25.4M Q1 profit

UTStarcom Inc. posted a first-quarter profit with sales up in its personal communications division.

UTStarcom (NASDAQ: UTSI) on Wednesday reported first-quarter net income of $25.4 million, or income of 21 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $54 million, or a loss of 45 cents per share, in the first quarter of 2007. The Alameda company trimmed its operating loss by more than 40 percent, to $30.9 million compared with $52.3 million in the year-ago quarter.

Net sales for the quarter came in at $586 million, up from $475.9 million in the year-ago quarter.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had expected a loss of 10 cents per share on revenue of $549.6 million.

UTStacom reported a gain on sale of investments of $48.3 million and a net $8.5 million tax benefit in China due mainly to a change in withholding tax laws.

UTStacom had cash, cash equivalents and short term investments of $305 million at the end of the quarter, and total debt of $36 million after paying off $290 million of convertible notes and accrued interest during the quarter.

"During the first quarter we made progress in moving the company forward in terms of both financial and operational results," Peter Blackmore, UTStarcom's president and chief operating officer, said in the company's earnings release. "Our core areas of Multimedia Communications and Broadband continued to win new business in key markets while the Personal Communications Division's results benefited from the introduction of new high-end products. While we are encouraged by this quarter's developments, we recognize that this is only a step along our turnaround path and we will continue to push for improvements throughout the company's activities."

For the second quarter, UTStacom said it expects revenue to be in the range of $580 million and $610 million.

UTStarcom wraps up $240M sale of unit to AIG, exec gets $1.5M bonusSan Francisco Business Times - by Steven E.F. Brown

UTStarcom Inc. completed the sale of its "personal communications" division, which sells phone handsets, to a unit of AIG Investments for about $240 million.

The $240 million price is "subject to certain adjustments," the company said. In a regulatory filing, UTStarcom said $24.3 million of the price is subject to escrow.

The division will be renamed Personal Communications Devices LLC and will be run by the managers who led it at UTStarcom -- they will will own part of the company.

Philip Christopher, who ran the operation for UTStarcom, will be paid a bonus of $1.5 million as he leaves the company to take his new job at Personal Communications Devices, and UTStarcom will pay a premium in the amount of $52,221 on his life insurance policy.

The buyer was a new entity controlled by AIG Vantage Capital, part of AIG Investments. American International Group Inc. (NYSE: AIG) is based in New York.

The deal means Alameda-based UTStarcom (NASDAQ: UTSI) could be paid up to $50 million more over three years.

Selling off the 193-employee division was part of the company's strategy, adopted last year, of focusing on Internet protocol technology sales to developing countries. In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, the company said the strategy "will provide sufficient liquidity" to pay for company operations over the next year.

Though it made a profit of $25.4 million in the quarter ended March, UTStarcom lost $195.6 million in 2007, on top of losses of $117.3 million in 2006 and $532.6 million in 2005. Its accumulated deficit as of March 31 -- how much money it has lost since it started -- was $665.8 million.

Peter Blackmore is president and CEO of UTStarcom.

UTStarcom sells cell-phone distribution unit

UTStarcom sells cell-phone distribution unit to AIG Investments for about $240 million

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- UTStarcom Inc. said Monday it has completed its sale of the telecommunications company's cell-phone distribution division to a unit of AIG Investments for about $240 million.
In a regulatory filing Monday, UTStarcom said $24.3 million of the price is subject to escrow, and the amount may be subject to an adjustment. UTStarcom could also be paid up to $50 million more in 2011 based on the earnings of the division.

Philip Christopher, the former president of the personal communications division, will be paid $1.5 million for termination of his employment related to the sale.

UTStarcom will also pay a $52,221 life insurance premium for Christopher's benefit.

UTStarcom has been selling off units to focus on making Internet TV set-top boxes, particularly for the Chinese and Indian markets, where cable TV service is less common than in the U.S.

Shares of UTStarcom stock rose 47 cents, or 10.22 percent, to $5.07 Monday, before dropping 18 cents, or 3.55 percent, to $4.89 in after-hours trading.
