Earnings come out later this week.

Look for it to exceed estimates. //

I will buy before close of market today. All the trends are pointing to excellent revenue and earnings. Lack of competition in the mobile data market has provided RIMM pricing power. Look for it to move 2+% today. I expect it to jump nicely after hours today. I will sell before close tomorrow.

With a new 3-month high close crossing above the 200 EMA, RIMM looks ready for a rally.  The CNBC stories about RIMM service getting shut down drew in a lot of novice shorters who are ripe for a squeeze.

Might be worth keeping an eye on RIMM today.  It's a key tech indicator and darling and looks like it may break down out of this ascending triangle today.  If the markets have another day of selling, we could see it get taken down here.  The technical target of the ascending triangle breakdown would be:

142.66 - 98.75 = 43.91, breakdown at 133.25 => 89.34.  Or 33% below where it is currently sitting, and right at the bottom of that big gap.

Obviously, RIMM is a very strong stock, and that seems a long way down, but if the market keeps doing what its doing, I think we could easily see it re-test 120 support in short order.

On a break of this level, shorting a move to the 1st target of 120 would represent a 10% gain.  With an aggressive stop at 138.50, the risk would be just under 4%.  A more conservative stop (above $143 AT resistance) would represent a risk of 7.3%.

On other notes, GOOG looks like it could take a serious hit today as Viacom takes it to court over YouTube content inn a $1B lawsuit.  I think we will see that drag all of tech down with it, so there could be more blood on the streets today.

Get those RIMM positions in place!  Regardless of which way you think it's going to go, it promises to be a market mover  :D

Some really good stocks like RIMM are starting to look pretty cheap.  Analysts expect RIMM to make $3.39 in 08, so this gives us a forward PE of less than 30.  Not that high for a company that has delivered so beautifully.  Also keep in mind Crackberry to be sold in China starting this month and Russia via VIP and MBT in early 08, not specified that I'm sure of.

overall market discussion...I don't see how this can last much longer.  The market will rally based on talk of fed cuts.  We need 50 bp minimum, we might even get 75 basis points.  I think people will look back at these days and wish they had bought some great stocks.  All the best are getting whacked, thats a good sign of capitulation in my book.  I have lost so much friggin money in the past 3 days..especially monday and last friday.

For example CHL in August...dipped below 50 and then made a mad dash for 100 that finished in less than 3 months, about 9 weeks.

I think there are some terrific values and once this baby turns around and rallies huge like I think it might, we want to hold on to names like these that will rally with the market, more than the market.

RIMM continues to trade in a tight range between its 200 day-moving averge acting as support and its 20 day-moving average acting as resistance. Stock should have an explosive move to either direction next week, although I think a bullish move is more likely based on Friday session.

RIMM Misses on Lower Sales...
Friday September 16, 2011

BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion, Ltd., (NasdaqGS: RIMM) declared its second quarter 2012 financial results yesterday, after the closing bell. The company reported top and bottom line results well below the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Following the earnings release, shares of RIMM fell $5.74 (19.43%) to $23.80 in the after market trade in NYSE.

Total revenue in the reported quarter was $4,168 million, down 9.8% year over year and was also below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4,522 million. During quarter, Research In Motion shipped around 10.6 million BlackBerry smartphones and around 200,000 BlackBerry Playbook tablets.

Net income in the second quarter of fiscal 2012 was $329 million or 63 cents per share compared with a net income of $797 million or $1.46 per share in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted EPS (excluding cost optimization program expense) of 80 cents also missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 89 cents.

Gross margin in the reported quarter was 38.7% compared with 44.5% in the year-ago quarter and 43.9% in the previous quarter. Segment wise, Device shipment accounted for 73% of revenues, Services contributed 24% and the remaining 3% came from Software and Other revenue in the second quarter of fiscal 2012.

During the second quarter of fiscal 2012, Research In Motion generated approximately $971 million in cash from operations compared with $2,032 million in the prior-year quarter. At the end of the reported quarter, Research In Motion had $1,149 million in cash and investments and no outstanding debt on its balance sheet compared with approximately $2,867 million in cash and investments and no outstanding debt at the end of first quarter of fiscal 2012.

Future Financial Outlook

Management guided third quarter 2012 revenue between $5.3 billion - $5.6 billion. Gross margin is estimated to be 37%. Quarterly EPS is expected in the range of $1.20 - $1.40. For fiscal 2012, EPS is expected in the range of $5.25 - $6.00. According to management, BlackBerry smartphone shipments are expected to grow within the range of 13.5 million - 14.5 million.

Our Take

Booming smartphone markets and strong fundamentals, coupled with Research In Motion's strong brand value and new release of BlackBerry 7 smartphone will act as positive catalysts for growth. Despite these positive factors, we expect stiff competition from Google Inc.'s (NasdaqGS: GOOG) Android-based smartphones and Apple Inc.'s (NasdaqGS: AAPL) iPhones to result in loss of market share.

Moreover, product delays, huge margin pressure, tepid response from newly launched tablets and lack of popular product launches will act as headwinds for the stock.
