The PMI Group, Inc., through its subsidiaries, provides residential mortgage insurance products that offer loss protection to mortgage lenders and investors in the event of borrower default in the United States. The company offers mortgage insurance products to meet the capital and credit risk mitigation needs of its customers. Its products include primary mortgage insurance through primary flow channel that provide the insured with first-loss mortgage default protection on individual loans at specified coverage percentages; and mortgage insurance to credit unions through its 50% joint venture with CUNA Mutual Investment Corporation. The PMI Group's customers primarily include mortgage lenders, depository institutions, commercial banks, and investors. The company was founded in 1972 and is headquartered in Walnut Creek, California.

PMI Group leads gains among mortgage insurers

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- PMI Group /quotes/comstock/13*!pmi/quotes/nls/pmi (PMI 7.08, -0.02, -0.28%) led gains among mortgage insurers Monday. Barclays Capital analyst Eric Berg said the government's updated Home Affordable Modification Program, or HAMP, is positive for mortgage insurers, after a call least week with Treasury Department officials. Genworth Financial /quotes/comstock/13*!gnw/quotes/nls/gnw (GNW 18.70, +0.25, +1.36%) will likely post smaller mortgage insurance losses in each successive quarter, the analyst added in a note to investors. Berg raised his price target on Genworth shares to $22 from $16. Genworth rose 1.1% in afternoon trading. PMI jumped 11% to $6.38, while MGIC Investment /quotes/comstock/13*!mtg/quotes/nls/mtg (MTG 12.25, +0.09, +0.74%) gained 7.3% and Radian Group /quotes/comstock/13*!rdn/quotes/nls/rdn (RDN 17.05, -0.19, -1.10%) climbed 3.7%
