S&P 500, NYSE Composite Break Three-Day Losing Streak
02/25/2011 04:25 PM ET

Stocks pushed higher Friday as economic data and assurances on oil supply from Saudi Arabia swayed some to pick up bargains.

The Nasdaq rose 1.6%, the NYSE composite 1.2% and the S&P 500 1.1%. The NYSE and S&P 500 broke a three-day losing streak, and the Nasdaq stanched a two-day slide.

Winners beat losers by about 4-to-1 on the NYSE and the Nasdaq. But volume slid 26% on the NYSE and 13% on the Nasdaq, according to preliminary data.

The Medical-Long-Term Care group scored the day's best gains, thanks mostly to high-volume advances by two low-rated issues, Sunrise Senior Living (SRZ) (up 13%) and Capital Senior Living (CSU) (up 9%). But Ensign Group (ENSG), a top-rated name in that group, rose 3%, though in weak trade.

Hospitals also made an appearance among the day's winners.

Several oil-and-gas groups made their way to the top as crude prices rose about $1 a barrel. Natural gas prices, which had been slumping, got a big lift.

Some tech groups surged, including chip designers, chip equipment makers and fiber-optics issues.
