RTK uses the Fischer-Troupe method to synthesize liquid natural gas (which there is plenty of - in fact they burn off the equivelent amount of million of barrels of oil a day because it is too expensive to build pipelines to transport it) into a pure diesel fuel that can be used in any type of vehicle.  The process is the same that SYNM uses - but, what RTK does is rent out the machinery to oil and gas companies to do the procedure themselves.

Facinating technology, alternative fuel category, good earnings report, established co.

It is still in a nice uptrend and moves in tandem with the price of oil.  RTK also does energy consulting work so it is more multifaceted than SYNM.  It is a good company to hold ro the long run - tho it has advanced significantly in the last few months.

News that came out yesterday.......

Press Release Source: Rentech, Inc.

Rentech Issues Progress Report on Coal-to-Liquids Product Development Unit
Wednesday December 7, 11:00 am ET
Orders Major Long Lead Items
(First Fully Integrated US Fischer-Tropsch CTL Facility Expected to be Operational in 2006)

DENVER, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Rentech, Inc. (Amex: RTK - News), a developer and owner of alternative and clean energy solutions, provided an update today on its proposed Fischer-Tropsch (FT) Coal-to-Liquids (CTL) Product Development Unit (PDU) it will be building at its Sand Creek facility in Commerce City, Colorado near Denver. The project, which will utilize Rentech's patented and proprietary FT technology, is expected to be the first Coal-to-Liquids project in the United States that could capitalize on the tax credits available for commercialization of this technology under the Energy and Transportation Bills signed by President Bush in August of this year.

The Sand Creek site, which originally operated as a methanol facility, will have the existing natural gas reformer and methanol synthesis unit removed. All of the associated product storage tanks and some utilities will be retained. The site also provides the opportunity for the future consolidation of Rentech's research, development and engineering functions at one location.

The PDU has been engineered to produce 10-15 barrels per day of ultra-clean FT diesel, naphtha and jet fuel through the Rentech CTL process technology. For Rentech's purposes, a gasifier capable of processing 25-35 tons per day of coal will be used to provide the synthesis gas (a combination of hydrogen and carbon monoxide). Rentech will primarily process eastern and western coal at the facility with the capability to also process petroleum coke as well as biomass. The product upgrading system will be engineered and fabricated by Zeton, Inc. and together with the gasifier from BioConversion Technology, LLC. are the long lead items that the company has already ordered.

The company has also initiated its state and local permitting process. Rentech estimates that the process will take approximately four months. Given the regulatory approval process, there can be no assurance that it will meet this projected time frame. Once permitted, the company will begin site construction, which it has scheduled for the second calendar quarter of 2006. The company believes that the United States' first fully integrated CTL facility will be ready for commissioning and startup in the fourth calendar quarter of 2006.

When in operation, the facility will provide test quantities of ultra- clean fuels to numerous groups which have expressed a strong interest in acquiring commercial quantities of Rentech's fuels. Entities with whom Rentech has been working include the Department of Defense, major metropolitan areas, including Chicago and Houston, as well as state and local government entities in California, Illinois, Ohio, Montana and Wyoming. Moreover, Rentech will also use the facility as a training center to support future Rentech projects and FT system operations.

Hunt Ramsbottom, president of Rentech, Inc., commenting on the progress of the PDU stated: "We are very pleased with the advancement of our work on the Product Development Unit at Sand Creek. Rentech's engineering group has been doing an exceptional job in preparing for this undertaking and getting the overall project underway. Having what we believe will be the first fully integrated FT Coal-to-Liquids facility in the country has strong implications for Rentech and CTL. By providing fuels to potential end users it will demonstrate the valuable and clean products that can be derived from coal. More importantly, the Sand Creek PDU will become a show case for interested parties worldwide to visit Denver and observe CTL technology in operation in a country which is becoming more and more dependent on foreign oil yet has the world's largest coal reserves."

About Rentech, Inc.

Rentech, Inc., a Colorado corporation formed in 1981, is the developer and licensor of a patented and proprietary Fischer-Tropsch gas-to-liquids/coal-to- liquids process for conversion of synthesis gas made from natural gas, industrial off-gas, or solid or liquid carbon-bearing materials, including coal, into high-value fuels and chemicals. These include clean burning, ultra- low-sulfur and ultra-low-aromatic fuels, naphtha, waxes and fuel for fuel cells.

The snow storms in the eastern US and a cold spell should boost all natural gas related stocks in the coming weeks........RTK, however, is a multifaceted company in the energy industry and should hold its value well.  They are more of a service company that will benefit from the rises in energy processes and not be hit so hard by decreases.

SYNM, which uses the same Fischer-Troupe process to convert ng to diesel, has gas drilling sites which make it suseptable to dry wells and weather.  They had a gangbuster day yesterday too!
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=SYNM&t=3m&l=on&z=m&q=l&c=

Another to look at is SCU - which just completed a cup - up 30% in the last month or so after a nasty dip.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=SCU&t=3m

they have been trading on the Vancouver SE as SME.v for years.

RTK uses the same method to convert ng to liquid fuel as SYNM.

This link confirms that SYNM will be on 60 Minutes on Sunday
