Running UP now !!!!!!

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 10 (Reuters) - The chief executive of AtheroGenics Inc. (AGIX.O: Quote, Profile , Research) on Wednesday talked up coming pivotal data on an experimental heart disease drug it is developing with AstraZeneca Plc (AZN.L: Quote, Profile , Research), while confirming that full results will be available no sooner than late in the current quarter.

CEO Russell Medford said the Phase III trial involves 6,000 patients who have had heart attack or unstable angina. The main goal is to show a reduction in the risk of cardiac events including death, heart attack, stroke, bypass surgery, angioplasty or hospitalization.

"The primary event rate appears lower than comparable studies," he said.

Medford said AtheroGenics was still working toward the goal of presenting the results at the American College of Cardiology Scientific Sessions in New Orleans in late March.

AstraZeneca agreed in December 2005 to pay AtheroGenics up to $1 billion for exclusive rights to the drug, known as AGI-1067, an anti-inflammatory product for reducing atherosclerosis, or the build-up of plaque inside arteries that can lead to heart attack and stroke.

AGI-1067 is viewed by industry analysts as a risky project with a high chance of failure.

Analysts believe the drug could potentially have peak sales of up to $5 billion a year, but lack of confidence that it will work means risk-adjusted sales forecasts are nearer $500 million to $1 billion.

AtheroGenics Plunges on Clinical Trial
Monday March 19, 4:01 pm ET
Drug Maker AtheroGenics Plummets on Disappointing Heart Disease Drug Results

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of drug maker AtheroGenics Inc. plunged to a new 52-week low after a heart drug the company is developing did not meet its goals in a clinical trial.

Alpharetta, Ga.-based AtheroGenics said that AGI-1067, which it is developing with AstraZeneca PLC, did not accomplish its main goal in a phase III trial. The company said the drug did reach some "secondary endpoints," including reducing events including heart attacks and stroke, and improving glycemic control in diabetes patients.

AtheroGenics said it plans to continue working on the drug. AstraZeneca has 45 days to decide if it wants to continue its partnership with Atherogenics.

Lazard Capital Markets analyst Joel Sendek downgraded the stock to "Hold" from "Buy" after the study results were released. He said AGI-1067 was critical to AtheroGenics' success, and the company will have trouble testing the drug again.

"If the company decides to embark on an additional clinical trial, the company may have to raise additional capital, which may be difficult given the company's net debt position," he said. "We expect AstraZeneca to exit the partnership; we remove all AGI-1067 sales from our model through 2009."

AtheroGenics stock dropped $4.74, or 60.5 percent, to closed at $3.09 on the Nasdaq Stock Market, with volume topping 14 times normal daily trade. Shares traded as low as $2.90, compared with their previous range between $7.23 and $16.76 in the past year.

American shares of London-based AstraZeneca closed down 2 cents to $55.48 on the New York Stock Exchange.

.... a much safer bet I believe for a medium term trader like me.
As I said on my previous post, it can also be use as a signal for "good earnings ahead" or some big news ahead.
