Earnings lift Knight Capital 10%

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Knight Capital shares rallied more than 10% Thursday after the company posted a fourth-quarter profit that was almost four times what analysts had expected.

NITE10.70, +1.06, +11.0%) reported income of $41.9 million, or 41 cents a share, compared with $108.4 million, or 84 cents a share, in the fourth quarter of 2004. The year-ago quarter included $86 million in income from discontinued operations.

Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected Knight to earn 11 cents a share, on average.

"A strong quarter pretty much any way you slice it," said Richard Repetto, an analyst at Sandler O'Neill, in a note to clients. He expected Knight to earn 12 cents a share.

He pointed to the company's equity-markets business and its investment in the Deephaven funds as drivers behind Knight's successful quarter.

"Of all the factors leading to the favorable results, our decision to dramatically boost automation in our broker-dealer operations mid-2005 had the greatest impact on profitability," said Thomas Joyce, chairman and CEO of Knight, in a statement.

Revenue improved to $201.3 million, compared with $185.6 million a year ago.

The equity-markets unit brought in $134.8 million of revenue, an increase of 6.5% from the fourth quarter of 2004. Operating earnings climbed to $23 million from $15.6 million a year ago.

Fees from asset management declined to $21.3 million, compared with $48.8 million a year ago. Earnings were $6.6 million, down from $22.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2004.

"We believe year-end redemptions drove a 10% decline in average assets under management to $3 billion," Repetto said.

The corporate segment reported a loss of $2.5 million. A year ago, it earned $258,000. The Deephaven funds helped temper the loss by contributing 3 cents a share to the corporate operation, Repetto noted. Without Deephaven, the segment would have lost 4 cents a share, he said.

Also Thursday, Knight reported a 10.3% decline in December average daily trades to 843,000 from 940,000 in December 2004. The average daily dollar value traded was $7.91 billion, which represents a 0.9% decline from $7.98 billion a year earlier. There was one less trading day in December 2005 than in December 2004.

Investors snap up Knight Capital shares
By David Weidner, MarketWatch
Last Update: 9:52 AM ET Apr 19, 2006

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Knight Capital Group Inc. rose as much as 20% in early trading Thursday, a rally touched off after the equity trade execution company announced better-than-expected first-quarter financial results.
Shares of Jersey City, N.J.-based Knight Capital (NITE : knight capital group inc cl a
Last: 17.16+2.78+19.33%

NITE17.16, +2.78, +19.3%) gained $2.71 to stand at $17.06, setting a 52-week high at $17.23 shortly after the opening bell.
Knight Capital said first-quarter net income jumped to $49.1 million, or 47 cents a share, from $5.8 million, in the year-earlier period. Revenue for the latest quarter more than doubled to $276.5 million from $137.6 million.
The company said its profit was after charges of 5 cents a share related to real estate costs.
Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had, on average, been expecting earnings of 30 cents a share on revenue of $194 million.
The company said the results were partly due to increased automation in its broker-dealer operations since mid-2005, combined with good market conditions in the quarter.
Knight Capital added its board of directors has approved a $150 million increase in its share-buyback program, to $495 million.
Separately, the company said average dollar value traded in March was $8.29 billion, up about 9% from a year ago but off 7.1% from February 2006.

Really a blow out revenue and earnings increase, Revenue double... ;)
At this rate they might do $1.88 or better for a year,
at a modest 20 times earnings it suggests a potential stock price in the $38.00 area.
