Market Pulse: Novavax: study shows avian flu vaccine effective

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Novavax Inc. on Thursday reported positive pre-clinical results for its vaccine for pandemic influenza. The Malvern, Pa.-based biopharmaceutical company said a study demonstrated that its novel virus-like particle flu vaccine is effective in protecting animals exposed to avian flu.

Isn't it dangerous and not too useful to buy after the news already made the stock soar to 55% pre-market and then pull back to 30% at the end of the day? Just curious on your opinion.

Novavax Shares Rise After Signing Collaboration With Wave Biotech to Make Vaccines on Commercial Scale


MALVERN, Pa. (AP) -- Shares of Novavax Inc. jumped Tuesday after the biopharmaceutical company said it would collaborate with Wave Biotech LLC to develop a way to produce the Virus-Like Particle avian flu vaccine on a commercial scale.

Novavax shares were up 14 cents, or 9.3 percent, to $1.65 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq after being up 22 percent earlier in the day. Shares traded at nearly four times their average volume.

So far, Novavax's VLP technology has only shown that it protects animals from avian flu. The VLP imitates a virus to elicit an immune response but cannot infect cells because it lacks the genetic material of a virus, unlike standard vaccines.

Following publication of the animal data, Novavax shares more than doubled in less than a week hitting a recent high of $2.56 Aug. 30. Company shares have fallen from a 52-week high of $4.10 in October and recently hit a 52-week low of 70 cents before rebounding. Shares are down 49 percent on the year so far.

Financial details of the collaboration were not disclosed.

i sold it on 2.52 on august 31.  .. Currently waiting for FNSR to do same thing...then probably will load with this.......I would appreciate if anyone can do a TA on this. ( Breakdown, rise points, volumes, patterns)  I think its also time to find another gap up stock to share with the community.......

Hmm something going on with NVAX here. A nice day today on average volume, I guess a reaction to all the bird flu news we have seen E.G UN Discussion on what can be done, and headlines such as 'Vietnam to Import 260m More Doses of Bird Flu Vaccine' Also look at the SVA thread for more related stories. Now with a close near HOD, then a jump in after hours from $1.66 to $1.75 on a few K shares. Might just be a blip but might also signal something cooking and ready to happen Tuesday. So lets see
Chart is shaping up some after hefty pullback from recent news inspired spike, NVAX looks like it may represent a nice longer term play on the bird flu story as well as right now a short term reversal of the pullback to support.
