Don't think of hurricane plays as ghoulish and exploitive -- you're just putting money where it's most needed.

Rita is starting up where katrina left off in dismantling our oil infrastructure. Here's two companies that specialize in rebuilding it:

Cal Dive - CDIS Houstin, TX
Chairman and CEO: Owen Kratz
Past: Last year this company, known for innovative ways of working in harsh deep-water environments, profited from financial innovation as well. The construction company has taken an ownership interest in some things it builds, such as the Marco Polo platform it put into production last summer. It owns 50 percent of the project, which it leases to the companies that use it to handle the output from nearby fields. Owning the platform gave it an edge when competing for the construction work.
Present: Its shares have continued to rise. Demand for construction work continues to increase, and the company is adding deep-water construction equipment such as super trenchers - robotic construction equipment capable of burying pipe under the sandy bottom in deep waters.
On its track record: "It was a record year for us, but what I like to point out is . . . we have steadily grown revenues 30 to 35 percent a year compounded over the last decade, and not many people in this industry can say that." - Wade Pursell, chief financial officer

Gulf Island Fabrication, Inc. - GIFI

engages in the fabrication and refurbishment of drilling and production platforms, and other specialized structures used in the development and production of offshore oil and gas reserves. The structures and equipment fabricated by the company include jackets and deck sections of fixed production platforms; hull and/or deck sections of floating production platforms, such as tension leg platforms, SPARs, and floating production storage and offloading vessels; piles; wellhead protectors; subsea templates; production, compressor, and utility modules; and offshore living quarters. It also provides offshore interconnect pipe hook-up, inshore marine construction, manufacture and repair of pressure vessels, and steel warehousing. The company principally operates in the offshore regions of the Gulf of Mexico. Its customers include oil and gas exploration and production companies. Gulf Island was co-founded by Alden J. Laborde and Huey J. Wilson in 1985. The company is headquartered in Houma, Louisiana.

The GIFI chart displays a long black candle that filled the two gaps from the previous two days. For what it's worth, my charting software identified this as a "Bullish Upside Gap Three Methods" pattern, highlighted in red.

If you must smite, post why so I can improve myself.

Here's the CDIS chart:

I picked up some PWR and GIFI today.

PWR (Quanta Services, Inc.) operates as a provider of specialty contracting services. It offers end-to-end network solutions to the electric power, gas, telecommunications, cable television, and specialty services industries in the United States. The company's services include designing, installing, repairing, and maintaining network infrastructure. It also offers ancillary services, such as inside electrical wiring, intelligent traffic networks, cable, and control systems for light rail lines, airports, and highways; and specialty rock trenching, directional boring, and road milling for industrial and commercial customers. The company was founded in 1997 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

GIFI (Gulf Island Fabrication, Inc.) engages in the fabrication and refurbishment of drilling and production platforms, and other specialized structures used in the development and production of offshore oil and gas reserves.

Also added TTES, another oil repair company located in Houston.  Very low float and not much volume today, but this one could come into play if, unfortunately, Rita follow her predicted course. Profile:

T-3 Energy Services, Inc. engages in the manufacture, remanufacture, and distribution of oilfield products and services to the oil and gas industry primarily in the Gulf Coast region and Canada. It operates through two segments, Pressure Control and Distribution. The Pressure Control segment manufactures, remanufactures, and repairs high pressure service products, including valves, chokes, actuators, blow out preventors, manifolds, and wellhead equipment; manufactures accumulators and rubber goods; and applies custom coatings to customers' products. This segment sells its products and services to companies engaged in the exploration, production, and pipeline transportation of oil and gas; companies in the petrochemical, chemical, and petroleum refining industries; and onshore and offshore contract drilling and well servicing companies. The Distribution segment distributes pipes, valves, stud bolts, gaskets, and other ancillary products. This segment sells its products primarily to the upstream and downstream oil and gas industry, offshore fabrication companies, and shipyards. The company distributes its products through a network of distribution centers along the Louisiana and Texas Gulf Coast. T-3 Energy Services is based in Houston, Texas.
