ViaCell Looks Healthier
Tuesday November 8, 2:52 pm ET
By Rich Smith

Stem cell researcher and cord blood harvester -- not exactly the most pleasant-sounding line of business, is it? ViaCell (Nasdaq: VIAC - News) reported earnings earlier this morning. Although the company failed to include a crucial bit of investor information with its earnings release, judging from the symptoms evident on its income statement and (abbreviated) balance sheet, it appears this patient will live.

As recently as yesterday, analysts weren't so sure. They were calling for the company to report a loss of $0.11 per diluted share on $11.7 million worth of revenues. As it turned out, the company did indeed report $11.7 million in sales (an 18% year-over-year increase), but its loss came in at just $0.09, considerably better than the prognosis.

Once again, the shining light of the company was not its super-sexy research arm, which aims to cure all manner of ills through the magic of stem cells. (That aim is mirrored by competitors such as Aastrom (Nasdaq: ASTM - News), Geron (Nasdaq: GERN - News) and, lest we forget, StemCells, Inc. (Nasdaq: STEM - News).) Instead, the pearl within ViaCell's oyster shell remains its cord blood collection and cold storage unit, the high-tech equivalent of a cold storage warehouse.

The third quarter saw that one segment increase by 21% year over year -- in marked contrast to the aforementioned super-sexy business, which saw its revenues decline by 65%. Year to date, the song remains the same. The first nine months of 2005 saw the storage unit grow 19% over the year-ago period, while research revenue declined by 60%.

Fortunately for the company, its costs aren't growing so quickly. Year-to-date operating costs barely budged from their positions last year. Despite the considerable boost in revenues, the company spent just 2.5% to keep itself in business.

Speaking of revenues, though, one point of concern does pop out on the company's abridged balance sheet, where we see that accounts receivable have grown by 40% over the past year, to $15.1 million. ViaCell is in the unenviable position of seeing well over a quarter's worth of revenues sitting in its uncollected-bills drawer. That's a marked contrast to the 45% decline in its accounts payable, which suggests to this Fool that ViaCell is incapable of demanding prompt payment from those who owe it money. Meanwhile, ViaCell's creditors are demanding that their bills be paid on time and in full, and ViaCell doesn't seem able to put them off.

Hopefully, as the company grows and succeeds, we'll see a reversal of both those trends in quarters to come.

Fool contributor Rich Smith has no position, short or long, in any company mentioned in this article.

Did you take that off of my watch list?... If so, thanks for the vote of confidence  :D.  If not... looks like we were thinking the same thing.  Applause for doing the dirty work.  I'll add a little bit of my own if you don't mind... it's kind of a combination of your two charts  :).

Update on VIAC... good day today... solid gain and another good looking candle to break out a little bit... should see the 50 dma tomorrow.  I'd definitely put in money if I had some but make sure to do your own DD!... Just released good earnings and better than expected product growth so has a base for a little bit of a breakout on top of the volume and positive MACD:

ViaCell Announces Third Quarter 2005 Financial Results
Tuesday November 8, 7:30 am ET
-- ViaCord Sales Grow 21% --

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ViaCell, Inc. (Nasdaq: VIAC - News) today announced its consolidated financial results for the third quarter of 2005. Financial highlights for the third quarter include:

    * Revenue totaled $11.7 million, an increase of 18% over revenue of $9.9
      million in the third quarter of 2004;
    * Processing and storage revenues for ViaCord were $11.6 million, an
      increase of 21% over the third quarter of 2004;
    * Net loss decreased to $3.6 million, or $0.09 per share, as compared to a
net loss of $9.5 million, or $3.49 per share, in the third quarter of
      2004; and
    * Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments totaled $61.5 million
      at September 30, 2005.

"We are pleased with the continued revenue growth of ViaCord," stated Marc D. Beer, President and Chief Executive Officer of ViaCell. "We have also demonstrated our ability to control expenses in 2005."

Total revenues for the third quarter of 2005 were $11.7 million, an increase of $1.8 million, or 18%, over total revenues of $9.9 million for the same period in 2004. Processing and storage fees of ViaCord®, ViaCell's product for the preservation and storage of umbilical cord blood, for the third quarter of 2005 were approximately $11.6 million, an increase of 21% over $9.6 million in the third quarter of 2004. Grant and contract revenues for the third quarter of 2005 were $135,000 versus $386,000 for the same period in 2004. The decrease in grant and contract revenues is due to the closing of ViaCell's German facility in December 2004.

The gross margin for ViaCord was approximately 81.3% in the third quarter of 2005 compared to 80.7% in third quarter of 2004.

Research and development expenses for the third quarter of 2005 were $3.3 million, a decrease of 14% compared to research and development expenses of $3.8 million for the third quarter of 2004. Research and development expenses consist primarily of costs associated with the clinical development of CB001, ViaCell's investigational cord blood stem cell product for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients affected by a variety of cancers. The decrease in research and development expenses in the third quarter of 2005, as compared to the same period in 2004, was due primarily to the Company's restructuring in 2004 which reduced costs and focused the scope of its research and development initiatives.

Sales and marketing expenses for the third quarter of 2005 were $6.3 million, an increase of $1.6 million or 35%, compared to sales and marketing expenses of $4.7 million in the third quarter of 2004. The increase in sales and marketing expenses was primarily due to higher spending within ViaCell's Reproductive Health business, including increased staffing within the sales organization as well as external marketing program spending for ViaCord.

General and administrative expenses were approximately $2.8 million for the third quarter of 2005, slightly lower than general and administrative expenses in the third quarter of 2004 of $3.0 million.

Net loss per common share for the third quarter of 2005 was $0.09 compared to a net loss per common share of $3.49 and pro forma net loss per common share of $0.22 in the corresponding quarter of 2004. Net loss for the third quarter of 2005 of $3.6 million compared to a net loss of $9.5 million and a pro forma net loss of $6.1 million for the corresponding period in 2004. A reconciliation of GAAP basic and diluted net loss per share to pro forma basic and diluted net loss per share is included in the Company's unaudited consolidated statements of operations, which is described below in the financial tables.

As of September 30, 2005, ViaCell had approximately $61.5 million in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments.

Might try to free up something in my account to get in on this one.  Could see $7.50 pretty soon.

No problem... got something else.  This could be taken as positive or negative news.  Once this thing breaks the 50 dma it will fill the gap to 6.50 where it could meet some resistance.  More resistance at 7 but if it breaks through both of those (neither is very strong) we could see a run up to 10.50 or 11.  We just got to watch and see.

dwest718

Higher volume on gap this morning and price movement higher so far today.  VIAC just keeps on chuggin.  Still could see the 50 dma sometime today.  Keep an eye on a break through.  I'll put up updated TA and charts tonight when I have some time.

dwest718

Great chart today... this thing should see $7.00 by Tuesday.  Continued up trend on high volume and broke the 50 dma.  Check it out.  This is one good lookin chart!

dwest718

Does anybody have anything to say about this one?  Anyone think it will get to 10.50 or 11.00 again?

dwest718

If this thing can break resistance on Monday it's still got 20% more in it.  I'll definitely be watching.  Some updated week end charts for anyone who's interested:

dwest718

And it continues to run up!  Check out the news... and then could someone post the chart?  I'm having some technical difficulties today.
