I want to go to upstate New York

In that case, I would recommend visiting in the fall.  The changing of the color of the leaves is spectacular throughout NY state but especially beautiful when you go upstate.  The weather is usually nicer then also.  Springtime tends to be cool and rainy and summers are hot and humid.  September or October timeframe is when some of the harvest activities and celebrations also happen - orchards and farms are open for fresh fruit and veggie picking, the wine country has wine fests.  And the weather has cooled somewhat and dried out.  Any later than October and the leaves have all fallen and snow or rain usually comes.  So mid-September to mid-October is when I would suggest visiting.  Good luck!
