Amkor Technology Posts Fourth-Quarter Profit of $54 Million As Sales Surge 42 Percent

CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) -- Amkor Technology Inc., a maker of semiconductor packaging, on Wednesday said it swung to a fourth-quarter profit, as sales surged 42 percent.
Shares of Amkor surged after-hours by $1.13, or about 20 percent, to $6.89. They closed the regular Nasdaq session down 11 cents, or about 2 percent, to $5.76.

Net income was $54 million, or 30 cents per share, reversing a year-earlier loss of $36.1 million, or 21 cents per share.

Results in the latest quarter included a tax benefit of $9.9 million, a gain of $4.4 million on a unit sale, and restructuring costs of $3.3 million, Amkor said.

Revenue was $643.5 million up from $453.3 million in the year-earlier quarter.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial were looking for per-share profit of 12 cents per share on sales of $624.8 million.

"Our fourth-quarter results reflect solid unit growth in strategic product areas, a richer product mix, a firmer pricing environment, and enhanced operating leverage in our newer factories," said Chairman and Chief Executive James Kim.

Amkor's losses totaled $136.9 million, or 78 cents per share, in 2005, compared with a loss of $37.5 million, or 21 cents per share, in 2004. Revenue rose to $2.1 billion from $1.9 billion.

For the first quarter, Amkor expects revenue to decline 3 percent to 5 percent from the fourth quarter -- which would suggest a range of $611.3 million to $624.2 million -- with net income of 10 cents to 14 cents per share. Analysts are projecting a loss for the period of a penny per share on revenue of $583.5 million.

Amkor Reports Record First Quarter Sales

CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 2006--Amkor Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMKR) reported record first quarter 2006 sales of $645 million, up 55% from the first quarter of 2005 and up slightly from the fourth quarter of 2005. Amkor's first quarter 2006 net income was $36 million, or $0.20 per diluted share. For the first quarter of 2005 Amkor's net loss was $119 million, or ($0.68) per share, and included a provision for legal settlements of $50 million, or ($0.28) per share.

"I am pleased with our results this quarter and believe that the firm business conditions in Q1 have created a platform for Amkor to achieve measured, profitable growth in 2006," said James Kim, Amkor's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "We expect that tight supply throughout the semiconductor industry, coupled with what we see as more disciplined behavior toward capacity expansion, will restrain upside production and dampen the amplitude of industry cyclicality. We believe a less volatile business environment will better enable Amkor to enrich our product mix, improve asset productivity, and increase profitability and cash flow."

"During the first quarter we saw seasonally robust demand across a broad range of end markets, with upsides for advanced packages, such as MicroLeadFrame(R), System-in-Package and 3D packages for wireless communications and consumer applications," said Kim. "Our strategic alliance with IBM continues to develop very well."

"In February we announced a strategic expansion of our electroplated wafer bumping operations in collaboration with Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing and other customers who operate in Singapore," said Kim. "This initiative recognizes the increased adoption of flip chip packaging and the leadership position in wafer bumping technology we have gained through our Unitive subsidiary. In conjunction with our existing test operations in Singapore, Amkor will provide turnkey wafer bump and wafer probe services for leading edge applications on 300mm wafers at advanced process nodes. We believe there is strong market demand for our advanced bump and probe capabilities, and expect our wafer bumping production build-out to be largely supported by long-term supply agreements."

"First quarter sales of $645 million and gross margin of 24% exceeded our guidance as customer demand remained firm during what is typically a seasonally slow period," said Ken Joyce, Amkor's Chief Financial Officer. "We are benefiting from a focused effort on optimizing our asset allocation, improving labor and asset productivity, disciplined capacity expansion and enriching our product mix."

"First quarter gross profit includes a $4 million impairment charge primarily related to our decision to close down a camera module production line in Korea, where we have not achieved targeted returns and associated cash flows," said Joyce.

"First quarter SG&A expenses were higher than previously planned, principally attributable to greater than anticipated professional fees and increased IT-related expenses," said Joyce. "In light of stronger business conditions, we have decided to invest a portion of our increased earnings to enhance our worldwide IT systems capabilities. We are moving forward with a broad-based ERP implementation designed to ensure that Amkor has the systems infrastructure necessary to accommodate planned growth while managing an increasingly complex supply chain."

Another one that's been down for several months.  Looks like it has reached a turning point.  I will look for a bounce off a huge resistance level it has just hammered off of on above average volume.  Going against my usual MACD tells but the RSI looks solid enough to warrant a hard look if there is some bounce here from the 6.75 level.  A few positive days and a close around or above 7.25 by Thursday would warrant a very solid look and a good pick.  I will post a chart and more analysis and targets on Sunday and then follow this thing Monday and Tuesday to determine a course of action.  Very good, strong support at 6 so if this thing continues to fall, could be a great buy point there.

Coming tomorrow night, 6 month and 18 month daily charts with analysis.  Hope y'all can wait until then  ;D

Amkor Receives Nasdaq Delisting Notice Regarding Delayed Filing of Form 10-Q and Notices of Default on Debt
Tuesday August 15, 1:51 am ET

CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 2006--Amkor Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:AMKR - News) today announced that it has received a Nasdaq Staff Determination notice stating that the company is not in compliance with Nasdaq Marketplace Rule 4310(c)(14) because it has not timely filed its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q for the period ended June 30, 2006. The Nasdaq Staff Determination notice indicated that Amkor's securities will be delisted from the Nasdaq Stock Market unless Amkor requests a hearing before a Nasdaq Listing Qualifications Panel. Accordingly, Amkor will request a hearing to review the Nasdaq Staff Determination, and pending a decision by the hearing panel, Amkor's common stock will remain listed on The Nasdaq National Market. However, there can be no assurance that the hearing panel will grant the company's request for continued listing.
In addition, the Company has received letters from U.S. Bank National Association as trustee and Wells Fargo Bank, National Association as trustee alleging that the failure of Amkor to file its Quarterly Report constitutes a default under the indentures governing each of the following series of notes:

5% Convertible Subordinated Notes due 2007
10.5% Senior Subordinated Notes due 2009
9.25% Senior Notes due 2008
9.25% Senior Notes due 2016
6.25% Convertible Subordinated Notes Due 2013
7.75% Senior Notes due 2013
7 1/8% Senior Notes due 2011
2.5% Convertible Senior Subordinated Notes due 2011
The letters also allege that the failure by Amkor to cure the purported default within 60 days from the date of notice will result in the occurrence of an "Event of Default" under the indentures.

If an "Event of Default" were to occur under the indentures governing the notes described above, the trustee or holders of at least 25% in aggregate principal amount of such series of notes then outstanding could attempt to declare all related unpaid principal and premium, if any, and accrued interest on such series of notes then outstanding to be immediately due and payable. As of the date hereof, there is approximately $1.62 billion of aggregate unpaid principal outstanding of the above mentioned notes.

On July 26, 2006, Amkor announced that its board of directors has established a special committee of independent directors to review the company's historical stock option practices. The special committee is being assisted by independent legal counsel. Amkor is focusing significant effort on completing its options review in order to file its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q on or before October 9, 2006 and thereby avoid any purported Event of Default.

Amkor Tech says 2 banks notify of potential default on notes

AMKR The Chandler, Ariz., provider of semiconductor-assembly and -test services, said it was notified by Nasdaq that its stock could be delisted. That's because it did not file its quarterly report on Securities and Exchange Commission Form 10-Q for the period ended June 30 on time. Amkor will request a hearing on the matter, and meantime its stock will continue to trade on the National Market, Amkor said. Amkor also said that U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo Bank notified the company that the failure to file the 10-Q constitutes a default under several series of notes totaling $1.62 billion. Amkor said it is currently reviewing its stock-option practices and hopes to complete that review and file its 10-Q by Oct. 9 to avoid an event of default under the notes. An event of default could entitle the holders to declare the notes due and payable, Amkor said.
