How to properly use the search feature

Seems like a lot of people are having some confusion with the search feature and are not getting the results they ask for when they search and find it not very user friendly. I've never had a problem with the search feature so i'll fill you all in on some tips and tricks on how to search and get the results your looking for.

The Steps to Search:

1st: you need to use the search box that lies under your user info at the top of the message board. The search at the bottom of the page is powered by googles search engine which is good  for searching the entire internet, but not to search for a thread on 3sof.

2nd: Where to start your search from..........

for the most broad search of your topic you start from the initial message board screen that displays all the threads. This will search the entire message board for results on that topic. If you want to be more specific like lets say, Find the 10 GIGM threads that were on the "stock picking board"  :D. You would enter into the "stock picking" board and enter your search from that screen which will then only search your topic in the threads within the stock picking board.

When i enter GIGM into the search box on the main page of the message board we come up with the exact threads were looking for.

Elite G's thread on the stock picking board
Davids thread in stocks on fire(premium)
Davids gigm for the long term. Previous 3sof picks

Easy as that! Now lets all learn to use this feature to avoid mulitple threads on stocks. Its understandable for newbies to do it cause there just anxious to see what people have to say about a stock and don't even think to search to see if there is already a thread, i know i was once of of them. So lets start talking stocks in an orderly manner :)

Thanks Fous. Find all these threads horrible too. It's so easy.

Thanks also to Setravis who brought it to the attention too.

Hey Fous,
This is good but the problem people are talking about is a little different. For example let's look for EXTR.It gives you results with even the word extreme in the message. All you wanted was to see a post about Extreme network.

Thats something that Rams can change from within the admin console so that it matches whole words only. This way when you search for a ticker such as EXTR, it won't come up with a bunch of results for "EXTRemely cool!" and just results for "EXTR" by itself.

I just tested this on my system and it filters a little better but not a huge significant difference. But in some cases you want to find those words within words, For instance searching for an .ob stock will still come up if you type in TNEN and not TNEN.OB which it is listed as.

Ok i lied i think it works a lot better.
for example with whole words on:
search for AAG and nothing comes up, but with whole words off it will come up with a bunch of stuff for AAGH.ob which we don't want happening such as the case with EXTR and the word ETREmley

I realize the .ob still finds itself with whole words on because it is separated by a period which is a good thing in the case of searching for otcbb stocks and you can just type in BRVO and not BRVO.OB and still get the same results

I would suggest to change your search feature to whole words only rams ;) works a lot better and filters the rubbish.

yeah multiple threads are a pain, i try to search, New folks get excited and post randomly,  perhaps Ramsberg should just auto delete all new topics from a poster with a rating less than 10 or something

my 2 cents

I have a suggestion that also might help the multiple thread issue, though it might require coding for Ramsburg.

The idea would be to have an additional field that must be filled out when a user goes to post that requires the stock ticker to be entered separately.  Then, going forward a database query can be run against each post and inform the poster that there is already a thread open for that stock, shows them the link, and asks if they really want to start a new thread.  At least that way people wouldnt have the excuse of saying they didnt know there was already a thread.

Some issues might arise when stock tickers are changed, etc. so I am not sure how vialble this might be, just throwing it out there.

Very simple, "Don't create new threads when a thread exist !  >:D
Members, Don't you get it ?  ???  If a thread is old and there has not been any posting on it of late,
If you run an update to it, "The thread is alive again" !   ;)
Without the unnecessary creating of new threads...   "Board clutter" !  >:D

Setravis,
I totally agree with you. It is very frustrating to see multiple threads with  all valuable research scattered in different places.
I pointed out the same on a newly created thread for ERS and guess what ..... that dude  gives me a smite ???

Since we've recently upgraded the Message Board to a new version, I was finally ready to setup the «Match whole words only» option on the search Engine method.

I think this will solve a lot of searching issues, especially with tickers that are part of words.

How do we search for the topic we are interested in that has the most recent post?
In the case of GNBT,
Relevance 79.1% had a post on January13, 2007 by Livelife. ( Bought GNBT right now Started by therman on June 16, 2005)
Relevance 71.1% had a post on January 15, 2007 by Melf Elf. (Catching the Knife: started by Ramsburg on April 5, 2006)
At first I thought that the post with the higher relevance would have the more recent post.
I'm just wondering what would be the most efficient way of being up to date with the stocks we're following using the search features.
Go in with upside momentum or wait for stock to tank and buy close to support.
