Basin Water Gets Nitrate Removal Pact

Basin Water Gets Pact for Nitrate Removal System in Pomona, Calif.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (AP) -- Basin Water Inc. said Wednesday it received a contract for a system to remove nitrates from drinking water in a second well in Pomona, Calif.

Terms were not disclosed.

The company said its ion-exchange system will treat more than 1 million gallons daily. By removing nitrates from groundwater, Basin Water said the city will save almost 40 percent on its water costs.

Because the 23 square-mile city was once largely agricultural, much of the groundwater has been contaminated by nitrates in fertilizer, the company said.

This is the company's second system in Ponoma, which is located in Los Angeles County. Basin Water operates more than 50 installations nationwide.

Shares of Basin Water jumped $1.03, or 10.1 percent, to $11.26.
