Title: Session of 01/26/2007
Post by: David Randolph on January 26, 2007, 09:26:41 AM
Good morning :)

As you know, from the Trades (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=8769.0) thread or the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio page (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/3stocksonfire_3sof.php), now I'm holding TRMM, OFI and FUEL.

I'm quite pleased with these 3 holdings so I'm not planning to sell them for now. Therefore the Portfolio is fully invested.

Anyway, I welcome any suggestion or analysis request you may have, because I want to know about more stocks, and we never know if a truly bullish small cap momentum stock won't show up.

If you've been following this board you have been seeing how I mix technical and fundamental information to select stocks. I believe this gives me a little extra points when compared to the pure guts and glory technical player.

We'll see, that debate is still open.

Place your suggestions or thoughts on stocks or stock selection strategies, the market is OPEN !

CNLG I covered when it was above $4:

CNLG is on fire but maybe a little too hot now >:D

Gee, this isn't the first time CNLG makes one of these ! Unfortunately the last time it all ended in tears for late buyers.

I see it is just a $7.65 M market cap company, hence its ability to run so high in such a short period of time. I see their balance sheet looks healthy, with $2.5 M in cash and just $140 K in short term debt, so I don't fear short term dilution.

Revenues so far in 2006 are just $420 K, so kind of incipient, but at least they're not losing millions, just a ($710 K) in Q3.

Let's check the news that made it run the last time and today's news, to see if they are relevant enough:

For the first spike, there was nothing out, just the speculator's and day traders fever:

«Shares of Conolog Corp., which makes equipment for communications devices, nearly tripled on unusually heavy volume with no apparent news. The company didn't issue any comment or file documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission, and no analysts cover the company.

Nonetheless, the stock grew to $3.67 from Friday's close of $1.31. By noon, investors had traded almost 1.9 million shares, versus daily trading average of 20,000 shares.»

And today we have the following:

• Conolog Announces Final Approval for its CM-100 DIRECT SUBSTATION System; Deliveries Scheduled for Third Quarter (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/070124/clw041.html?.v=70)
PR Newswire (Wed 10:42am)

The press release has no details or dollar estimates. I'm afraid people that were stuck with this stock on the previous spike will provide some resistance to the advance. There's no fundamental substance, at least not enough, the way I see it, to make it run much higher, and the risk of falling back down is relevant.

Anyway, good luck tokyopua and all the fast runners holding it :)»

At $3.10 now ... Yes, perhaps it can run now that some more people holding from the last spike are out of the way, very low market cap, good luck :)

There's an excellent thread on EGHT on the 3 SOF Previous Picks board:

EGHT on the move (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=7252.0)

I love that stock's business model and sector (VOIP), also the historical revenue growth. I used to hold it but unfortunately sold (for a loss), due to risk management rules. But I was stupid, I should have held it longer, great stock.

Good luck !

MENV.OB 3 minute look:

http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-3541770965343788786&hl=en

There's strong resistance just above the current share price and fundamentally it looks weak.

3 minute look on WFR:

http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=6010064096164985144&hl=en

Yes, it looks strong, but facing some long term resistance between $48 and $55. Already a $10 B plus market cap, so not what we're looking for here for a fast trade, because, you see, for this stock to gain 50% it needs to create a $5 B value.

For a $10 M market cap company to make the same share price advance it only needs to create (or create the perception) of $5 M more value. Much easier.

Thanks for the ASIA short! You should have held longer ;)

What do you think of shorting HOKU? Chart looks similar to ASIA but bigger gap that needs to be closed and greater downside. Moving averages dont show support until $3.95. Thanks Dave

MWIS.OB 3 minute look:

http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-5062009513515312685&hl=en

A lot of hype due to the deal with The Sun from England, but they already had a similar deal with the Times and only generated $499 K in revenues over the 3th quarter, so I don't think the news can support the current $34 M market cap for long.

Anyway, awesome trade for boatguy, good luck :)

No way. HOKU is fundamentally strong. In fact I'm looking to buy it on a further dip to around $4 - $4.40. You can check my analysis on it on previous day's threads.

ASIA? Yes, I was right on that short, but it was a good move to buy to cover because I used the money to buy FUEL where I'm 13% ahead ;)

Hi lancefur :)

We need to create an archive for all analysis posted, because I already covered CVDT.OB, and frankly, I really dislike that stock. Look here:

«3 minute look on CVDT.OB:

http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-335896008177680714&hl=en

The chart looks nice, but this is one of the most overvalued stocks I've ever seen, with about $220 M market cap and no relevant revenues. This is a former mining company wanna be, now into VOIP, I don't like that.

I would buy EGHT instead, much lower market cap and also a VOIP play, and real revenues to show. I see just hype on CVDT.OB, and dilution will follow, I guess.»

Sold FUEL @ $1.66. I could have sold much better, as the stock went as high as $1.85 today, but I was a bit distracted and complacent. Anyway, 6.4% profit and free capital to buy another.

Thanks for the suggestion nygal321 :)

I covered EVCC.OB yesterday, look here:

«Hi supergeek, your mom is a wizard :)

The next time you or anybody else ask for an OTCBB stock, please mention the OB, it will be easier for me to find it on my Metastock database. Thanks.

EVCC.OB 3 minute look:

http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-871625075379463208&hl=en

Stock looks full of air with $100 M plus market cap and no revenues. It doesn't matter how good the idea or concept is.»

Still running high but I think it can collapse any minute. Anyway, I just took a 3 minute look, perhaps there's value there that I don't see, good luck !
Title: Re: The market is OPEN
Post by: David Randolph on January 26, 2007, 11:27:10 AM
Look at the collapse EXCS.OB is having before yesterday's huge run up (intraday) based on a misleading press release. It pays to make a quick fundamental assessment of the stock, faster than other guys.

I see it going back down to where it came from, 2 cents or so, because when a company misleads investors this way it only means one thing: it needs money, so it will dilute shareholder's value all the way down to the base. It happens with most penny stocks, so timing is everything.

Argh, I acutally bought FUEL right when you sold it lol  ???
Looking to buy back OFI on the gap fill though if it happens .

I have been looking all morning and the closest thing I could find that was somewhat ntersting was NMXC.OB, but its liquidity isnt great and about to run into resistance.  Its volume is good relative to its average, but I dont see good news for why its up 50%...  I will keep looking...
Title: Re: The market is OPEN
Post by: David Randolph on January 26, 2007, 11:37:37 AM
NAWL.OB is another example as I've warned on yesterday's thread. It's not just about what a man can make, it's also about what he can save !

Fundamental analysis can also prevent a trader like me from making some great and fast profit on an insane penny stock on a super sexy press release (because I try to see just a bit beneath the press release). But it also reduces risk a lot.

Anyway, enough of talking, let's get this thing moving, I have 33% of free capital to put to work !

Thanks for your participation !

I like FUEL. Perhaps I was precipitated when I sold, but I really don't want to or like to let a profit turn into a loss on the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio. I didn't like to see it coming down from $1.85 to breaking $1.70, so I run for the exit door without much thinking.

There's a gap opened between $1.90 and $2, I think with some patience it might have a change to go fill that gap, good luck :)

Yes, I really like OFI, I hope it closes the cap so everyone can enter the stock without that short term fear of buying at a short term high.

NMXC.OB? Let me take a look, thanks :)

David, can you look at VSGN   Stock got murdered last summer when FDA said some chimp in their trials they were running didn't look too good...very minor quibble, but it tanked the stock. Their science is great and a lot of leading medical types have been high on this company for several years. They are waiting for the FDA to let them up dosages in trials and stock should jump when that happens.  I'm holding a large position.

I think it is right, I sold short at $8.37, bought to cover at $8.35, so, 0.24% profit, right?

Anyway, the total return doesn't count with the percentage changes but with the actual $ changes.

ASIA at $7.88 now ... I was right, but almost didn't make any money on it.

Already $295 M market cap company, losing money, but assets seem to justify the current valuation, at least considering the way they're valued on the balance sheet.

Not on fire today. I don't consider it overvalued or cheap. I'm neutral.

Good luck on IVAN  :)

NMXC.OB is trading just about $100 K today, it's not worth the effort. In fact I think I'm going to add a new rule to FAQ, "No stocks with less than $500,000 volume traded allowed", what do you think Tokyo and others?

One problem with this rule is if one catches an attractive stock early in the day.  Like yesterday and OFI.  I would say people should be prudent with their stock requests.

I think that is an excellent rule David!  The only problem is, will people take the time to figure up the dollar amount of trades before submitting it to you for review?  Also another idea, could Ramsburg create a list that is visible on the screen that lists all the stocks you have covered and the date you covered it beside the stock symbol so that you will save time.  This way before anyone posts a stock for your review, they can check the list to see if it has already been posted.  This will save you time and headache!  Just trying to make your job easier! Keep up the excellent work, at this rate, I believe the 3 stocks on fire will surpass your main portfolio by years end!

Yes kslifka, OFI was your suggestion, right? Let me increase your rating 3 points for that :)

But, OFI with 150,000 shares or so was already above $500,000, and when you mentioned it was already way above 150 K traded, right?

Got your point, though.

3 minute look for ZANE.OB:

http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-2764748414666445765&hl=en

This one is hard to value. Don't like the chart at all. There will be dilution, because balance sheet shows negative working capital.

But fundamental value can be much superior ... we're talking about a $45 B program through 5 years, so $9 B a year. But divided by how many companies? What's ZANE's share? Hard to know. If you have the time, dig it, thank you !
Title: Re: The market is OPEN

Ok, found this for ZANE:

DHS Eagle contracts go to 25 companies (http://www.fcw.com/article95100-06-29-06-Web)

These 25 are the big boys getting most of the pie. ZANE is just a small player in this:

«The 25 companies selected were for what DHS refers to as the "unrestricted track" bidders, which are larger companies. DHS officials have said that there will be a significant small business presence for the EAGLE program.»

Don't like ZANE here with $70 M market cap. Can be wrong though. Good luck :)

Yes, of course, that would not be possible with a bigger size portfolio like the Main. And as it went up, it can go down, I guess. But I'm finding this experience of trading with just $15,000 and just 3 stocks a great reward, because what I would like to prove is that it is possible for a small guy (in trading account size, of course) to get to a medium size and then to a huge size. I guess the techniques must change and evolve with size.

The debate is open, lets see what we can do ;)

your opinion for COLM.  Great vol.!

COLM is a $2.1 B market cap company. I guess I'm going to put another rule on FAQ: "Just below $500 M market cap wanted".

Because to move fast, stocks need to be small. It's hard for a billion dollar or more company to make a big short term move.

I would cover it if I had more time now, but since it is Friday and there's only two hours left in the session, I'll start eliminating stocks that don't perfectly match my technical/fundamental filter.

Thanks for the suggestion, though :)

If you've been following this board you have been seeing how I mix technical and fundamental information to select stocks. I believe this gives me a little extra points when compared to the pure guts and glory technical player.

We'll see, that debate is still open.

You are the Captain here the David, portfolio is up almost 40% in just a matter of days.... ;)  applause ;)

True, nice work but very difficult to follow for people who aren't online the whole day and completely new to what 3SOF was in the past, I thought the portfolio would be for some short term trading but this is very very short term, almost daytrading... ::)

However, keep up the good work!

David! What do you think about SMD?

I don't know anything about it, but going down 14% today with just about $200,000 changing hands, so definitely not on fire.

Two hours to go, bring me fire (http://mdteague.com/FlaminDevil)

Of the 9 trades made so far (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/3stocksonfire_3sof.php) (considering the two still open), only 1 was a day trade. The objective is not to follow, is to understand the method.

Because if I can do it once (that is, to turn a small trading size account into a medium size account), I'll be able to do it whenever I want, provided the strategy is sound.

If you think this is fast trading you should see me day trading the DAX futures .. . in comparison this is mom and pop trading ;D

Thanks ;)

David,

I thought this portfolio is a shorter term trades than Main portfolio.  It's almost like daytrading now.  I am not new to 3SOF, but it's very hard for me to follow you  picks.  I press reload button often (almost every other minute) since this portfolio started, but I still miss you picks or the stock is too high already.

I only have about 8% profit so far.  How to better follow your picks?

Thanks for the great picks.

PGMI.OB - volume is 400k so far, it is kind of on fire :)

Pachinko machines are a legal gamling format in Japan. very popular there. growth is certain. PGMI operates 14 stores and opening new ones. only 8m market cap. rev is 5m last Q. EPS is negative because of depreciations.

One thing I am not certain of is it has a lot of convertible shares. so the market cap is not really 8m. more like 30-40m. still represents good value IMO.

No, this Portfolio is different from the Main (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/3stocksonfire.php). The 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/3stocksonfire_3sof.php) can hardly be called a portfolio, it's just 3 stocks.

I created this portfolio and new service because of the raging debate on the Premium area about the short term/long term perspective. Many complained that they couldn't spread their capital through 15 different holdings. Others complained because 30% average annual profit was not good enough for them, because they had little capital to start with.

So, I said, "I'm going to show you what I would do if I had just $15,000 to trade". And that's what I'm doing. My goal is to to show you how to turn a $15,000 trading account into a $150,000 trading account, and then you'll be able to diversify your investments and 30% average annual profit will make you very wealthy in 20 years.

But I know it is hard to mimic these trades, what you need to do is to see how I select and trade stocks so you can do it in a similar way for yourself.

Anyway, let me talk to Ramsburg for a minute about setting up e-mail alerts for this, but I warn you, it will be hard to mimic my trading, because the stocks are small and not much liquid and I need to move fast to make some meaningful profits with this small portfolio.

Will come back to this, thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, that's the best thing to do. I put the trades on the Trades (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=8769.0) thread before anywhere else.

Moreover, you need to consider the time it takes to prepare and send an e-mail to many people. When the mail gets to you, it can be late.

I think the current format is fine, and as you stated part of this is the learning experience.  I for one have had a whole new horizon expanded before me about what might be possible in trading,  this has been an incredibly interesting experience in just one week!  :) :D ;D :o >:D

I doubt this can be done in code, and there would still be a delay due to normal refresh rate, but maybe the website can be made to send an audible alert whenever a post is made to the trades thread, that is the only thing I can think of that might help those having a hard time keeping up...  Anyway, for my part very happy with things how they are now, keep up the great work!

TRMM is disappointing a bit today, because it wasn't able to surpass Wednesday's  close of $3.32. There's a small short term resistance there. However there's also short term support around the $3 level.

The fundamental case tells me it should go above $6, so I'll give it some more days. Because, if after taking out some weak hands, it is able to close above $3.32, I see it jumping to $5 in a jiffy.

Hi Toky,
Thanks for the suggestion.... I'm not quite sure yet if I can set some php code to trigger a sound alert for each new entry on the 'Trades' thread.... But probably it's doable, I will look into it during the weekend.

Now, what is already possible to do ? Users can set a notification email on the «Trades» Thread, just go there and click the 'Notify' button near the reply option, this will send an email notification each time there is a new reply (trade) on that post. I will put this inside the FAQ too ;)

regards !

CFC is another, up 10% as we speak, I hope you covered yesterday.

WFR is up just 4.5% since when it was mentioned here. But of course, sometimes a big cap can make a 50% short term move, but that's rare and hard. Much easier with small/micro cap stocks.

Cool, very hard to make money shorting stocks. Not the best course of action, if you ask me.

CFC is up because of something related to a notes offering ... don't catch it very well, but it could be up for anything, severely undervalued :)

Ramsburg did the following for you on the FAQ section:

«23 - But can I get email notifications with the new trades from the 3Stocks Portfolio ?
Yes you can, you should use a message board feature called 'Notify'.
Instructions: Go to the Trades (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=8769.0) Thread, click on the 'Notify' option (next to the Reply option). For better use, you should also click on your 'Profile', then click in 'Notifications and Email' and:
- Check the 'Receive forum announcements and important notifications by email' option
- Uncheck the 'Receive reply notification only for the first unread reply' option
- Check the 'When sending notification of a reply to a topic, send the post in the email' option
Click 'Save Settings'
NOTE: Make sure you check your Spam / Bulk / Junk email folder, if our emails are getting there, mark our email as not spam, and add our email address to your contact list.»

I think you entered without the information needed to be in a stock with somewhat strong hands. I see you taking steps in what I think is the right direction, but I wouldn't go to too much short term and just momentum driven trading. That can drive a man insane and not give him much profits.

The man writing this, once in his lifetime, made 30 to 40 trades in a normal trading day. He regrets that time. Did not learn anything and didn't make any meaningful money (at least he did not keep it for long).

I think the way to go is to look for technical and fundamental disequilibriums combined. Not easy, but the way to go ... for example, news out, what's the impact of that news? Stocks move initially and most players don't know what they're doing, and in that time, someone with the fundamental background is making calculus and estimates. That someone will be one of the first to assess the significance of the impact of the news on the fundamentals and make a more secure trade, because he knows what he's doing, or at least he knows why he's doing it, instead of doing it just because everybody else is doing the same.

I will be the first to admit that I am just learning here.  In the case of LOCM, I actually did look at the balance sheet and Income statement first before buying, and that was the only stock I bought today besides FUEL.  I did look at the site and I had used it before, and since I see no obvious advertising there, I thought that they found a great way to monetize.

So there was some study, as much as can be expected in this short time.  The rest of it was just watching the 5 minute candlestick chart.  I acgtually had a sell in for 5.16, I was too high with it.  On the other hand, even though I did OK on CNLG yesterday, I really didnt know what the news meant there, so I need to rethink things going forward.

But I got lucky today and lost only $20 in commissions, so I will like that small wound and hope I learned something.  Thanks as always for the sage advice David, I will go back and watch more of your videos to keep learning how you make the choices.

Ok, lets close this for the week. The 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/3stocksonfire_3sof.php) was up again today, to an overall gain of 37% in its first 6 days of trading, from $15,000 to the current $20,575.

So thank you, have a great weekend :)
