Awesome results :o

• Amkor Reports Strong Fourth Quarter 2007 Results
Business Wire (Wed, Feb 13)

This stock went down from $16 to $6 while fundamentals kept improving ... the market works in strange ways, sometimes discounting totally wrong scenarios. This is why one is better off trusting is own judgment than the market's judgment, thinking with his own head instead of following the crowd. Of course, one needs to be objective and not fall into hoping and wishing. He also needs to be humble and recognize when he made a mistake, a mistake that needs to be corrected.

Coming back to AMKR, $0.46 quarterly EPS was the highest in the company's history, going back to 1997.

Now analysts estimate AMKR will earn $1.22 in 2008 (up from $1.11 in 2007) and $1.39 in 2009. The growth rate expected for 2009 is about 14% and the forward EPS multiple is 8.1. This is cheap.

I guess the multiple will equal the growth rate in the current bull run, this would mean AMKR would run to a value of $19.46 a share.

I feel like buying it back (I sold it at $13.71 in the past - it's a pity I didn't buy it back in the $6-$8 range) now ... but I'm fully invested and not thinking of selling anything for now.

Good luck if you own AMKR :)

It's funny reading what I wrote just above, in the days of my ignorance (which unfortunately persist, hopefully a little less).

AMKR is "cheap", if "cheap" means valued at a discount relative to its peers. Even yesterday AMKR reported higher than expected results:

Amkor Technology 1Q profit more than doubles on sales
AP (Wed 5:44pm)

The stock was up 10% in after hours trading.

AMKR is cheap, most people can see that through simple calculus and comparisons. But why?

It is cheap because of the following:

(sorry for the scroll)

Ok, you see there are 7 analysts providing estimates for 2008 ($1.17 EPS), 6 analysts with estimates for 2009 ($1.36 EPS), but just one single analyst providing estimates for 2010, and he's calling for a drop in EPS to $0.13.

The guy making this 2010 call is Timothy Arcuri, from Citigroup:

Actually, yesterday, due to stronger than expected results, he raised his 2010 EPS estimate from $0.13 to $0.14 (wow) and maintained his SELL rating (you have the full report attached below).

On March 18th, 2008, the referred analyst wrote a report called:

Why AMKR Can Go Back to $8; Reiterate Sell

(you also have this one below)

His calls and predictions are the main reason why AMKR is valued at a discount versus its peers. Now, two things may happen: other analysts risk more and also make calls for 2010, potentially raising the 2010 EPS estimate or else, this Citigroup analyst changes his mind. I guess one of these would be really strong catalysts for AMKR to correct its discount and potentially trade at a premium. While none of these happens, every rally will probably be met with selling pressure, as AMKR trades between, say, $8 and $12.

Provides a wide portfolio of packaging and test technologies and services; Maintains a primary role in the design and development of new package and test technologies; Cultivates long-standing relationships with customers, including many of the world's foremost semiconductor companies; Develops expertise in high-volume manufacturing processes to provide services; and Provides a broadly diversified operational scope, with production capabilities in China, Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and the United States U.S. Packaging and test are integral parts of the process of manufacturing semiconductor devices. This process begins with silicon wafers and involves the fabrication of electronic circuitry into complex patterns, thus creating large numbers of individual chips on the wafers. The fabricated wafers are probed to ensure the individual devices meet design specifications. The packaging process creates an electrical interconnect between the semiconductor chip and the system board through wire bonding or bumping technologies. In packaging, individual chips are separated from the fabricated semiconductor wafers, attached to a substrate and then encased in a protective material to provide optimal electrical connectivity and thermal performance. The packaged chips are then tested using sophisticated equipment to ensure that each packaged chip meets its design specifications. The principal materials used in its packaging process are leadframes or laminate substrates, gold wire and mold compound. The semiconductor packaging process uses chemicals and gases and generates byproducts that are subject to governmental regulations. As of December 31, 2005, Amkor had 24,000 full-time employees.

Amkor Technology upgraded to buy from neutral at American Technology Research
Monday , June 16, 2008 21:50ET

SAN FRANCISCO, Jun 17, 2008 (Thomson Financial via COMTEX) -- Shares of Amkor Technology Inc. rallied Monday after American Technology Research upgraded the stock to buy from neutral, citing demand strength for high-end handsets that will likely require increased stacked die assembly and packaging through the second half of 2008.

The Chandler, Ariz.-based company provides semiconductor packaging and test services.

A recent enterprise resource planning system disruption at Amkor's Philippines facility in early May also appears to be contained and is well understood by investors, the broker said.

"Amkor has strong customer exposure in the communications segment from most of the major handset and communications related chip customers," analyst Bill Ong said in a note to clients.

He raised per-share profit estimates for 2008 and 2009 to $1.38 and $1.45, respectively. The mean estimates of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were per-share profits of $1.33 in 2008 and $1.36 in 2009. Ong has a price target of $14 on the stock.

Amkor shares were trading up 11% at $11.75. Brigid Gaffikin bg/pc
