Generex Biotechnology Comments on Recent Trading Activity
Tuesday March 11, 8:00 am ET
Rodman & Renshaw Analyst Reiterates Market Outperform Rating and $6 Price Target

WORCESTER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Generex Biotechnology Corporation (NasdaqCM:GNBT), the leader in drug delivery for metabolic diseases through the inner lining of the mouth, commented on trading activity in its stock. The Company believes that the decline in its common stock yesterday was related to the decisions of Eli Lilly and Company as well as Pfizer and Novo Nordisk to discontinue the development of their inhaled insulin products. Generex believes that those decisions enhance its competitive position in the marketplace, as it removes potentially competitive products. Unlike safety concerns related to those products, Generex's proprietary platform technology delivers insulin into the human body through the oral cavity, with no deposit in the lungs. In clinical tests, the drug has always demonstrated an excellent safety profile. Generex recently commenced a Phase III study of its flagship product, Generex Oral-lyn™, which is available for sale in Ecuador for the treatment of patients with Type-1 and Type-2 diabetes and which was approved for sale in India in October 2007.

In a research report published yesterday by Navdeep S. Jaikaria, Ph.D., a Senior Biotechnology Analyst at Rodman & Renshaw, he reiterated his Market Outperform Rating on Generex and $6 price target. Some of the highlights of the report, titled, "NO IMPACT ON ORAL-LYN FROM LILLY TERMINATION OF ALKERMES INHALED INSULIN" were:

Alternative Insulin Competitors Continue to Fall and Enhance the Oral-ly Opportunity Last Friday, Alkermes Inc. (ALKS, Not Rated) announced that it received a letter from Eli Lilly (LLY, Not Rated) terminating their license agreement for the development of AIR Inhaled Insulin. This news, as well as the announcement in October 2007 by Pfizer Inc. (PFE, Not Rated) of the termination of its development of Exubera, an in-market inhalable insulin by Nektar Therapeutics Inc. (NKTR, Not Rated), have continued to place unwarranted pressure on the shares of Generex, which is in the final stages of preparation for a Phase III trial with Oral-lyn, the company's proprietary oral insulin product candidate. We believe disappointing sales with Exubera inhaled insulin made uncertain the prospects for further commercialization of Alkermes' AIR and AERx, an inhaled insulin system by Novo Nordisk A-S (NVO, Not Rated) whose Phase III development was discontinued in January 2008. We believe this news is positive for Generex as they enhance Oral-lyn's opportunity as a safe, more tolerable, non-injectable insulin for the treatment of patients with diabetes.

We Reiterate that the High Hurdles with the Inhaled Route of Insulin Delivery are Not Likely to be Observed with Buccal Cavity (Oral) Delivery of Insulin Concerns continue to grow that inhaled insulins, such as Exubera, may all be plagued by the observation of an early, non-progressive decline in lung function that does not improve over long-term use of Exubera, as well as problems associated with formulation of insulin into inhalable powder form. Further, the advancement of more convenient injectable devices, such as pens filled with pre-mixed insulin analogs, obviated the value of convenient mealtime titratable insulin delivery. We believe the significant hurdles seen with the inhalation route of delivery bode negative for inhaled insulin products, and open the door for Oral-lyn as the insulin potentially with the best non-injectable alternative route of mealtime insulin delivery.

UPDATE 2-Generex: stock drop related to inhaled insulin concerns
Tue Mar 11, 2008 11:01am EDT

March 11 (Reuters) - Generex Biotechnology Corp (GNBT,Trade) attributed the sharp decline of its stock price on Monday to a decision by several leading drugmakers to stop developing inhaled insulin products.

Shares of Generex, which is also developing an inhaled insulin product that is in a late-stage trial, fell as much as 20 percent on Monday. The company said unlike safety concerns related to other inhaled insulin products, its experimental Generex Oral-lyn delivers insulin into the body through the mouth, with no deposit in the lungs.

Eli Lilly & Co (LLY,Trade), which was developing an inhaled insulin treatment with Alkermes Inc (ALKS,Trade), was the latest drugmaker to terminate development of inhaled insulin and follows similar decisions by Pfizer Inc (PFE,Trade) and Novo Nordisk ((NOVOb.CO)).

In related news, Mannkind ((MNKD.O)) on Monday also said it was committed to developing its inhaled insulin product.

Shares of Generex rose about 13 percent before the bell to $1.06, after closing at 94 cents Monday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Jennifer Robin Raj in Bangalore; Editing by Bernard Orr)

Initial Clinical Study Sites in the United States, Canada and Ukraine Primed to Dose Patients

WORCESTER, Mass., March 11, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Generex Biotechnology Corporation (NasdaqCM:GNBT - News), the leader in drug delivery for metabolic diseases through the inner lining of the mouth, announced today that canisters of Generex Oral-lyn(tm), the Company's proprietary oral insulin spray product, have been labeled and packaged for Phase III clinical trial sites in the United States, Canada and Ukraine. Both placebo and active canisters are ready to be shipped to the clinical sites which will permit the initiation of the pivotal study. Clinical supplies of canisters for the balance of the sites are scheduled to be labeled and packaged in the next 45 days.

The Phase III protocol, identified as GEN084-OL, calls for a six-month trial which is expected to include 750 patients with Type-1 diabetes mellitus. The Company previously received a non-objection letter from Health Canada to conduct this pivotal study and the FDA did not object to the study. The primary objective of the study is to compare the efficacy of Generex Oral-lyn and the RapidMist Diabetes Management System with that of standard regular injectable human insulin therapy as measured by Hba1c in patients with Type-1 diabetes mellitus.

``We are systematically implementing our action plan to commence patient dosing at all global Phase III centers for our flagship product,'' said Anna Gluskin, the Company's President and Chief Executive Officer. ``We believe that our careful planning and attention to detail will ensure a smooth transition from drug handling to dosing. Previous studies conducted using Generex Oral-lyn have demonstrated an excellent safety profile and promising results, providing us with confidence that Generex Oral-lyn represents the first safe and effective alternative to needle sticks for millions of patients with diabetes.''

100,000 last week in UK H1N1

"Flu in England Hits Decade High as Pandemic Spreads"

(Bloomberg) -- England and Wales are suffering the worst bout of flu in a decade, kindled by international travel and later school breaks than in the rest of Europe.

Doctors reported 155 cases of flu-like illness per 100,000 people across the two countries in the week ended July 19, the Royal College of General Practitioners said today. The number of swine flu cases in the U.K. rose by 100,000 in the past week, Britain's Chief Medical Officer Liam Donaldson said.

"It's highly unusual to get any rise of that sort during the summer months," Donaldson said at a briefing in London today.

There have been 840 hospitalizations linked to the pandemic flu and the death toll was unchanged from a week ago at 26, he said. London's Tower Hamlets is still the regional health authority with the highest rate of medical consultations for flu-like illness in England and six of the country's top 10 areas are in the capital, he said. Even northern regions such as Yorkshire and Humber are "up to the highest levels of flu activities," he said.

The rate of infection in England and Wales is the highest since the winter of 2000 and double that of the previous week, the Royal College's research and surveillance center in Birmingham said. Rates may continue to climb as the first influenza pandemic in 41 years spreads among people with no immunity to the new H1N1 strain, said John Paget, an epidemiologist at the Utrecht-based Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research.

'Totally Unusual'

"The curve is going straight up," said Paget, who monitors flu patterns for euroflu.org. "This is totally unusual. It just confirms that it's a pandemic virus."

The influx of travelers arriving at London's airports probably meant the country was "sufficiently seeded with the virus when the schools were still open." This wasn't the case on the continent, Paget said. He expects flu rates to surge there once children return to school.

London's Heathrow airport is Europe's busiest, with 66.9 million passengers using it in 2008, according to the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority.

Children tend to speed transmission of the disease because they spend the school day in groups and they're more susceptible to flu than adults. So far, 60 percent of the world's reported swine flu cases occurred in those aged 18 or younger, researchers said in a study published in The Lancet this week.

School Closings

"The schools in England have only just closed, and we know that has a big effect," said Hugh Pennington, a retired microbiologist and emeritus professor of bacteriology at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. In France, by contrast, school ended the week of June 29.

Governments worldwide are battling the H1N1 virus, which has taken root across the globe faster than any previous flu pandemic, according to the Geneva-based World Health Organization. Donaldson last week said the National Health Service is bracing for as many as 65,000 deaths from the disease."
