Girl in China bird flu village dies: HK paper

HONG KONG (Reuters) - A 12-year-old girl died suffering flu-like symptoms in a village in central China where the mainland's third outbreak of bird flu in a week has been confirmed, the South China Morning Post said on Thursday.

He Yin and her 10-year-old brother fell ill about a week ago after eating a sick chicken that had died, the Post said, quoting their father, He Tieguang.

"We had dead chickens before and nobody has ever got sick because of that. So I thought it's okay," her father was quoted as saying.

So far there was no evidence linking her death to the outbreak of bird flu in the village in Hunan province and none of the adults in her family had shown any flu symptoms, the paper said. Doctors told her family she had died from fever.

The newspaper did not say when the girl died.

China has said the Hunan outbreak had been brought under control.

Farmers in the village of Wantang said many birds suddenly died about 10 days ago, the newspaper said.

The     World Health Organization has said the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu is endemic in poultry in China and across much of Asia. Health experts fear it may only be a matter of time before it develops the ability to pass easily from human to human, triggering a pandemic.

Since breaking out in late 2003 in     South Korea, H5N1 has killed more than 60 people in four Asian countries and reached as far west as European Russia, Turkey and Romania, tracking the paths of migratory birds.

China has reported no human cases so far.

Good moring to the west of Atlantic Ocean and good afternoon to the east!  :D

I posted the transcript of yesterday's Life Sciences Conference presentation by CEO in New York, and there are some very good news and continuing confirmations that the company is doing the "right" things!!!

CEO confirmed that Novavax is actively seeking "government or corporate partner"!!!   Yes!!!
Can you say possible merger/another partnership?  WOW!!!

CEO also stated that in addition to the FDA approved Estrasorb and the two new products that will be announced in about a week, Novavax has "Emerging pipeline with about 10 new products!"  So unlike some other Avian plays, Novavax has SOLID and ACTUAL product lines that are generating cash revenue ($12.5 million payment and continuing royalties with Estrasorb plus release of two new products in one week)!

CEO also stated that Novavax has "FULL SOLUTION" to the Avian virus problem.

"The whole story is that we can make a particulate vaccine using genetic engineering, and customize that vaccine to the emerging strain, and make it highly immunogenic because of its inherent properties of being a particle, by combining with an adjuvant like Novasomes."

And this Novasomes, which already demonstrated clinical effectiveness for Novavax to develop a single dose "human" Avian vaccine (instead of current 2 dose vaccines that requires a second shot after 30 days)  is a "proprietary" product!  - Can we say licensing!!!  $$$

With Novavax having the mass manufacturing process (Wave BioTech) and "world-class" facility to allow fast and cost-effective vaccine production, as CEO stated, Novavax offers a solution to the Avian virus problem that is "BEST IN CLASS"!!!  Yes!!!

These are great news and ongoing developments!!!

I am playing catch up here,  :D and the next post will confirm what CEO presented yesterday.

Novavax Shares Surge on Bird Flu Fears
Tuesday October 25, 4:24 pm ET
Novavax Shares Surge on Second Straight Day After Confirmed Cases of Bird Flu Outside Asia

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of biotech company Novavax Inc. surged for the second consecutive day Tuesday, following a weekend where the avian flu virus H5N1 was identified in birds in Turkey, Romania and Russia and a dead parrot imported to Britain from South America was found to have been carrying the virus.

Novavax shares jumped $1.38, or 33 percent, to close at $5.53 on the Nasdaq, after reaching a new 52-week high of $5.88, at nearly 12 times their average volume. Shares closed up 10 percent on Monday, and started surging in August from a 52-week low of 70 cents, when the company presented animal data showing their vaccine could protect animals against avian flu.

Share prices edged slightly in after-market activity, down 7 cents to $5.46.

The company also announced in September that it would collaborate with Somerset, N.J.-based Wave Biotech to try to develop a way to produce its Virus-Like Particle avian flu vaccine on a commercial scale. The VLP imitates a virus to elicit an immune response, but cannot infect cells because it lacks the genetic material of a virus, unlike standard vaccines.

In an investor note on Friday, RBC Capital Markets analyst Ken Trbovich upgraded Novavax to "Sector Perform" from "Underperform" and raised his target price to $3 from $1, after the company received a recent $12.5 million license and supply agreement from Esprit Pharma for the Estrasorb topical estrogen therapy.

However, the analyst also noted that fears of avian flu could focus attention on the VLP technology, which could possibly create quick versions of vaccines for mutated flu strains.

As evidenced in last year's flu vaccine shortages in the United States, vaccine-making suffers from the drawback of long ramp-up times, where the product must be incubated over months at a time using century-old chicken egg-based technology.

"If the company can be in human testing of the vaccine in early 2006, they will likely attract additional attention from the U.S. government or prospective partners," Trbovich told investors. "A partnership or significant U.S. government grant would additionally bolster our confidence in the program and NVAX's cash reserves. We believe that the media and political fervor surrounding avian flu will likely increase as we move farther into traditional flu season."

Livelife, a question:  I noticed that the MSN site lists NVAX first b/c it is the biggest price gainer on increased insitutional activity.  Is it also saying that it has the largest increase in institutional buying?

OK hyperactive traders.  When is it a buy again?

QuoteOK hyperactive traders.  When is it a buy again?

I am covering the paper-trade short position I took yesterday at the 9 ema (currently $4.06). Probably hits the 9 tomorrow. That would be a possible buy point for the hyperactive trader.

What can I say... :'(

What happened today?

Was it the bearish market trend?  Was it profit taking that went overboard?

I had to look at my wife this morning and we made an executive decision.

With the broad based sell off (the sea of red!), we decided to sell and hold cash and ride out the bearish market trend.  And return on rebound.

While I watched the intraday charts in disbelief, I began looking at my 20-40 stock list that I was going to "diversify" my gains from NVAX into.  I had a discussion with my retired daytrader dad and I decided to "park" my money in GNBT (yes, he gave me the "buy" nod).

GNBT was one of few "Avian related" plays that wasn't affected by the bearish selloff.  So, I figured that it would be a good stock to be "parked" in while reassessing the bearish market trend and the Avian stock plays.

I bought 36,000 shares at $1.34.

Good trading!
