Does anyone know if Rodman & Renshaw have strong ties with any large pharmas or biotechs out there? I've been scouring the internet to see if there are any strong ties and the only one I can come up with is Amgen (check groups.google.com). God knows that Amgen has more money to burn than most in the industry. Not to start any crazy rumors, but if there was one company that could easily partner/acquire Novavax, it would be them.

higher high and higher low, this looks a buy here. IMO

I've been holding and adding ELN in the 10's and low 11's. 15 may be a short term target but medium range I expect to see it back in the mid 20's and above.

I wrote about ELN at the Stock Picking Board, if I held it I would keep it but at this level I'm not a buyer. Everybody is long and expecting the same news now. But I agree with you, there's more upside potential to it.

Nice speculation RichL74, but NVAX doesn't need it  :)

Insiders continue to buy, Gary Evans, director at the company, bought 50,000 shares at $3.498 and 50,000 more at $3.60. Now, checking the latest 8-K report from the company, filed yesterday just before the close with the SEC, it reads:

«Novavax, Inc. has created a new Government Relations Committee of the Board of Directors to assist the company with respect to the development and funding of its on-going avian flu and seasonal flu vaccine programs. John O. Marsh, Jr., former Congressman, Counselor (with Cabinet rank) to President Gerald Ford and Secretary of the Army, is Chairman of the new committee, which is comprised of four members. The purpose of the committee is to monitor legislative and regulatory initiatives and guide management of the company in pursuing research and development funding specifically relating to vaccines as well as the company's other current and future products and product development efforts. The committee also will be responsible, among other things, for assisting management of the company in communicating, working with and educating local, regional and national legislators and regulators on the efforts of, and issues of interest to, Novavax. »

You know why this director is buying. He knows massive public funding will go to NVAX to address the avian flu possible upcoming pandemic. The government's plan is to spend $6.7B in 2006 for this, let's see how much goes to NVAX, which has a market cap of just $190M at this point.

I'll continue to be long and strong NVAX, if the stock breaks $3.94 on the upside watch for a huge run  8)

Hi all,

My family and I have been sick since last Friday and haven't been able to keep up all the postings.

I did finalize and revised the stock trading template as I mentioned in the swing trading MB:

Interesting angle on using low dose estradiol in late stage breast cancer.  Novavax produces estradiol in transdermal and oral forms.

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 7 (HealthDay News) -- It sounds like a paradox, and it is: Even though estrogen can trigger the growth of breast cancer cells, small doses of the hormone can also help kill tumor cells.

In fact, low-dose estrogen may help breast cancer patients who've become resistant to therapies that work by blocking the hormone.

"It's all counterintuitive," said V. Craig Jordan, the Alfred G. Knudson Chair of Cancer Research at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. Jordan is widely hailed as the "father of tamoxifen" for his efforts in developing the estrogen-blocking drug that helps prevent breast cancer recurrence.

If estrogen is given at a specific time, he said, "instead of stimulating the growth [of breast cancer cells], it sees these dysfunctional aberrant cancer cells and instead of telling them to grow, tells them to die."

Jordan's team has published a series of papers in the scientific literature over the last few years, showing that is in fact the case.
..........
The study was conducted using breast cancer cell lines resistant to estrogen withdrawal. These cells underwent cell death when treated with very small concentrations of estradiol. The estrogen was 100 percent effective in killing the cancer cells, Jordan said.

Kill rates were higher in cells treated with estradiol, compared to those treated with fulvestrant, an estrogen-blocker, or cells from an untreated control group. Jordan's team also injected estrogen-treated cancer cells into mice, resulting in complete tumor regression.
............
Jordan said his team hopes to start clinical trials involving low-dose estradiol soon. "This is a true example of things we find in the laboratory that we can apply to patients very quickly," he said.

Women with breast cancer who have undergone treatment and then are put on the estrogen-blocking therapies often stop responding, Jordan said. "About 50,000 women [in the U.S.] a year have this drug-resistance problem," he estimated. "We'd probably be able to help a third of those" with the estrogen treatment, he added.

Good write up by Senator Frist (from great state of Tennessee)

4. Vaccines
Fourth, vaccines are our best line of defense—for prevention. Yet, unfortunately, until we identify the strain—which we can do only when sustained human-to-human transmission occurs—we can not begin to produce a targeted, fully effective vaccine. With our current grossly inadequate vaccine manufacturing capacity, it could take as long as a whole year to achieve "bug to drug"—that's the window of time between first identifying the specific strain and manufacturing a vaccine available for distribution. In a time of pandemic, that's an unacceptable wait.

We have a dangerously inadequate vaccine manufacturing base in this country. Why? Bottom-line: there's so little profit and so much uncertainty in vaccine manufacturing today.

Thirty years ago there were 24 vaccine manufacturers. Today there are only 5...and only 1 on U.S. soil (Sanofi Pasteur).
..........

How do we grow our manufacturing base?

• We can immediately begin by increasing the annual market for the seasonal flu vaccine. The most we've ever sold in a year is 83 million doses, but by recommending that a larger percentage of the population receive the annual vaccine, we can increase the demand for vaccines and incentivize manufacturers to enter the market.

• We should target tax credits to increase manufacturing capacity, streamline regulations, and offer balanced, sensible liability protection for manufacturers to make these life-saving emergency medicines.

• Together these will lay the groundwork for a quicker "bug-to-drug" timeframe.

5. Research and Development

5th is research and development.

Vaccines and antivirals our best tools for the present. But research is our best hope for the future. We must harness the best minds in academia, and in the public and private sectors. We need to bring them together to form a "Manhattan Project for the 21st Century" which can help us better defend against naturally occurring, accidental, and intentional threats — including infectious diseases.

One example is targeted research for a cell-based flu vaccine. By investing in cell-based manufacturing technology, rather than relying on antiquated egg-based technology, the window for bug to drug can be cut from a year to less than six months. With tens of thousands of people dying every week, every moment counts.

NVAX broke the $3.94 horizontal resistance level on the upside and that's quite bullish. Volume was above average on the breakout. This was a breakaway gap (it occurs when there's a gap up over a resistance level, without touching it) so there's no need to fill it.

Fundamentals and technicals are working in tandem on NVAX, I'll continue holding the stock for the foreseeable future.

Novavax Shares Up After Marsh Announcement

Novavax Shares Rise After Tapping Former Rep. John O. Marsh to Lead Bird-Flu Lobbying Effort

http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/051209/novavax_mover.html?.v=1

NEW YORK (AP) -- Novavax Inc. shares jumped Friday after the biotech company said former Congressman John O. Marsh would lead a four-member committee in lobbying the government for support in development of its avian flu vaccine.

The Malvern, Pa.-based company is developing a number of vaccines to protect humans against the avian flu virus H5N1, which has killed some 70 people in Asia. Novavax announced in September it would collaborate with Somerset, N.J.-based Wave Biotech to develop a way to produce its Virus-Like Particle avian flu vaccine on a commercial scale.

Now, Novavax hopes Marsh and others appointed to its new Government Relations Committee can help persuade the government for research and development assistance. Marsh served in Congress between 1963 to 1971, and was also a counselor to President Gerald Ford.

"The purpose of the committee is to monitor legislative and regulatory initiatives and guide management of the company in pursuing research and development funding specifically relating to vaccines as well as the company's other current and future products and product development efforts," Novavax said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. "The committee also will be responsible, among other things, for assisting management of the company in communicating, working with and educating local, regional and national legislators and regulators on the efforts of, and issues of interest to, Novavax."

An "even break" for NVAX, but $0.02 gain after hour trading.  As RSI approaches 70-80, it should  indicate a "sell" signal.

This article: Novavax Shares Up After Marsh Announcement together with this other Congressional Testimony: Avian Flu will probably continue to fuel speculation that massive government funding is coming to NVAX.

I'll continue to buy the rumor (in this case hold, since I already bought) so later I can sell the fact.

Today was amazing.  I almost sold a number of times, but it kept going up.  The candlestick is very bullish, but it wasnt 100% clear why the stock went up so much.  I am trying to form a plan for tomorrow, and hopefully David will have some input on the premium board tomorrow, but I am wondering what others here think about the stock after the runnup?  It seems to me the drivers for the stock today were:

1.)  Announcement of a licensing extension (apparently worth about $1M, so not huge news compared to the Estrasorb deal)
2.)  Short squeeze started from this news
3.)  Continuation of recent good news (insider buying, government lobbying committee)
4.)  Buzz about government funding

My thought is that without further news, the stock hits another resistance at $5 or $5.10.  What do people here think?
