FYI:
MRAM benefits:
Detailed benefits of MRAM
The non-volatility attribute of MRAM carries significant implications, especially for mobile computing devices. Memory technologies like DRAM and SRAM require constant electrical power to retain stored data. When power is cut off, all data in memory is lost. A laptop computer, for example, works from a copy of its software stored in memory. When turned on, a working version of the software is copied from the hard-disk drive into memory, so the user can access it quickly. Every time the power is turned off and then back on, the process must start over. By using MRAM, the laptop could work more like other electronic devices such as a television or radio: turn the power on and the machine jumps almost instantly to life with settings just as you had left them.
Non-volatility can save power as well. Since MRAM will not need constant power to keep the data intact, it could consume much less than current random access memory technologies, extending the battery life of cell phones, handheld devices, laptops and other battery powered products.
The high-speed attribute of MRAM means that electronic products can more quickly access data, and MRAM's high-density means greater storage capacity.

NVE Notified of Grant of Patent Relating to Magnetothermal MRAM
Tuesday April 4, 8:00 am ET

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., April 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NVE Corporation (Nasdaq: NVEC - News) said today that it has been notified by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office of the expected grant of a patent relating to magnetothermal Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory (MRAM).

NVE has been notified that the patent, titled "Magnetic Memory Layers Thermal Pulse Transitions," will be issued today. The patent is number 7,023,723 and is the grant of a patent under the application published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as number 2004-0125673. The grant is in addition to patent number 6,963,098 titled "Thermally Operated Switch Control Memory Cell," which was granted in November 2005, as well as other NVE patents relating to MRAM and magnetothermal MRAM.

MRAM is a revolutionary integrated-circuit memory fabricated with nanotechnology that uses electron spin to store data. MRAM has been called the ideal memory because it has the potential to combine the speed of SRAM, the density of DRAM, and the non-volatility of flash memory.

Magnetothermal MRAM uses a combination of ultra-fast magnetic fields and heat pulses, both from electrical current, to reduce the energy required to write data and allow reduction of the memory cell size while maintaining thermal stability. Thus magnetothermal MRAM has the potential to enable low power, dense MRAM.

"Magnetothermal MRAM could be the MRAM of the future because it promises to reduce both cell size and write current," said NVE President and CEO Daniel A. Baker, Ph.D. "This patent grant strengthens our magnetothermal MRAM intellectual property portfolio."

The grant will be NVE's thirty-sixth issued U.S. patent. The company has more than 100 patents worldwide either issued, pending, or licensed from others. Links to the new patent as well as NVE's other U.S. patents can be found at the "About NVE" section of the company's website ( http://www.nve.com ).

NVE is a leader in the practical commercialization of spintronics, a nanotechnology that many experts believe represents the next generation of microelectronics. NVE licenses its MRAM intellectual property and sells spintronic sensors and couplers to revolutionize data sensing and transmission.

NVE Notified of Two Patent Grants
Tuesday , May 30, 2006 08:00 ET

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., May 30, 2006 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- NVE Corporation (Nasdaq: NVEC) said that it has been notified by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that two patents are expected to be granted today. The patents are titled "Two-Axis Magnetic Field Sensor" and "Superparamagnetic Devices."

The Two-Axis Magnetic Field Sensor is patent number 7,054,114, and is the grant of a patent under the application published by the USPTO as number 2004-0137275. The invention is for a spintronic device that can detect the magnitude and orientation of magnetic fields. Applications for such devices might include Magnetoresitive Random Access Memory (MRAM), or military, industrial, and medical sensors.

The Superparamagnetic Devices patent is number 7,054,118 and is the first patent granted from the application published by the USPTO under number 2004-0023065. Other patents are possible based on this application, although there can be no assurance if or when additional patents will be granted.

Superparamagnetism is the magnetic state of a material between highly ordered parallel spins (ferromagnetism) and randomly ordered spins (paramagnetism). The superparamagnetic effect occurs in ferromagnetic particles smaller than a critical value or at temperatures higher than a critical temperature. In conventional storage systems such as disk drives, superparamagnetism can be undesirable because it limits storage density. The NVE invention utilizes the superparamagnetic effect to improve the accuracy of spintronic sensors where a small sensed field is sufficient to order the spins in a superparamagnetic material. More accurate sensors would be useful in a number of applications including military, medical, and biosensor.

The grants will bring NVE's U.S. patent total to 38. The company has more than 100 patents worldwide issued, pending, or licensed from others. Links to the new patents and NVE's other U.S. patents can be found at the "About NVE" section of the company's Website ( http://www.nve.com ).

NO  new news:

NVE Investors' Ears Perk Up
Tuesday August 1, 2:05 pm ET
By Jack Uldrich

When I first saw that shares of of NVE Corporation (Nasdaq: NVEC - News) surged 26% yesterday, I expected to learn that Freescale Semiconductors (Nasdaq: FSL - News), which a few weeks ago introduced the first magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM) chip, had admitted to using NVE's MRAM intellectual property in the production of those chips.

Alas, there was no such announcement. In fact, after scouring NVE's website and other financial news-related sources, I could find no discernible news to account for such a sizeable increase.

The best I can determine is that a Minnesota-based business magazine had a short article announcing that NVE's technology is now being used by Starkey Laboratories, the world's leading manufacturer of custom hearing aids, to improve the performance of its Destiny series of hearing-aid devices. Specifically, the article attributes NVE's technology with helping the device perform so well that Starkey is "well ahead of projections that it would sell a million units in a year's time."

Reportedly, the NVE sensors are so sensitive that the hearing aid will automatically switch modes without the wearer's intervention. For instance, if a user must make a cell phone call, there is no need to manually switch the device -- the sensor simply detects the cell phone and adjusts the device to eliminate any feedback. The magnetic sensors also make the hearing aids smaller, more comfortable, and more energy-efficient.

But investors must ask themselves whether this news, coupled with word last month that NVE's Q1 2007 revenues had risen 20% to $3.6 million (and net income more than doubled to $890,000), is worth such a large increase. While I agree that the two pieces of information bode well for NVE -- and should be rewarded with an increase in the share price -- I don't believe that either piece of news warrants a 26% spike right now.

For one thing, the news about the hearing aid isn't new. Reports of NVE technology in Starkey devices surfaced almost 18 months ago, although the hearing aids' improved sales are certainly noteworthy.

In addition, the overall market for NVE sensors remains relatively modest. In fact, the entire medical sensor market (which includes pacemakers, implantable cardiovertor-defibrillators and neurostimulators), is only expected to grow from roughly $650 million this year to $845 million by 2008, according to the Freedonia Group.

To be sure, this is nothing to sneeze at, but it's nowhere near the $50 billion that MRAM experts routinely tout as the potential market for NVE's spintronic technology, a figure that catapulted the company's stock to more than $60 a share back in early 2004.

It is highly unlikely that the stock will return to such levels anytime time soon. Still, investors should keep an eye on the company's entry into additional medical device markets. For some time, NVE has been selling sensor technology to St. Jude Medical (NYSE: STJ - News). This technology allows doctors' computers to exchange data swiftly and noninvasively with implanted medical devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators.

It's a promising technology, and there will undoubtedly be a growing market for such devices as the baby boom generation continues to age. For the company to prosper, though, it will need more agreements with the likes of leading medical-device manufacturers such as Medtronic (NYSE: MDT - News) and Boston Scientific (NYSE: BSX - News).

If it can do this, NVE investors will not only be hearing a good buying opportunity, they'll be feeling it in their heart.

Although his wife would vehemently disagree, Fool contributor Jack Uldrich's hearing is actually pretty good. He is the author of two books on nanotechnology, and he owns stock in St. Jude Medical. The Fool has a strict disclosure policy.

Blasting off more.

NVE Corp. (NVEC - commentary - Cramer's Take) consolidated within a very tight range for quite a while before breaking out a couple of weeks ago. Last week's pullback is still unresolved. A fall back below $17.50 would put the uptrend in jeopardy, but if sufficient buying soaks up all the supply at current levels, the coast is clear for additional advances.
