I like alternative energy very much (both as an investment and for environmental reasons).  I can feel good for owning it while profiting at the same time. (certainly better than owning Exxon or Lockheed Martin)

I'm currently holding DESC and considering diversifying into the sector.  So far considering ESLR, ENER and HW.

Cumulina and La-onda, you 2 seem to be the resident AE experts.  My knowledge of AE is limited.  I know that DESC primarily focuses on fuel cells.  I think Solar, nuclear, liquid coal, etc all seem to have promise.  What would u suggest as a good way to diversify for a long term investment?

Hi logocovet,
in my opinion ESLR is a good stock for solar diversification.
Please check the updated Jeferies analysis, lots of good information:

Evergreen Solar (ESLR-$10.26-Buy) announced last night that it will restate its 1Q:05 and 2Q:05 quarterly statements due to certain incorrect classifications of its EverQ JV on the cash statement. While there is no P&L impact, certainly statements of "material weakness" and "control deficiencies" could weigh on the stock, although we believe our investment thesis remains intact and we would be aggressive buyers under $10.

ESLR explained that it incorrectly recorded capital contributions of about $3.8M by Q-Cells into EverQ as operating cash flows instead of investing cash flows. In addition, the company failed to record about $2M (related to a letter of credit for equipment purchased by EverQ) as restricted cash and account for the transaction as an investing cash flow. Following this discovery, the company has stated it has enhanced internal accounting reviews and procedures to ensure that information from EverQ is reported in a timely manner.

While this trivial accounting mistake is disappointing and has caused volatility, we would continue to be long-term buyers on this weakness, as we believe Evergreen remains positioned to deliver solid financial results (although numbers will be lumpy in the near term), driven by increased manufacturing throughput, future capacity expansions that deploy next-generation technologies, and additional benefits coming from normalized silicon pricing.

With a robust "sold-out" solar market that should continue to grow about 30% annually, attractive competitive positioning, significant margin leverage, and solid visibility into EPS growth, Evergreen remains a core holding for small-cap growth investors, in our opinion.

Our $15-$20 price target range is based on a multiple of 30-40x estimated 2008 EPS of $0.50.

SunPower Shines
Thursday November 17, 4:48 pm ET
By W.D. Crotty (TMFWD40)

The sun is shining brightly on the stock of solar cell manufacturer SunPower (Nasdaq: SPWR - News). The company's hot initial public offering (IPO), originally priced between $12 and $14 a stub, achieved a final IPO price of $18 a share.

Demand for the stock spilled right onto Wall Street, where stock opened at $28 a share. That's 55.6% higher than the IPO price and 100% above the high end of the initial pricing. Ultimately, the stock closed at $25.30, for a more humble 40.5% return. Not bad for a day's work.

SunPower now sports a $1.5 billion market cap, at least for the next 18 hours. What are investors getting for their money? There are nine-month revenues of $49.4 million that produced a loss of $15.2 million. There's also $138.6 million in proceeds from the stock's sale, with even more expected from the underwriters selling their overallotment of 1.155 million shares.

It blows my mind that on the same day investors traded SunPower to the moon, they've sent the stock's parent company, Cypress Semiconductor (NYSE: CY - News), down 1%. After the IPO, Cypress still owns 52 million shares and 98% of the voting rights at SunPower. At $26 a share, Cypress' stock is worth $1.35 billion; compare that to its entire market cap of $2.1 billion.

By spinning off SunPower, Cypress has unloaded a money-losing operation in need of cash. This should help Cypress with its long-term profitability, and all the IPO cash will certainly help SunPower. The newly separate company plans to triple its manufacturing capacity (using $45 million to $55 million of its IPO cash hoard), and it should have plenty of greenbacks left over to lower manufacturing costs and fund product research. The market sees all this and still sends Cypress down? Investors must have been blinded by staring at the sun.

Turning back to SunPower and its out-of-sight reception, investors should be cautious. This year has brought plenty of examples of IPOs that opened hot and fizzled in a matter of weeks. Investment bankers are paid a lot of cash to price IPOs at reasonable levels, which makes it unlikely that they missed SunPower's true valuation by such a wide margin. In fact, with competition in solar from giants like General Electric (NYSE: GE - News), BP (NYSE: BP - News), and Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RD - News), along with Lilliputians such as Evergreen Solar (Nasdaq: ESLR - News), it should only be a matter of time before this moon shot returns to the more terrestrial levels of its IPO pricing.

In my opinion, Cypress Semiconductor is the big winner here. Even at the IPO price, its stake in SunPower is now valued at a dazzling $936 million.

Evergreen Solar and Q-Cells Announce Partnership with REC
Monday November 28, 7:30 am ET
Leading Solar Silicon Supplier Joins EverQ Venture

MARLBORO, Massachusetts, & THALHEIM, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 28, 2005--Evergreen Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: ESLR - News), a manufacturer of solar power products with its proprietary, low-cost String Ribbon(TM) wafer technology, and Q-Cells AG, the world's largest independent manufacturer of crystalline silicon solar cells, today announced a partnership with Renewable Energy Corporation ASA (REC), based in Hovik, Norway. The world's largest manufacturer of solar-grade silicon and multicrystalline wafers, REC is joining EverQ, a strategic partnership between Evergreen Solar and Q-Cells that is currently building a 30-megawatt solar wafer, cell and module manufacturing plant in Thalheim, Germany.

In conjunction with becoming a stakeholder in EverQ, REC has agreed to the long-term supply of solar-grade silicon to Evergreen Solar and EverQ. Under terms of the seven-year agreement, REC will initially supply Evergreen Solar with 60 metric tons and EverQ with 190 metric tons of solar-grade silicon annually. Additionally, REC will license to EverQ certain of its proprietary manufacturing technology. In exchange, REC will acquire a 15% ownership position in EverQ on a cost-of-capital basis. Following REC's initial investment, Evergreen Solar will own 64% of EverQ, Q-Cells 21% and REC 15%. The agreements contemplate that when REC establishes planned additional facilities for the production of silicon, it will offer to EverQ a second long-term supply agreement that would substantially increase REC's supply of silicon to EverQ. Should REC offer this second supply agreement, REC will be entitled to increase its ownership stake in EverQ to as much as one-third. The amended master agreement contemplates that Q-Cells will also be able to increase its ownership stake to one-third of EverQ.

"The addition of REC to the EverQ partnership is a landmark event for our joint venture and the entire solar industry," said Richard M. Feldt, President and Chief Executive Officer of Evergreen Solar. "At a time of potential silicon shortages and extremely high prices, EverQ now has an increased supply of silicon to facilitate rapid growth. Uniting REC's newly developed granular silicon with distinctive technologies from our three companies has the potential to dramatically reduce the overall cost of producing solar products and set a new worldwide standard for solar power."

Erik Thorsen, President and CEO of REC, stated, "Over the past three years, REC has made significant investments to develop a new process for making granular silicon for the PV industry. This product is an exceptionally good fit for the String Ribbon wafer manufacturing process. Because of global supply constraints, we expect the value of solar-grade silicon to remain at high levels for the next several years. We view EverQ, with Evergreen's wafer technology and Q-Cells' cell manufacturing capabilities, as an opportunity for REC to strategically leverage its future silicon expansion plans."

Anton Milner, CEO and a founder of Q-Cells, said, "REC's decision to join EverQ further validates the unique advantages that have been created by combining Evergreen Solar's String Ribbon technology with Q-Cells' high-performance solar cell manufacturing capabilities. Adding REC, a world-class silicon supplier, to the partnership will assist us in developing EverQ more rapidly and cost effectively into a world-leading supplier to the global solar marketplace. We believe EverQ's Thalheim facility will establish an ideal prototype that EverQ can replicate in emerging solar markets around the world."

The 30-megawatt Thalheim facility is currently under construction and is scheduled to commence full-scale operations by the summer of 2006. The German government is providing EverQ with grants totaling approximately $34 million to offset manufacturing facility construction costs, which are anticipated to be $75 million. The plant is expected to create between 350 and 400 new jobs in the Saxony-Anhalt region. Based on the initial success of the facility, EverQ will then evaluate the possibility of expanding the facility from 30 megawatts up to 120 megawatts of capacity.

Solar Power: Jim Cramer Anticipates Solar Play
Tuesday , January 10, 2006 08:51 ET
Jim Cramer suggested solar power investments if the California Public Utilities Commission decides to fund a nearly $2.85 billion solar power energy initiative. Among other things, the program will provide incentives to customer-side photovoltaics (PV) and solar thermal electric projects under 1 MW. The initiative calls for a $2.5B program for commercial and existing residential customers, and $350M for new residential building construction. While Cramer prefers ATS Automation (Canada), he also said SPWR, ESLR & STP could benefit. Other companies linked to the solar industry include DSTI, ENER, WFR & XSNX.

cumulina

Hi, la-onda  :)

Yes, I'm in!

Funny you should ask, because I just got back in today at 12.14 (Stock unfortunately had Cramer's attention.  >:()

I've been out too long for my own liking, and was also hoping to get in on STP, but that ran away from me before I could get some funds scraped together.

Just wait untill ESLR announces the start-up of their German facility!  8) Then we'll really be in the green.

If I had more money, I'd be looking hard at DSTI and DESC also.

What is ENER up to? A "Cup-with-handle" pattern? Or is it too early to tell?

May all your stock stay green!  ;)
Happy trading...

:)
