Ascending Triangle (continuation) Pattern

The ascending triangle is a bullish formation that usually forms during an uptrend as a continuation pattern. There are instances when ascending triangles form as reversal patterns at the end of a downtrend, but they are typically continuation patterns. Regardless of where they form, ascending triangles are bullish patterns that indicate accumulation.

Because of its shape, the pattern can also be referred to as a right-angle triangle. Two or more equal highs form a horizontal line at the top. Two or more rising troughs form an ascending trend line that converges on the horizontal line as it rises. If both lines were extended right, the ascending trend line could act as the hypotenuse of a right triangle. If a perpendicular line were drawn extending down from the left end of the horizontal line, a right triangle would form.

In contrast to the symmetrical triangle, an ascending triangle has a definitive bullish bias before the actual breakout. If you will recall, the symmetrical triangle is a neutral formation that relies on the impending breakout to dictate the direction of the next move. On the ascending triangle, the horizontal line represents overhead supply that prevents the security from moving past a certain level. It is as if a large sell order has been placed at this level and it is taking a number of weeks or months to execute, thus preventing the price from rising further. Even though the price cannot rise past this level, the reaction lows continue to rise. It is these higher lows that indicate increased buying pressure and give the ascending triangle its bullish bias.

LJ International's ENZO Retail Unit Exceeds 2006 Goal for Store Count and Meets Fourth Quarter Goal for Positive EBITDA
Monday January 8, 8:00 am ET

HONG KONG and LOS ANGELES, Jan. 8 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- LJ International Inc. (LJI) (Nasdaq: JADE - News), one of the fastest-growing jewelry companies in the world, today announced that its retail division, ENZO, has exceeded its previously-announced 2006 target for store-count growth and has met its goal for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA).

As of December 31, 2006, ENZO had a total of 42 retail outlets operating in China, Hong Kong and Macau. This exceeds the target of 40 stores that LJI announced most recently in August 2006. LJI continues on track to meet or exceed its goal of opening at least 100 stores by the time of the Beijing Olympics in the summer of 2008.

In terms of financial performance, ENZO has now passed a key milestone, positive EBITDA. Based on preliminary results for the fourth quarter ending December 31, 2006, it is expected to record positive EBITDA and operating profit, following negative EBITDA and operating profit in the prior quarter. This meets the target announced in June 2006 for breakeven EBITDA by the end of 2006.

LJI Chairman and CEO Yu Chuan Yih commented: "This has been a highly successful year for our ENZO retail division, which made the key transition to positive EBITDA and is well on its way to meeting our goal of full profitability on a net, stand-alone basis by the end of 2007. We are pleased, too, that ENZO is not only opening new stores at a rapid pace but is seeing large increases in revenues that point to healthy growth on a same-store basis. The division is on track to meet its 100-store target by the time of the Beijing Olympics and its 2008 revenue goal of $40 million. In the nearer term, the outlook for 2007 is looking better than ever. We expect soon to be providing new guidance for that year, along with the fourth quarter of 2006."

This was released afterhours on Friday :
LJ International, Inc. (LJI) (Nasdaq/GM: JADE), one of the fastest-growing jewelry companies in the world and, through its ENZO brand, the largest foreign jewelry retailer in China, today raised its guidance for revenues, net income and earnings per share for its fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2006.

Revenues are now expected to total approximately $40 million for the fourth quarter and $123 million for the full year. Both figures would represent new records for the Company. Fourth quarter revenues are expected to be approximately 27% above the $31.6 million reported in the fourth quarter of 2005. Projected full year revenues are expected to be approximately 30% above the $94.6 million reported in all of 2005.
LJI expects net income for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2006, to be approximately $3.0 million, exceeding the upper limit of the Company's earlier guidance by 43%. The projected fourth quarter 2006 net income is more than double the $1.4 million reported in the fourth quarter of 2005. For the full year, net income is expected to reach approximately $6 million, or approximately 76% above the $3.4 million reported in 2005.
Earnings per fully diluted share (EPS) also are expected to come in well over earlier guidance and sharply above year-ago levels. EPS is now projected to be approximately $0.16 for the fourth quarter and $0.34 for all of 2006. This quarterly projection represents an increase of approximately 78% over the $0.09 reported in the fourth quarter of 2005. The full year projected EPS represents an approximate 33% increase above the $0.24 reported for all of 2005.

Note: The single analyst was expecting .08 4Q  Monday should be interesting.

Sometimes all you need is some grade school math to make a sound and reasonable guess. If the market behaves normally, we'll see $.34 (new EPS) x 35 (old P/E) = $12 in the short run.
