Oracle 1st-qtr profit rises 25 pct
Thursday September 20, 4:50 pm ET

BOSTON (Reuters) - Oracle Corp (NasdaqGS:ORCL - News), the world's third-largest software maker, reported a 25 percent rise in quarterly profit on Thursday, boosted by higher-than-expected sales of new software.

The company's revenue and earnings per share excluding items beat average Wall Street expectations, and its shares rose 1.7 percent to $21.39 in after-hours trading.

"We continue to take applications market share from SAP," Oracle President Charles Phillips said in a statement.

Oracle is the leader in database software, ahead of International Business Machines Corp (NYSE:IBM - News). It is No. 2 in business applications, behind Germany's SAP AG (XETRA:SAPG.DE - News)

Net income jumped to $840 million, or 16 cents per share, for the first quarter ended August 31, from $670 million, or 13 cents, a year earlier.

Revenue rose 26 percent to $4.53 billion, beating the average analyst target of $4.36 billion, according to Reuters Estimates.

Earnings, excluding items such as stock-based compensation expenses and acquisition-related charges, were 22 cents per share, a penny above the average Wall Street expectation, according to Reuters Estimates.

The results were buoyed by sales of products that were not in its lineup a year ago. Oracle added them after buying Hyperion Solutions Corp, Stellent Inc, MetaSolv Inc and several other software makers over the past year.

Revenue from new software licenses rose 35 percent from a year earlier to $1.1 billion. Three months ago, it had told investors it expected new software licenses to rise between 20 percent and 30 percent from the year-earlier period.

Shares of Oracle trade at about 16 times the average outlook for next year's earnings per share, and slightly above the future price-to-earnings ratio for Microsoft Corp (NasdaqGS:MSFT - News), which is 16.

IBM trades at 15 times earnings, and SAP trades at 22 times estimated 2008 earnings.

Oracle's Shares Soar 8.4% On Spending Hopes...

Shares of Oracle (ORCL) catapulted to a more than nine-year high on Friday, a day after the business software giant reported solid quarterly results that eased investor concerns about tech spending.

Oracle's results prompted at least nine brokerages to raise their price targets on the stock.

Shares of the Redwood City, Calif.-based No. 1 maker of databases jumped 8.4% to 27.48 on the Nasdaq. More than 145 million shares changed hands, where its average trading volume is roughly 30 million.

"Oracle remains an attractive large-cap software investment, given new product introductions, actions to drive higher profitability and growth in the Sun business," brokerage firm Jefferies & Co. said Friday in a note to clients.

For its fiscal first quarter ended Aug. 31, the company posted a 25% surge in software sales and a pickup in its new hardware business. Oracle completed its $7.4 billion acquisition of server maker Sun Microsystems in January, vaulting into the hardware market.

FBR Capital Markets said Oracle can deliver better-than-expected revenue and exceed its goal for Sun to deliver $1.5 billion of operating income in its first year.

"Software companies seem to execute best when they have the benefit of a technologist CEO and a sales and operations-focused president — Oracle now has that combination in place," wrote JMP Securities, referring to ex-Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) CEO Mark Hurd's recent move to Oracle. Hurd joined Oracle as co-president just this month. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison had publicly criticized HP's board for forcing Hurd's resignation over issues related to the lodging of a sexual harassment claim against Hurd.

JMP Securities, which raised its rating on the Oracle stock to market outperform, or buy, from market perform, or neutral, said Oracle would see a new growth driver in high-end engineered systems that combine hardware and software, two of which might be launched next week.

Oracle's shares have risen 20% since Hurd joined the company on Sept. 6.
