Title: Smack Talkin' Thread
Post by: Lucas Scott on November 10, 2005, 02:29:11 AM
I realized we need a dedicated thread for talking smack about our picks ;D  This is that thread! All in good fun of course!! >:D  Only one rule here: No smiting someone for busting on your stock!

Also feel free to use this thread to discuss the stocks picks in a mature manner as well. Post updated DD, charts, whatever.

QuoteIs there a special Board where stock picks of contestants are discussed, as many of the picks are new to 3SOF and it would be nice to get connected to streams on the stocks themselves.

This is the place!

QuoteBooyah!! (although I hate the Man Cramer! he did pump up BMD)

It's a mixed bag Defender. Stocks Cramer pumps often get dumped after a few days/weeks. Ideally for you Cramer would have waited two weeks to pump BMD so you could get a late surge. By the time this contest is nearing an end the Cramerits may be falling over themselves to escape BMD. Look at CPST!!

Here's the GTE chart, currently holding 5th place out of 56 in the 3SoF Challenge! Breakout of bullish flag today. My target is the 200 dma at $2.83. Hoping it gets there by the end of the contest.

With week 1 almost over, 19 traders are in the money and 36 are underwater on their positions. That ratio isn't pretty especially considering the market as a whole is up this week. We should at least be at 50/50.  33/67 is completely unacceptable! Will Randolph offer a remedial trading course to those who finish in the bottom 10? >:D

I have crush on AOB and had not there been the risk of negative earning surprise I would have seconded the pick. At the moment I am standing by CKCM and I think elite's ERI may move past many and I'll be licking my humble profits.

CKCM is a nice stock, especially over the last month, but I don't think she'll win this contest because she's 10% away from a double top scenario. I don't think we'll see a breakthrough of that on the first attempt.

Agreeance that elite's ERI looks dangerous.

Post by: Michael on November 13, 2005, 02:02:27 PM
Hmmmm........ I am too late for the contest but that doesn't stop me from taking advantage from all the good stocks that nicely have been served for all of us (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=3311;image)

I would have loved too go for VPHM, AOB,SVA, CRYP or CKCM (I can't see that double top  ::)) but I already have them.

I have spent my weekend going through all the picks to find the sexy once. So here U are:

The short list of the picks of the picks:

SYNC

Great stock. I missed it the first time around due to the insider selling but I like the fundamentals

UBET

Gorgeous fundamentals but I am a bit concerned about the litigation.

QLTI

Lovely balance sheet, good earnings but competition is around the corner.

I will try to buy at least one of these stocks on Monday.

AOB does look nice stocky and great job on CKCM.. nice performance so far  8)

I feel that it may be too high priced to move enough in this contest.  I'm thinking it will take 50%..prolly higher to win it all  >:D  but I may be way off especially if the stock market makes a turn south.  Thx for the nod on ERI  ;)  It will be very interesting to see where everybody is a month from now  :)  Goodluck stocky.

Let the best ma.. let the luckiest bastard win  :D >:D >:D  Goodluck man.

My favourite "unknown" for me at least from the contest is WGAT, which has shown an awesome break of a long term descending trendline.  Looks potenially set for the second leg of a G-pattern, but haven't quite seen the associated volume explosion... yet.  Good enough that I took a position on Thursday.  No thread with any recent content on 3SOF,  so will have to update.

All fun and games though.  Would be interested to see what others think  ;D ;D

Have to say that I almost went in with GTE as my pick Lucas, as it has been one I've been following for a few weeks, and I really like the chart, but CNXT just looks too good, and with a potential gap fill for an 80+% gain, I couldn't resist.  Right now I'm gutted I didn't go for my first instinct, and left it to you, as GTE seems to be doing pretty well in the standings, while CNXT is near the bottom in red territory for the week, but all may change....

Anyway, good luck to all, let the luckiest bastard win ;D ;D ;D

Scot, I bought CNXT on Friday for my portfolio. I like the way the chart is setting up. I think you'll get a nice run out of it before this contest is over. GO CNXT!!

$1000 Contest Update: 11/15/05

17 traders have a gain of > 1%
35 traders have a loss of 1% or more

Not good!! I reiterate that I hope David will offer a special remedial TA course to those who finish in the bottom 10! >:D

Suggestion to Randolph/Ramsburg for future contests. Rather than winner-take-all I think the prize could be spread out a little.

Example:
1st place: Free year's subscription + $250
2nd place: $150
3rd place: $100

If the game ended today I'd be the winner with a return on GTE of 26.5%. But I'd feel bad for tugsinav, Right Side, vic666 and stocky, whose picks are only a few percentage points behind. I'd feel real bad if it's me who finishes a percentage point behind! :D

Also there will be months where the winner is obvious after a week or two, like if someone's pick shoots up 50% in a day. In a situation like that where the best the rest of the group can hope for is 2nd place, it would be cool if there was a prize for 2nd.

I agree with Lucas ;D.  I was also wondering if you might change up the membership part of the prize at some point (ie make it optional to exchange for cash) or increase the prize  ;D.

Maybe a system like this would work:
1st - [$250] and [1-yr membership]
                  or [6-month membership + extra $225]
                  or [1-month membership + extra $450]
                  or [extra $500]

2nd - [$150]
        or [1-month membership + $100]

3rd - [$100]
        or [1-month membership + $50]

That way 1st - 3rd have the possibility of getting money and/or a membership and if they are already one year (or other time-length) members than they can get money to invest immediately.  What does everyone else think... it's basically the same thing Lucas said... with a twist  :D.

I'd like to say UBET sucks. Plain and simple. After hearing that conference call I see no reason to buy here. In fact its a short from my perspective. Broke the long term ascending support line....would not be suprised if this pick goes down 20% and i "win" for the highest LOSS.  :o

BTW =  I also personally got stopped out for -6% as my stop was just below the 200 day ma...

Bought GTE today, would sell if it closes below 2.2. Resistance at 2.4.

I owned this stock in pre-reverse penny days. At that time it was not ready but now I think its technically and speculatively ready for sharp gains and it could even double by the end of the contest.

Goodluck and tumbs up for recommending. Hope CKCM atleast keep its gains. Though I am expecting it to double in 12 month time.

Nice chart. Not sure it was the best bet for this contest since it looked like it was in need of some consolidation (i.e. handle for the cup, as you pointed out when you submitted) before attacking new highs. For a timeframe longer than 4 weeks the setup looks super.

Possible twist for future contests. Anyone submitting a pick that loses more than 15% in the month has to pay 20 bucks into the winner's pot >:D  Just half-kidding bout that (but half serious too, I mean actraders' SMTX is down 40%. For shame!).

I do think prize money should be divvy'd among the top 5. Like $200 to 1st, $100 to 2nd, and a free month subscription ($50 value) to 3rd, 4th and 5th.  Instead of $500 to the winner. Man I would be mad if the contest ended today and I lost because SVA's return was 1.1% higher better than mine! :'(

Dunno where I should post, but in the interest of full disclosure, I sold my position in KOMG today for a nice gain.  I know tomorrow is the official end of the contest, but (1) GTE is the clear winner -- congrats! :) and (2) KOMG is looking overextended after a big run-up this last month, institutions are beginning to offload, the trading action today is a little weak, and volume is slowing down.  My goal is to be ahead of the trend, so if I miss out on a few dollars, it's okay.  Of course, I do tend to sell early.. but then again, hindsight is always 20/20, and about half the time I've looked back and said, "darn, sold too early," and about half of the time I've said, "phew, glad I sold early."  Of course I remember the biggest losses and largest missed gains the most, like most other people on the planet...

I know that I've checked out the $1000 results once or twice to search for interesting picks, and I wanted to let others who might be doing the same that I'm taking profits today.  :)

It feels like a football game with two minutes left in the 4th quarter, and I'm up 21-10 and have possession. I just have to protect the ball. If I fumble and the other team recovers and scores a TD, then gets an onside kick and scores again I could lose. ;D But the odds of that happening are slim. Just one more day!!

Had an idea for the payout for the next Stock Picking Contest. Assuming the total payout amount stays the same, could do $250 plus the year subscription to the winner, and then $250 to be divided evenly among anyone else whose stock has appreciated 20% or more. Just a way to recognize and give a pat on the back to those who made a great pick but missed out on first place.

Man I KNEW I should have picked GTE ::)

But seriously, it was my first pick, but then decided to go with CNXT instead - the big gap just looked too tempting...  is on its way, but may be good for then next stock picking contest.

Anyway, congrats Lucas, the only consolation I have is that I have held GTE through the entire contest, so while I may not have picked it, its still the biggest winner on my books.  We'll see about next time though - don't get too picky on your supreme picking skills ;)

Yeah, I was just joking about that. ;D  A smite would be pretty harsh. It would be a double whammy too if the person also lost real money on the pick!

LOL good ol setravis....... I was actually born and raised in Eugene, oregon.... Home of the Oregon ducks who which im a big fan of, the beavers invited me to go knaw on some wood, but instead i told em to build and damn to block anyone from beating me, as well i gave them specific orders to put this old timer named setravis at the end of the line ;) Meanwhile ive hitched a ride with the ducks to fly to the winners circle  >:D muahahahahahahhahahahah LOL

What is up folks?  I am in 8th place with a measly 2.9% gain?  Has the environment shifted away from higher-risk stocks or something, or did y'all just pick the riskiest plays possible in the hopes of winning big?!  heh... well, good luck.

I will quickly plug my one-page web site as well (http://www.scatterbrainbackup.com/stocks/).  I have a nice link to the 3SOF web site on there... I'm looking for a 3SOF logo now.  Hopefully I will send some people this way and vice versa :)  Take care all, and I hope the bleeding in the $1000 contest portfolio stops soon!

Hey, let's talk some smack!  Fousc wins one little contest and he gets a big head and changes his handle to Fous?  What, he's too good to have a "C" at the end of his name now??  Is that like when Joe Theismann was at Notre Dame and changed the pronunciation of his last name from "Thees-Man" to "Thighs-Man," because it would rhyme with "Heisman"? :D

Ya!  What's up with the name change FOUSC???  At least  "FOUSC" made some sense.............I always thought you were dyslexic or something and mispelled FOCUS.  Now that you changed your name, I can't associate it with anything  :-\

Hey.... just between me and you guys, I got this month's contest sealed.  Don't tell anyone but ASTM is headed towards $3.  Good luck!  cause you're gonna need it.
Title: Re: Smack Talkin' Thread

Mispelled Focus :D.  I initially thought Fousc might be a variation of Faust

Faust (foust)  also Faus·tus (fou'stəs, fô'-)
n.
A magician and alchemist in German legend who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for power and knowledge.

Maybe Fous sold his "C" to the devil in exchange for his win.

Thai - I wouldn't mind seeing you win with ASTM at $3 because I'm holding ASTM and I'm quite a bit underwater on it. Some of my shares I bought above $3. Most recently I added at $2.12.

Thai, did you mean headed toward $3 with a pit stop at $1.50? ??? The numbers from the earnings release were not well received. At what price point would you do a "mon back" and add to your position?

The submissions for this edition of the contest were, in a word, dreadful. We've got twice as many 5%+ losers as we do 5%+ winners. I should've gone with a stock with a bullish setup (CUP) rather than trying to pick a bottom (WGAT). I wish the contest had started either one week earlier or one week later. If it had started a week earlier, I almost certainly would've chosen CUP. If it had started a week later, there's a good chance I would've picked PEIX. With either one I'd be in the running for the prize :-\

Looking forward to cache00's interview, assuming he holds on to his lead.

When does the 4th edition start??!

Ha Ha!!! I'm catching up from behind >:D >:D >:D

Don't forget that there are still a couple more weeks of this contest left (its a long one) and there is everything to play for  - me, I'm aiming for AVNX to run to the 1.40s next week.

And if you are winning, don't forget to book your profits, it could all go down the tubes >:D >:D >:D

but you're right Thai, a shocking number of picks in the red this month.  As a community we don't appear to be very good at this stock picking business ??? ???  But this is the problem with the markets - who in the world really knows?

You don't want to take my advice Lucas!! haha.  ASTM has been tanking drastically as of late.  I'm not sure why people are selling.......there's nothing out of the ordinary that is surprising to me in the latest earnings release.  Everyone should have known that there was no way that ASTM was going to beat earnings estimate.  That was a given.  I wasn't that surprised either that they didn't meet their earnings expectations because
1)  ASTM didn't receive as many grants as they did in previous quarters
2)  They started more clinical trails which lead to a higher monthly burn rate
3)  hiring of new board members to board of directors

From a technical standpoint, Melf was correct when he stated that a head and shoulders pattern was forming.  I didn't want to say it in my posts cause I didn't want to see it play out.  :-\  Unfortunately it did and the double bottom pattern now becomes invalid.  Although, atleast we hit the head and shoulders target point..............so hopefully it can make a comeback soon.

All the analysts target projection still have remained in tact (average is above 4.00 except the latest target from merriman ford).  None has lowered their target that I know of so that is good news.  The past analysts target have always hit so unless they really report some devasting clinical news, I don't see any reason for this stock to not reach its target.

Good luck everyone!

hey Jimbo - it ends Monday at the open. Looks like cache00 has it locked up unless COGO has a big gap down.

What a stinker I picked - WGAT >:( I'm embarassed and ashamed. I said it was either a triple bottom (bullish) or a descending triangle (bearish). Turned out to be the latter. Hopefully no one else touched it. I sold my own position at the open on Thursday for a severe loss.

Congrats cache00. Looking forward to reading your interview!

Well all I can say is whew :o, glad friday turned out as it did for AVNX - while I have no way of catching the leaders, hopefully I'll get a 3rd place out of it.  But bronze is still tight, andything could happen PM... will just have to wait and see....

Great picks on the big gainers, glad I could be one of them for a change, after coming last last month (bad picks happen to all of us Lucas) ;)
Title: Re: Smack Talkin' Thread

Man,  I think I got knocked out of 3rd place there right at the end - it was real tight, but I think VRSO gapped up to open at 1.86, beating AVNX into 4th - but it looks like HEB may have gapped up even higher, meaning all I get is a (lousy) tee-shirt.  (Note to David and Fred, the tee-shirts aren't really lousy, I just already have one ;D)

Oh well, congrats all anyway - all in the name of fun and stock picking ;D ;D ;D

Quotemy goal is to simply do better than you

Last month almost all the entries better than mine. Aim higher G! My goal is a top 3 finish.

In the last edition I spent a long time debating what stock to pick. My first instinct was CUP and I should have stayed with that. I think I would have sold CUP at 3.90 on the gap up day (I sold the gap up in my actual trading account), which would have ended up getting me 2nd place. So this time I went with my first instinct and that was PPHM.

Looking ahead, after 10 editions of the contest there should be an All-Star Edition, in which only the winners of the first 10 contests compete for a $10,000 winner-take-all cash prize! LOL think we can convince David Randolph to splurge for that kind of prize? I'm sure the advertising revenue for such an event would more than cover it ;) ;D

Lots of good picks this time around.  I like the idea of the All-Star 10th contest.  But I think maybe the top 5 of each of the prior contests would be more interesting.  45 or so all stars.   BB's excluded of course.  Let's do it.  Prize- lifetime subscription + 5000.  2500 2nd, 1250 3rd, 750 4th, 500 5th. >:D >:D

So much for my pick.  I thought it was glued to $4.50 and in just 2 days already lost over 5%.

I must be the kiss-of-death on this one.

rather than including the top 5 winners from each edition, I'd go for the star edition inviting those that have performed consistently the best on a gross average of all 10 contests (with a minimum no. of participating contest being 7-8).

In other words, the contestants are gonna be those 20-25 members that have had a consistent track of picking winners and trading them (buy and sell at the right time) that had led them to get consitent good returns.

of course, we should have to exclude the 1st edition (because of the different rules back then). apologies to the winners of that contest.  ;D

any thoughts??  :)

Vic - I totally disagree!! Since I won the first edition that might be affecting my perspective ;)

Almost 80% of the 4th edition picks are in the red! This is reflective of the market as a whole this week. The fella who picked MBAY should have sold at the open today. That would have been a 15.6% gain one-day gain. At the rate we're going this month, that might have been good enough to win.

lucas...just trying to have the all-star version fair, nothing against the winner of the first contest, i.e. yourself  :D

haing said that, your lines "Almost 80% of the 4th edition picks are in the red! This is reflective of the market as a whole this week." is precisely the reason why I suggested we go for consistent stock pickers rather than the top 3 from each edition. IMO, good stock pickers should be able to pick stocks no matter what kinda market it is, bullish or bearish.

having siad that, another thing I'd like to suggest to Randolph and Ramsburg is to include the ability to "short stocks" as part of the stock picking contest. not as a separate contest, but members should have the liberty to choose to go long or short and either sell their long positions or buy back their short positons at any time...in that way, traders will also get to show their potential in a bear market through their short picks.

ur thoughts are welcome on this.  ;)

BTW, congratulations on your win in the first contest.  :)

Just watched the Phenominal Interview by Dr. Friesen of Medicure on ROB tv.  Here's the link, just scroll down to the 2:50pm timeslot on Wednesday.  You'll be glad you did.

http://www.robtv.com/shows/past_archive.tv?day=wed

Bert was so excited he could barely contain himself! Considering he's normally stiff and dry it was very refreshing and you could just see that he wanted to spill the beens but had to bite his lip! I think we're going to see a very Explosive year! When Dr. Friesen alluded to market cap at the end and suggested a comparable company upon forming a Partnership going into Phase 3 could hit a market cap of $750mill., $1 bill, or even as high as $2bill. he looked like a kid in a candy store for the first time. Out Standing!! The lowest point would give us a potential Five bagger by the end of summer....... Keep in mind Dr F's Very Conservative Nature and you can expect a fantastic year ahead. Time for that second Mortgage! LMAO CHEERS Dead

Hey Aussie...

I gave up on the idea of holding thru' earnings ever since a dismal (and literally a "trading career" altering) loss I took on INCX right about 1 yr. back. That was a huge slap in the face and a lesson to me (and to many many others as well).

Sorry about what happened with DIET...I guess you knew they were releasing earnings...but sadly, there was a lot of expectations from investors about DIET repeating a la NTRI. it did not happen and the investors bailed in droves...not just the traders, but I believe many who were in for the long haul bailed out too...it reminded me so much of the hit that INCX took last year.

you are being a good sport about the loss, so here's an applaud to you.

by the way, r u still holding ur position, or did ur stop loss help you?

cheers Aussie,
Vish'

Hey Vic,

Thanks for the comments. Don't worry about me I did have a position in DIET but was stopped out for an acceptable and controllable loss. I normally don't hold through earnings either, but sometimes I do when there is an upside potential to ride and I accept the risk reward gets a bit hairy (as I only do  it occassionally it does not materially affect my port if I am wrong).

However, I am more concerned about my apalling track record in the stock picking comp hence my self flagellation :D

An applaud for you though for your concern.

Cheers

Just curious, I see that nobody selected MCU for the stock Contest and though I tried and was refused I realize Calven had mentioned it here before I had but didn't even see him in the contest?  I think I'd be around sixth place had MCU been allowed.

MCU was a good one. It's an under-the-radar stock because the volume isn't crazy. Those are often the best stocks. Sux that you got disqualified because of the post rule. Oh well, you're ready for next month.

ELR,

I hope LC doesn't mind me answering your question. I think you won't find an official post about the new management of 3SoF on the public boards, although there should have been  ;) .

Anyways here is a copy of the e-mail sent this morning from Ramsburg :

I am happy to announce the addition of eliteG and Michael to the trading team!  It was our intention, for quite some time, to add more value to 3stocksonfire by including the best of the best of the technical and fundamental stock analysis worlds and this seems like the right time to do it.

Also at this time David Randolph, has for personal reasons, decided to take a step back from duties at 3stocksonfire. David will therefore take a secondary roll behind the scene.  We are however committed to ensure that 3SOF will continue to be the best place on the Internet to share ideas for traders and investors.

eliteG, Michael and I(Ramsburg) will take over the responsibility of the 3SOF's portfolio's.

Both Michael and eliteG are well known to most members of 3SOF but please allow me to introduce them.

eliteG is a gifted technical analyst.  He has had some amazing picks on 3SOF and has also shown that he cares about the traders here by giving them top-notch technical advice during market hours.  eliteG is knowledgeable about almost everything in the TA world but has also come up with many of his own theories, the most famous being the G-Pattern.  eliteG brings almost 7-years of trading experience to the table.

Michael is a world-class fundamental trader. We have probably all followed some of his picks like KOMG, GIGM and CKCM. Michael Bang Koenig has more than 20 years of stock market investment experience.  His long-term view on investments is probably reminiscent of the time when you had to wait for the morning newspaper before you knew if you had made a good investment decision.

To accommodate the change of personalities we will be making some changes to the portfolios. We are however committed to the investment decisions David has made and we will only make changes if there are compelling fundamental or technical reasons.

I hope all of you will welcome the changes to 3SOF and will continue to contribute to making this forum one of the best places on the Internet for serious investors.

regards,
Frederick Ramsburg

Hey Ramsburg,

How about honoring our past winners with a gold star next to their name or something.  Something so that we know who our past winners are cause I think they need to feel honored to have won against so many great contributers to the board.  Anyways, that's just my 2 cents.

Unofficially sold my pick this morning. Meaning I didn't sell it for the contest but I sold it in my own portfolio and I don't think I'm going to win with it, barring some fantastic news soon. If I'd sold at the open for the contest it would have been a gain of 6.6%. That's not going to put me in the money so I'll let it ride and hope for a miracle.

Regarding PPHM - I see Lucas where you had drawn the Pennant using the dotted lines and the lower trend line had one candle touch and 2 long shadow touches from the other two candles...  FWIW I always generally try to not include shadow touches in my potential chart patterns because they can skew any daily results.  A stock may trade 400k shares in a day at $3 but somehow one trader gets a piddly low bid through for 300 shares at $2.40...So Do you include the shadow for a miniscule 300 shares at $2.40 when drawing your trend lines or exclude the shadow deeming it to be insignificant?  I almost always without question ignore it.
The times they do get included on my trendlines using the main bodies of the candles is usually just coincidence.  FWIW - Dead.......

Thanks boat! what a great run!  8)
Today could be the exhaustion because of the parabolic move and record volume. I placed a stop market order at $3.95 as it bounced off $4 3 times today. gotta protect the profit and lead!
But who knows, this could run again tomorrow, who knew it could run this much, haha. I will sell if it spikis near $5 ( resistence back in 2001) for contest purpose.

so, for now , stop @ $3.95 or it hits $5

GLTA!

Eager was the first to pick GNBT so he's got the tiebreaker advantage over Masternic. Or does Masternic get DQ'd for picking the same stock? The rules are not clear. If Masternic is still eligible he could still win if he sells earlier or later than Eager and ends up with a better exit price. This will be interesting!

Dead - I hear ya on the shadows. If a shadow looks invalid I exclude it but it can be hard to tell. Usually I will include them though. I think more often than not they are valid and are an integral part of a stock's story on a given day.

it just hit $5 , i would have sold it if we can place order intraday.
To protect the profit and lead i probably should sell it at open tomorrow no matter what , but i am thinking maybe i can let it run just for fun, as i have quite a cusion to play with.

It appears Generex (GNBT) might not win this contest. After Hours last price was $3.38 on volume of 700k according to Nasdaq.com  http://tinyurl.com/egvw7.  Yahoo Finance shows $2.96.

This SmartMoney article was released just before the close and could have something to do with the AH plunge:
http://yahoo.smartmoney.com/undertheradar/index.cfm?story=20060324&afl=yahoo

Some harsh indictments from the article:

"There are some stocks that go up because the smart money realizes that the dumb money will buy when certain news events happen," says Peter Cohan, president of Peter S. Cohan & Associates, a management-consulting and venture-capital firm in Marlborough, Mass., "and this looks like one of those times." .....

At the other end of the spectrum is Generex. It has no approved products on the market. For the six months ended Jan. 31, the Canadian company brought in revenue of $87,500. Its loss for the period nearly doubled year-over-year to $23.4 million. And for the past year, Generex hasn't been able to pay off its debt......

"An investor should say, even though Generex is losing money now in a few years it will make so much money it's worth [seven times] more now than a year ago," says Cohan, the venture capitalist. "I can't see any basis for that forecast. The reason it's going up is because there is a class of investor that will buy it whenever bird flu is mentioned in the news."

If GNBT does not win, it will be the biggest choke in the history of the 3SoF Stock Picking contest. Reminds me of Gonzaga's choke against UCLA a few nights ago. The only valid reason for not locking up the profit is because there are two people who picked GNBT and selling first gives the other guy an advantage, unless you were lucky/good enough to sell at the highest open between now and the finish.

What this rule does for?, Eagerlearner is a subscriber so it does not matter if he sells it first or last, so the other person who picked GNBT is already out of the contest.. right? or did they change the rule again?

Rule #07 – In case the winner pick was picked by 2 or more players, the final winner will be the player who did post his pick in first place, with one exception in case one of the winners is an Honours Member (Subscriber), then he will be the final Contest Winner despite the date stamp of his pick.

This rule, I assume is for a tie. If one sells before the other than there will be different returns in the end and the nonsubscriber could win if his returns are higher than the subsrciber.

Hi Terlisa  :), u are right , i am a subscriber and picked GNBT first, so i would get the prize if GNBT ends up in top 5. Ramsburg confirmed this in a previous msg. Thanks!  ;)
Hi Luke  :D, ya i could have executed this sell order better to lock in maybe 78% gain. but for the record, i did post this sell order the day before it plunged:

Quote1) Stop Market order GNBT at $3.95

2) Reason: what a great run, but i do fear today could be the exhaustion because of the extradinary parabolic move (the end of a 3 weeks parabolic run) and record high volume.
Intra-day it dipped to $4 3 times and bounce right back. I will protect this 70%+ profit by placing a stop market order at $3.95 , just below the short term support.

In terms of target, i dont have a firm read , will sell intraday if it spikes up big again tomorrow. $5 comes to mind, as it was a resistence back in 2001 (by looking at the chart).  I will change this to a market sell if it rises near $5 tomorrow.

glta

only to later found out we could not place a limit order or a stop order. Note that both of my orders could have been triggered as GNBT did hit top of $5.04 and later drooped near 3.3 .  Its a great blessing we have such a well run contest here , but it could be better if the sell order is more flexible. Because the only reason one can place a sell order before the open is 1) he thinks the stock is gonna drop the same day. 2)the gain is good enuf to win .   That's hard, i couldnt justify myself to make such a call then with 2 weeks left with about 78%. And i wanted to stay in to have more excitement  ::) .
No hard feeling here if i dont win tho, i am quite new at trading , and i am having fun in the contest and learning.   ;D
Couldnt feel more grateful how much 3SOF and everyone here have helped me!

Best of luck to everyone!

Thanks for the encouragement Set !  :) Hawkeye ! (as G always calls u).
u, alone with G , david and ram, were one of the knowledgeable guys here taught me most and made me some mula when i first came to the site in june 2005! Thx man!

As for GNBT, i seriiously doubt it can make new high any time soon unless there is some breakthrough development. It scared lots of investors/speculators and created lots of overhead resistence on that crazy day it dropped from $5 to $3.3 IMHO.  I will probably place a sell order as soon as it spikes near 4.  Hope that will happen  ::).

Have a greak weekend!

This rule was made before we permit the Sell option in the contest, and that rule will remain in case there is a tie between 2 players. Of course, if one of them sells GNBT before the end of the contest, that rule doesn't make sense, because they both will probably have different final performances, (anyway, in case of a tie, eagerlearner will be the winner).

Hi Ramsburg, does that mean i have to make a better sell order than Masterik to beat him? Can i suggest that next time whoever posts the pick first locks that pick? Because one can just go through all the picks and choose one to post it himself.  That gets really messy and defeat the purpose of picking a stock  :P. ( I am not saying Masterik did that this time, i think it was a coincidence )
What do u guys think?

Hi Eagle !

More or less, if you both don't sell GNBT, you will win. But in case both of you sell it, the winner will be the best performer despite of who picked it first or who is part of the Honours Members group.

One of the reasons why we have implemented the Selling option was this one (solving ties), and also the trading feature... A trade is not only the stock picking part, as we all know, a lot of good picks turn into bad picks if we don't sell them on the right timing. By allowing users to sell their pick during the contest, we are not just running a «stock race», and we are already testing some trading skills (of course with some limitations), giving the players the «freedom» of selling their stock when they think is the best time.

My best regards !

Wrangler - noooooooooooooo!!!!! You'd be in 1st place now :'( I was pulling for you to win because I bought LVLT at 4.01 when I caught the breakout while checking the charts of the 4th Edition picks. Still holding. Will look at taking some off the table tomorrow.

Oh well there's a good chance GNBT and NXXI will give back some of their gains and you can retake the lead. There are a few good stocks behind you to worry about though. This edition of the contest has been a wild one.

GNBT, up 110% intraday a few weeks back, is now up a meager 17% and Eager and Masterik are in 16th and 17th place. It's March Madness, 3Stocks-style!

I was surprised Leaira did not sell NXXI at the open today. NXXI looks good, but it could easily pull a Generex.

Why does the contest page look like it's still running?  Shouldn't it show all the stocks as being sold today?

If the same person wins the contest twice, do they get more time as a subscribed member?  Or is there a special prize for someone that wins again while they still have time left on their membership?

While I'm in a smack talkin' mood, the worst pick in this edition of the contest had to be MSFT. It's not going to come in last or anywhere near last, but what made it the worst pick is it has almost ZERO chance of finishing in the top 5. To have a shot at winning you have to buy volatility! And MSFT has been about as non-volatile as a stock can get for years.

better than 3SOF penny picks. 97 wins 120 loses?
PGPM owned today, where were u guys on that one lol.
i'm actually thinking about signing up for the penny picks, i donno if i should should buy 2 pennies and hope to break even, or buy 1 and make a lot or lose a lot, or start a penny mutual fund with like 10.

Yeah GV is a beast! It just completed the 3 White Soldiers so it's due for a retrace. Now it's TGC's turn to run. Some wishful thinking in that statement.

Livana's IIP is rocking in after hours after reporting earnings. Good chance she grabs 1st place going into the weekend.

TGC releasing earnings surprised me. I don't think their release date was publicly announced. Just came out of the blue. I figured that since they released their Q4 on March 20, they wouldn't do Q1 until June. Part of my reasoning when I picked TGC was that there wasn't earnings news risk. I got blindsided! >:(

Yeah LOL. I think this contest is insightful. Just to read a lot of posts on the boards someone would think, "wow these people sound so knowledgeable, they must be millionairres." There's always someone posting that they bought some stock at the low of day and sold it at the high. But then when you look at the contest and see 3 out of 4 picks are losers... ;) Granted the last 3 days have been a stock killer, but even in the bullish months it seems like over half the picks typically finish red. Stock trading is tough!

That would be funny if someone's pick had been Mattress* as in "put my money under a mattress for a month" and they finished in the Top 5 with a 0.00% return  :D ;D

I hope people traded their contest picks and came out OK rather than holding all the way down. I bought TGC at the start of the contest at 1.34 and sold at 1.70 when it was closing with a bearish engulfing. I think Fous got out in the 1.70's too. Healey, did you sell?

I wish I had it all in a mattress this past week OUCH :o. I watched TGC when it bounced off a buck and got in again at 1.19.. bought more when it broke 1.5 and sold it all when it came back at 1.52. Like you I had lows 2's as a sell point. After the blood letting is over it is looking like a play again.
It seems like a long time a go but remember this....

2nd and 3rd seem to be up for grabs easily. I think I can win first with GNBT if I could find some way to mutate the H5N1 and pass it around and make it only vulnerable to GNBT's vaccine.

I picked KONG because its symbol sounds cool and barchart.com gave it sell 100% technicals in short term, midterm and longterm and its still beating the actual thought out picks in this contest hehe.

I am not in the contest so really cant legitimately talk smack here (I was going to enter with CPST but that would be in the red now too if I had), but I seem to recall the last stock contest was tough for anyone to get any green because the market started tanking then too.

Maybe the contest can be a contrarian indicator, lol, when it starts, its time to sell your real life stocks!!!   :-\    I only had one green stock today, and that was from buying XKEM for its bounce... anyway, hope the rest of you are doing better in real life!

Nice sell Boatguy, looks enough to clinch the title.

I was a mouse click away from selling my GIGM on the morning of their earnings announcement, but decided against it as I thought 21% gain wasn't enough to beat you or some of the others.

It's been a brutal market for the last 3 months.  Which is why I propose, for the next contest, that we can trade using any strategy we wish.  Not just buying stock, but also allow us to short stocks or buy options (puts or calls) on stocks that are optionable.  The only new rule to add about options is that the expiration date must be after the end of the contest.

I haven't entered another pick BECAUSE I won.  What could I do with another prize package?

Well you could extend your premium membership and get another stack of cash. Thats what i would do with another prize package :)

LOL, that sort of suggests you believe if you had entered another pick you would automatically win ;) Statistically that is unlikley. Go on enter in the next round.

Aussie,

I thought you had it nailed with GIGM for the contest, I watched it go up Pre market to over 11$. I don't think anyone saw this drop coming.

This bear market was tough on the market and the contest. I am surprised 20% was enough to win. Pleny of good picks, just a tough market.

Let's hope the we get nice rally for the next contest.

Maybe we should be having a shorting contest! :-\

congrats to you boatguy, 20% in a month is a good trade.
and congrats to the top 8 who managed to finish in the green.
i was sure gigm was going to go but that's the market. volatile.
i was glad to finish 7th considering i picked lum by going to barchart.com  and basically throwing a dart the night before the comp started. (which should really disqualify me for a blind pick)
here is the change i would like to see. i don't know if this is possible but just buying at the open and selling at the open is too fixed . maybe you could buy on any day in the month having previously decided which stock to play. also at any time of day. given that you can record the time the email is sent saying you have bought xyz stock at the ask price at this time.
your email will record the time you buy so there won't be any cheating with hindsight and it is easy to check what the bid and ask is at any time of the day.
same with the selling.
shorting should be included and it doesn't have to be a separate contest. one player is on one side of the market while another is on the other side.
thanks, and congrats again to the top three.,
see you next contest,
maxi

Congratulations boatguy and masternic for breaking 10% profit and everyone else who finished in the green. That was a pretty close battle between the top 5 until the end.

Maybe a limit order posted before market action...
Shorting, I'm not sure it will be simple to code...

let me think about it ;)

What about buying options (puts and calls) on stocks?

We sure did miss a great time to have a contest,
with the bull market that we have been in.
I can imagine with some of the picks these stock heads here @ 3SOF would have come up with, at some of the gains they would have posted..... :(  :'( ::)
For shame, we have missed all this....I'm sad  :(
